That's either a really small city or a really big horse. :-/

Let us all pause for a moment and remember the word "Gritty," which on January 13, 2011 at 03:02 PM ET officially Jumped The Shark, courtesy of ew.com's James Hibberd. It was a good word, although suffering from much overuse and exhaustion in recent times.

R.I.P. Gritty

gritty, adj.(comparative grittier, superlative grittiest)

1. Containing sand or grit; consisting of grit; caused by grit; full of hard particles.
2. Spirited; resolute; unyielding.
3. (film, literature) Intense and starkly realistic, especially if violent.

how/why would you remake a series which is currently in production in the UK?
I would love to know how the US version could be better.

I really liked the pilot of the British version, then when the series happened they changed the cast all around. Tried watching it but just couldn't get back into the show in its final form, though SyFy may get me to so I don't have to see their silly remake.

CSS time: Work was slow tonight, and me and the other people in instruments/count room ended up talking about books.

Bridget: I really like the Twilight series. I mean I don't usually read but..
Me: You know, I've noticed that.
Josh: What?
Me: The fact that it's people who don't read who like Twilight. People who hate Twilight generally have several bookcases loaded.
Bridget: ..maybe because it's so good it attracts nonreaders..?
Me: *implied facepalm stare* No. Just.. no.
Bridget: It made me cry!
At this point I was reduced to muttering and didn't bother explaining why I refused to read Twilight.

I don't mind her argument, really. Sure they're crap but if non-readers are now reading something rather than just spending the evening doing their nails then there is some faint hope for the future. Call Twilight a gateway book.

I don't know. I'd rather people watch good tv shows than read crap books. If the goal is to make people think things like Twilight won't cut it. Unfortunately, the people who read twilight are more likely to watch Dancing with the Stars than The Wire.

Another difference between Being Human (BBC at least) and Twilight is sure, we've got a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost, but they're friends, there is no sexual tension between them.

There's plenty of sexual tension in Twilight, that's for sure. It has nothing to do with the girl, tho...

Came in here to pile on the "why remake something decent that's still on BBC" idea.
Will add this though: BBC version uses (mostly) physical FX stuff. SyFy went all CGI with it. Doing a werewolf transformation with CGI is closer to Twilight than it is American Werewolf In London.

Invincible: Call Twilight a gateway book

Except that's hardly likely to be true. Every once in awhile, there's one of these breakout successes of crap fiction. People who "never really read" read it, enjoy it, it becomes wildly popular for a few months or years, and then is forgotten. And the next fad comes along and these people are suddenly reading again.

r3wind: Doing a werewolf transformation with CGI is closer to Twilight than it is American Werewolf In London.

You should check out The Wolfman with Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro. Not the greatest movie ever made but the practical FX they used for the werewolf transformations were awesome. They made the cartoon werewolves in Twilight look like a joke, which they already did anyway.

They have the robot wolf heads from American Werewolf in London at Universal Studios, Florida.

The BBC Being Human is an OK, not great, show. So given that, I assume the SyFy version will be entirely unwatchable.

Same here. Loved the pilot. Didn't care for the series.

Now from what I've read about the Sy-Fy remake is that their pilot is closer to the BBC pilot and they are going to divert from the series, especially when it comes to the supernatural factor. The BBC series, mostly, ignored the supernatural elements except for when the story needed it. Mostly, they never gave the rules and history of ghosts, vampires and werewolves. However, the remake will dive greatly into that. And as a fan of supernatural shows and not shows with supernatural gimmicks, I can't wait to see what they do with it.

It's not going to be the same show, numskull. Just like The UK The Office is NOT actually the same show as the US The Office. They aren't the same show because they are different. They are not airing the BBC show Being Human. Did you R the farking A or just fart on your keyboard in futile rage?

And those people are usually the first to bring up "well, good is subjective. If I like it/it's popular, it's good". This may be true, but these people can't accept that they read/watch crap, even if they read it "ironically".

It's ok to like crap on occasion; not everything has to be War and Peace.

That's not entirely true. There have been moments. Granted it's not an over-arcing theme, but it has def. been there. Plus there is the female vampire who gets with George in Season Two.
