I want the two minutes back that I spent reading that article. The payoff is to be made in unmarked, non-consecutively numbered seconds. Do it smooth, and nobody gets hurt...

2003-07-14 12:17:16 AM
My moron was pointed toward the Boobieser, but the second might qualify.

As for the subject, I don't see why I have to pass a driving test, my vehicle has to pass an inspection, be registered and insure my car but not a gun. I see no problem with registration, and maybe even mandatory safety test type thingys.

Oh, please. No one cares about this. I hereby predict this thread won't break 40.

Spot the logic flaw!!!

There is no international evidence backing this up. The Swiss, New Zealanders and Finns all own guns as frequently as Americans, yet in 1995 Switzerland had a murder rate 40 percent lower than Germany's, and New Zealand had one lower than Australia's. Finland and Sweden have very different gun ownership rates, but very similar murder rates. Israel, with a higher gun ownership rate than the U.S., has a murder rate 40 percent below Canada's. When one studies all countries rather than just a select few as is usually done, there is absolutely no relationship between gun ownership and murder.

The opinioner decided to use a unity of measure that was dis-similiar: Where was the USA in the measurement?

2003-07-14 12:27:40 AM
I have no problem with guns.

It's the blokes that have them that gives me the problems.

2003-07-14 12:28:20 AM
ohhh man, this could be a great flamewar, but alas, i have to go to bed to get up for work in the morning. so ill leave with this. michael moore sucks. democrats suck. gun ownership rules, though i concede that charleton heston is senile. that should cover just about anything that comes up.....

....oh yea....pro-choice? i call it pro-death (just in case the comments go that way for some reason)

2003-07-14 12:30:19 AM
There is no correlation between owning a gun and shooting someone with it and not owning a gun and not shooting someone with it. Anyone who says otherwise is either a fool or a Communist.

2003-07-14 12:31:12 AM

Logic and actual familiarity with the subject discussed is not encouraged on FARK.

Intelligent discussions?

lol

2003-07-14 12:31:56 AM
Holy crap! May 8th, 1998?

I post a NEWS FLASH about Ronald Reagan having just passed away and we get an article from May 8th, 1998? What the hell is up with that?

2003-07-14 12:32:09 AM
Well all i can say is guns suck dick.

2003-07-14 12:33:27 AM
Are we moving the gun discussion here from the other thread?

2003-07-14 12:34:41 AM
so they're safe after all? YESS!

2003-07-14 12:35:21 AM
Blokesses, too.

And sometimes the blokesses are scarrier than the blokes.

To misquote Archie Bunker, some women look as they "got more his-mones than her-mones."

2003-07-14 12:35:26 AM
I mean if someone can tell me a good use for a gun i'll shut up.

2003-07-14 12:35:31 AM

SecretAgentWoman:

A car being driven interacts with thousands of other vehicles every day; the overwhelming majority of guns will never be aimed at another human.
It is impossible for government to ensure that only registered owners have guns. It is very easy to ensure that only registered drivers are driving
Registering guns would not prevent criminals from owning guns illegally
No society has ever taken away the right to drive a car while slipping down the slope towards totalitarianism.

Since so many people own guns, perhaps gun training should be mandatory in high school?

2003-07-14 12:35:33 AM
Guns are like children: There are too damned many of them and all the wrong people seem to have them.

BTW, can someone please post a criticism of Michael Moore that doesn't refer to his weight or eating habits? It's getting a bit old. Thanks.

Cheers!

Myth No. 3: The United States has such a high murder rate because Americans own so many guns.
There is no international evidence backing this up. The Swiss, New Zealanders and Finns all own guns as frequently as Americans, yet in 1995 Switzerland had a murder rate 40 percent lower than Germany's, and New Zealand had one lower than Australia's.
So basically, the US people are too stupid and irresponsible to own guns?

/ducks

2003-07-14 12:35:44 AM
Funny that the author didn't have any actual facts, just stuff he seemed to have made up without citing anything. 44% of all these gun myth articles are made up anyways, everyone knows that.

You may want to check out http://www.whoismaryrosh.com/ - seems like Lott (or should we say Mary Rosh) has a "slight" case of schizophrenia in addition to his dodgy use of data.

(You know, like drivers training? OK not mandatory... but offered)

This is my rifle,
this is my gun;
this is for fighting,
this is for fun.

And that's my gun opinion. Next I will give you my opinion on giant marshmallows byquoting a scene from 'Ghostbusters' .

2003-07-14 12:38:08 AM
whoa!! ronald reagan is dead?

2003-07-14 12:38:27 AM
nitemayr, I immediately noticed that.

One sentance says: "Israel, with a higher gun ownership rate than the U.S., has a murder rate 40 percent below Canada's."
What a tremdenously misleading statement. How is Canada even included? How are you comparing the ownership rate of the U.S. and Israel in half the sentence, and the murder rate of Israel and Canada in the other half, while not including any comparison between the U.S. and Canada in either statistic.

Jeez, this just goes to show that both sides use faulty explanations.

"can someone please post a criticism of Michael Moore that doesn't refer to his weight or eating habits? It's getting a bit old. Thanks."

That can be very difficult since most of the legitimate criticisms are that some of the stats in his movie are incorrect even though he makes a valid point.

Check this out, it's pretty good:

Did Reagan really pass away?

2003-07-14 12:43:41 AM
Yeh. Michael Moore is a gun.

In a good way of course.

2003-07-14 12:46:53 AM
If Ronald Reagan really passed away, both cnn.com and reuters.com and foxnews.com have not mentioned it at all, so I would say that it is safe to say it hasn't happened.

This has been around like, forever, but it's appropriate I suppose.

There is no correlation between owning a gun and shooting someone with it and not owning a gun and not shooting someone with it. Anyone who says otherwise is either a fool or a Communist.
That's just plain wrong. If i may bust out a bit of logic here. There is a correlation because having a gun is a neccissary condition for shooting someone with a gun although it is not a sufficent condition for shooting someone. i know this is nit-picky but i think the word you are looking for is causation instead of correlation, and that is a debatable issue.

2003-07-14 12:52:02 AM
come on people, does anyone think to check the source???

2003-07-14 12:52:20 AM
The Department of Justice's National Crime Victimization Survey reports that the probability of serious injury from an attack is 2.5 times greater for women offering no resistance than for women resisting with a gun.

The best way to avoid a rape is crap your pants.

2003-07-14 12:52:48 AM
ArmadilloTamer: Thanks. That's what I'm talking about.

Cheers!

Two flame wars about guns in one day? Seems a bit excessive to me.

I don't have much of an opinion on the subject, as I can see where both sides are coming from (up until certain individuals, usually the right-wingers but not always, start slinging insults). I do believe however that we need to work on eliminating the causes of crime instead of what everyone always seems to want to do and just try to shoot the symptom.

2003-07-14 12:53:27 AM
Funny, My wife and I just got back from a NRA basic pistol class. Other than screaming every time a round went off, she did very well.

Gun control is BS. From you friendly neighborhood Liberal Democrat MrTuffPaws.

2003-07-14 12:54:13 AM
Before it gets too flamy

He does not cover issues of suicide by gun. That is the reason why your gun is more likely to kill someone you know.
