"It was not my intent to make any type of comparison between gay straight alliances and Nazi groups. Rather, I was providing a number of examples of groups that are not endorsed and permitted in Halton Catholic schools, for example, groups in favour of abortion or hate groups of any nature," she said.

But you were making a comparison.

"We don't have Nazi groups either," she is quoted as saying. "It's not in accordance with the teachings of the church. If they wanted to have a club outside of school, fine, just not in school."

You're saying neither one of those things is in accordance with the teaching of the church. Own it. Just don't pick such an inflammatory comparison next time.

Also, do you allow Jewish or Muslim groups? Because those things probably aren't in accordance with the teachings of the church either.

Why all the butthurt about being "compared" to Nazis, especially when you're admitting the extent of the comparison? People need to stop being such wimps about nothing.

I_Hate_Iowa: Also, do you allow Jewish or Muslim groups? Because those things probably aren't in accordance with the teachings of the church either.

I was kind of wondering about that though. When I was in Catholic school, the church was pushing a pretty big Ecumenical movement thing, where we had to learn about other Judeo-Christian religions and everybody was trying to all get along. Those religions are all similar enough, but there are several Christian denominations that allow gay marriages, so I wonder if they're allowed in the Ecumenism or not.
I don't think a Christian denomination practicing human sacrifice would be allowed in, so probably should do the same with one that practices gay marriage.

/Oh no, I compared gay marriage to human sacrifice! The sky is falling!

The Halton Catholic District School Board has come under fire for banning gay-straight alliances from its schools.

Well. That's retarded. If you're gay, don't go to Catholic school.

Seems like any easy solution.

Just a few points to start off this thread:

1. TFA happens in Canada, in case you don't read it.

2. Kids usually don't get to choose where they go to school.

3. Ontario's Catholic schools are not private schools; they're public schools funded by the province in a separate school board, an remnant of dividing the province's schools between Catholic and Protestant in the 1860s.

4. The GSA was actually started by a straight student.

I was going to say (as much as I think organized religion is horse shiat)that they certainly don't have to allow groups they have a fundamental disagreement with to be a part of their school. But your comments kind of put a whole new direction on it.

Nice to get all the information. I'll have to look it up.

It's hard to imagine what context this would be ok in. It's like religious apologists, when you point out horrific and violent commands in the Bible or Koran. "It's, uh, taken out of context!" they stammer. Really? In what context is beheading children who backtalk, or stoning a woman to death for adultery, EVER ok? Answer: it's not. Just admit to what the words really mean, and deal with the just condemnation of them.

My stance remains unchanged from the last thread: This whole problem is easily solved by withdrawing public funding from Catholic schools in Ontario. If religious education is so important then the parents and the church can pony up the bucks and fund the separate system themselves, otherwise if you are going to receive public funds you abide by the Human Rights Code.

Social consciousness does exist in some students in high school. Not many, but it's there.

This is a big problem in Ontario that people have been pretty passive about.

On your property taxes you can mark off if you want to support the Catholic school board or the Public school board, but that is just a census count. The Catholic school board receives money from everyone in Ontario, even people like myself that do not agree with any form of religion. So as an Ontario citizen, I am FORCED to give money to the Catholic church. Every Atheist, Jew, Muslim, and non-catholic Christian pays for their school system.

Many teachers have to pretend to be Catholic if they want to be accepted at 1/3 of the schools in Ontario, and students younger than high school MUST be catholic. They teach superstition, fear, and as seen in this news story bigotry as well.

All with my money.

Sometimes I want to throw up thinking about it.

It doesn't matter. This is politics, not reality. Intent is meaningless. Statements are everything. If you can't think very carefully and tactfully before speaking, then don't speak at all. That's the way the game is played.

Except that most students don't get to pick the schools they go to- their parents choose the school.

You forgot to mention that Catholic schools also receive funding from the church and through various church sponsored fund raisers, so it gives them a huge advantage in equipping their schools and funding extracurriculars, which the public system cannot duplicate.
