Submitter has posted this during his downtime from working in the slums of Rio.

2011-01-10 12:10:17 PM
I'm sure they could use some some anger-filled, angst-dripping, miserably snarling over-acting.

2011-01-10 12:10:24 PM
Well, if this is anything like his movies; Haitians can expect to be relieved when it's over.

2011-01-10 12:10:50 PM
Nice headline subby.

2011-01-10 12:11:50 PM
Good...maybe he'll move there.

2011-01-10 12:13:17 PM
Like the time he "TRIED" to help the Katrina victims.

2011-01-10 12:13:46 PM
Had a European military friend working at the UN relief camp after the earthquake. They had to stop everything for nearly a week when Sean Penn came to visit.

/it takes time to plan a cholera outbreak, dammit!

2011-01-10 12:13:46 PM
YOU TELL EM SPICOLI!

2011-01-10 12:14:27 PM
Good for him. I can't stand the guy, but if he's serious about this, then hell yeah...go boy.

2011-01-10 12:15:13 PM
What a loser. Real good men take the money and then use it to by their buddy a plane.

2011-01-10 12:17:56 PM
Good. Maybe he'll get cholera and die.

2011-01-10 12:20:17 PM
I hope now that this is "his life's work" he evolves into something beyond the hectoring moral scold he's been up 'til this point in his life.

Hopefully he can accomplish something real, something beyond sound bites and photo ops. Of course, given his Hollywood mind-set, he may think sound bites and photo ops ARE accomplishing something real.

Fair enough. Haiti could use the help...but who will kiss up to Al-Jazeera now?

This is what happens when you surround yourself with people who tell you everything you think or do is so terribly important.

2011-01-10 12:34:54 PM
Awesome. I hope they get free screenings of I Am Sam.

What a disgusting bunch of do-nothing-but-complain couch potato types on this thread. And what are they doing for Haiti this morning? If you can't or will not help than just shut up. Aaaggghhhhh!!!!!

2011-01-10 12:36:00 PM
To be perfectly fair, his group is one of the few groups DOING things down there. I was there not too terribly long after the earthquake, and it was interesting to see the UN, USAID, and other aid agencies doing not a damn thing to help out. The UN would ride around in trucks with rifles, but thats all we ever saw them do.

Granted, maybe they just LOOKED like they were doing nothing, and I am sure individuals were working very hard to alleviate the suffering of the Haitian people, but the organizations as a whole were useless.

That country is not going to improve until the US gets the fark out of the way and lets them have the revolution they really need to have. Until Preval is gone and his cronies with him, the people of Haiti will not be able truly recover.

You people don't understand what a commitment this is. He's not just donating his time, he's also arranging for the charities to pay for his personal film crew to show his heroism:

From TFA:
Penn has also added crime-fighting to his list of many talents. In the wake of the devastation, gang activity has become more of an issue. In regards to the gang members who in habit the refugee camp, Penn said, "We hardball the shiat out of them. One incident happens, and it's an immediate hardcore response."

What an outrage if anyone tried to do the same in the US. The racism cries would be flying from Penn and others

IKanHazaBukkit: Well, if this is anything like his movies; Haitians can expect to be relieved when it's over.

I know, what with crap like Mystic River, Tree of Life, Milk, etc. I like Penn's movies. Someone else may not, but at least the guy tries to do more interesting and meaningful roles. Not to mention he directed Into the Wild, the Pledge, and The Crossing Guard, among others.

2011-01-10 12:45:42 PM
He may really need his shotgun this time.

2011-01-10 12:46:27 PM
Penn's buddy Hugo Chavez is a Trotskyite, so perhaps Sean can bring some of that revolutionary thinking to the Hatian dilemma.

You can get a million megalomaniac actors with millions of dollars who may or may not have honest intentions of making Haiti a better place, but if the government is corrupt and isn't willing or able to help their own people, the only outcome will be more homeless and dying people and richer politicians.

We shouldn't be helping countries rebuild if their government is part of the problem.

Good for him, I say.

2011-01-10 12:47:36 PM
You can either make fun of him or help him.

If you're going to make fun of him, you better be helping out yourself.

/Actually, I'm choosing option 3, which is "neither." (Sadly.)

Why does hardballing sound like something involving the hairy potatoes and someone's balloon knot?

He may as well. He's got nothing else going on. Not like his acting career is going anywhere.

I'll go with option 1, and be prepared to help out myself. Help myself out to the kitchen for some chocolate cake. His acting is awful. He made Harvey Milk look like a retard. Mystic River was his typical brooding anger schtick. He peaked at Ridgemont High, which you can never take away from him no matter how much of a self-important idiot he has become.

To be fair, if a white guy's going to get that involved, then maybe, just maybe, the rest of the world will care about Haiti... 200 years of neglect and antipathy due to being the first free black (western) nation leads to some nasty history.

Plus he won't be here bothering us. (BONUS!)

Goonie_Goo_Goo: Good for him. I can't stand the guy, but if he's serious about this, then hell yeah...go boy.

If he's serious about it, and this is not all some sort of attention-whoring, then the only thing he can do that will convince me is to enroll in the Peace Corps for whatever the standard stint is, 2-3 years or whatever. Go where they tell him, do what they tell him, in complete anonymity. Then.....maybe.

Why do I care about Haiti? After all the relief sent to them just resulted in complaints that we weren't helping them enough, I just kind of kept my fingers crossed for an aftershock.

Now that Sean Penn is going, I feel the destruction will be complete.

Just because you mock Sean Penn and don't help in Haiti, doesn't mean you're not helping elsewhere (like here). Except for you I guess.

No more Sean Penn movies where his acting consists of being "Sean Penn"?

Can we get Jeff Goldblum to join him in Haiti? Please?

The guy is reputed to be just another Hollywood douchebag egomaniac. Fine, fair enough. But if he's going to try to help where help is actually needed, then kudos to him.

Also, any Farkers who would like to contribute to a decent organization that does good work in disaster-stricken areas around the world should consider Link (new window). They'll gladly take any amount you can spare.

I think the issue we take is that he can't just go to help. He has to go with a leaky boat and a camera crew. While getting images of the problem out is a good thing, he can spend lots of time (and have a greater impact due to the lowered overhead) getting things done without the cameras.

Lets not forget all the precious resources his team and himself are all consuming.

Tyler Durden hates Sean Penn as much as anybody and he's got a little comparison between his self promotion and his actual activity. (new window)

Fair enough. It isn't like he can do any real harm, and he might actually do some good. Good on 'im.
