Fark changing "Huckleberry Finn" to leave out the offensive words. That was the whole point of why Mark Twain wrote it in American slang of the times.

Makes even less sense than perhaps taking out the Nadsat slang from "A Clockwork Orange."

I don't like it but I could see changing the n-word to "slave" to be sort of acceptable in the context of the book. Censoring "Injun" is way over the line, though.

Best comment on that article:

Dr. Laura used up all the N words. They had none left for this edition.

I think we're undergoing a transition where those words will be unacceptable for a while, until they lose their offensive meaning as new generations are much less exposed to them.

I think they might evolve like the old derogatory words used to describe Italians or the Irish, or the Germans during WWII. The terms used for people of these nationalities seem almost as archaic as describing a gay person as an "invert".

Excellent headline, rage inducing story.

The fact that the word makes people uncomfortable is important- making people look at racism for how ugly it really is helps in understanding why it's still important to discuss it, and how deeply ingrained in our culture it was and still is.

Just... how can ANYONE make a sound argument for why this should happen?

Gone with the Wind paints a loving portrayal of how happy slaves were serving rich white people. But it doesn't use the "N" word, so I doubt anyone will make a case for changing it.

Just like painting fig leaves over top of genitals in classical painting was "updating them."

Leave things alone and use controversial elements in them to teach context and critical analysis.

I had a serious disagreement with a freshman English-type-class professor over N-Word Jim. She thought Twain had hidden all sorts of deep inner meaning in every word of every work he'd ever published; I just thought he called N-Word Jim N-Word Jim because his name was Jim and he was an N-Word.

I think it's sad that we can't even use the N-word in an article, in reference.

Then again, we can't even use it on here.

I thought the writer's point about TBS-ifying The Godfather was a good one, but instead of that being a reason for censoring books, it should be a reason for us not to censor television.

/"faggot" is still OK, though, right?

Are they going to replace all the guns with walkie talkies?

2011-01-04 02:51:39 AM
I admit, I'm not comfortable when I read terms like that, but I much prefer to read the original than to have some bowdlerized edition. Sometimes the author will be seeking to shock the reader, or sometimes it's indicative of the historical context and I'd rather not see that removed. But I suppose there's a market for it and every book has its reader, even if they are seeking a fig leaf edition.
