Billy B:

Agreed. But in such a subjective world, integrity and credibility are that much more important. That's why deception and manipulation by elected leaders has an exacerbating effect in a democracy.

Billy_And_The_Boingers asked:
However I'm curious, what did you mean "our government is older than theirs, technically."?

Well, their current constitution was adopted in 1958, establishing the "Fifth Republic." I do believe they're up to their 7th Republic now, actually.

Oh hey, I just found a better site about the governmental history of France. Have fun.

I suspect that in a country like Italy the numerous parties would LOVE to share power with just one other party. So much so they'd do some back-room dealing with that other party to maintain that power at all costs, all the while maintaining the public face of contrast or choice. This is what has been going on in the USA for a long time. Even the public face of contrast has been diminished as both parties move toward the so-called "center."

Is it my imagination, or has the trend of substituting the letter "K" for "C" exploded these last few days? We got Klinton; Demokrats; Kalifornia, inexplicably...
Just wondering if these people think it's witty to hint that these thing/people are commies, or if they're really seeing Reds all around.

Poll: what's your favorite episode of The Simpsons?

I like the one where Lisa becomes a vegetarian, but I believe my all-time favorite scene is where Homer tries to make the grill, starting with Lisa saying her back hurts, ending with Bart saying, "Yeah, he's done."

/Le Grill? What the hell is that?

That's why I'm here... Live and learn.
Been out of school for 15 years now, never went to a "real" college... on top of that, when I was in hi skool in 1988 they just wanted to get us into the workforce...

Seriously, thanks for the education.

Debate seems to be dead, and has been replaced by:

Democrats doing what they do best, and that's piss and whine about not getting their way. The left wing tendency is to grab on to the most tenuous thread and try to weave it into the largest damn piece of cloth the world has ever seen. If a Democrat president lies under oath, drops bombs without UN sanction, or lines the pockets of their associates, no one says a thing, except to point out to their opponents that they are over reacting. Democrats have their heads up their collective asses.

Republicans, on the other hand, tends to grab on to the most tenuous thread and try to weave it into the largest damn piece of cloth the world has ever seen. If Republican president lies under oath, drops bombs without UN sanction, or lines the pockets of their associates, no one says a thing, except to point out to their opponents that they are over reacting. Republicans have their heads up their collective asses.

Debate on Fark has reached a new low, and has lost any relevence.

An alternative. Saddam was getting weaker every year under sanctions. Not stronger, weaker. That's part of why the vaunted Republican Guard was attacking US tanks in jeeps and pick-up trucks.

There was no evidence that the grip on his country was waning. His military was severely hurt after the first Gulf War, thus the pick-ups and jeeps, but he was still able to handily qualch the Shia uprising after the first war.

Crank up the inspection program (get more than a 100 some inspectors in country), maintain the sanctions, rip up the Executive Order banning foreign leader assassinations

So... delay the war and incite him (or his surviving successor) to start it themselves? Sounds interesting, but it still doesn't get around the whole 'war' thing.

Saddam was weaker as a threat to the rest of the world. He had a firm hold internally over a portion of his territory, but never recovered after Gulf War I to be a real threat to his neighbors, much less to the US.

Man I miss Berke Breathed. If I could bring anyone back to comment on the current situation this country is in, it would be Breathed, and even better, Mark Twain. God I would love to see Twain (Clemens, whatever) rip into Ari Fleischer at a press conference (a real one I mean, not a staged one) and send him home cryin' to momma.

His military, once fourth in the world (supposedly), was certainly a shadow of it's former self. Rebuilding it may have been a slow process, under sanctions.

Hey, I have a theory: What if he tried to acquire some type of Massively Destructive Weaponry (MDW for short). He was vastly rich, after all, and it was well within his power to eventually get such weapons. Someone should look into that.

Don't spread my new 'MDW' theory around too much, though. We wouldn't want to start a flame war.

If the left wouldn't foam at the mouth and shriek hysterically every time the smallest item possibly damaging to the GOP comes up, they might actually win a convert or two.

But the vitriol on display here (and elsewhere), day after day, only reinforces the right's argument that many on the left will turn a blind eye toward or, God forbid, secretly root for, the worst criminal dictatorial regime if it makes Bush and/or the GOP look bad.

Nothing anyone can say can convince me otherwise that there are certain (not insubstantial) elements here that are glad when news comes that makes America look bad.

It appears that a shocking number of Democrats now actually believe this childish idiocy that Bush is a fascist, a Nazi, a drooling moron, a drunk, a drug addict, a liar, a crook, blah blah blah. Unreal. No different than the fools who thought Clinton was a drug-dealing Communist traitor/spy.

The Dems have a crucial election next year with huge implications for the future, and instead of convincing moderates and swing voters, they are falling prey to their own worst partisan instincts. If their strategy is to convince ordinary citizens that nice-guy President Bush is a bloodsucking fascist dictator, then they deserve their 48-state landslide loss.

/old enough to know

Ah... Operation Desert Fox.

How Americans long for the days when the President of the United States, in the midst of impeachment hearings, launched four days of air strikes against Iraq, right before Ramadan, without UN Support, resulting in absolutely NOTHING. Saddam still in power. Arabs hating us more.

Good times, good times...

The Right Wing News article says
"Conservatives are focused on fighting a war against terrorists who want to murder Americans. While on the other hand, the anti-war left is spending much of it's time and energy trying to rewrite history and find minutiae it can distort in it's never ending quest to smear the President. If they spent all that energy coming up with ways to fight against America's real enemies instead of nipping at the ankles of the President, all Americans would be better off."

Gee, kinda like the right spent three years and millions of dollars trying to remove Clinton from office for lying about a hummer!!!

But don't you see, that's a positive thing for any Clinton supporter. Would you rather have your opposition spend time pushing for laws/etc, or railing against some blowjob the nation doesn't care about? I prefer to have my enemies distracted, thankyouverymuch.

As for the millions of dollars? Chump change to the government. That's about as much as a cruise missile.
