If the little douche really had it on and the flight crew knew about it, then have the little douche bag arrested just like everyone else who gets even the slightest bit out of line on a plane now a days.

More likely is that the kid had the music up so loud he wouldnt have heard an engine explode let alone anything as "unimportant" as a safety briefing or captain's announcement.

MasterAdkins: iPhone

Irrelevant. The only important piece of information was the child's religion. Without knowing that, we can't know if he was a home-grown terrist on a dry run, or a happy-go-lucky student on his way to visit his Real American(tm) family. FoxNews, wherefore art thou in our time of need?

Keeping your phone on? That's a backhandin'.
Putting up your headrest during takeoff? That's a backhandin'.
Putting down your tray table during takeoff? You better believe that's a backhandin'.

I don't blame the guy. I get really ragey at folks that think they are "getting away with" something and doing it for no other reason than they don't want to be "inconvenienced" by not getting to listen to music or or play angry birds or make a phone call for a couple minutes out of their EXTREMELY IMPORTANT lives.

Should have used the "Hero" tag.

When the flight crew says "turn off your phone": Turn off your f*cking phone. I know, I know, you read in popular mechanics that there's no real need to have the phones off. But you're not on Popular Mechanics airplane. And you are not that important.

I don't know if it deserves a hero tag, but why didn't the crew do anything about it? Crew could have stopped the flight and had the kid escorted off the plane.

I can relate. I was down south over Christmas and the whole farking place is full of people. Californians, even. He should have stayed in Idaho. That's why they put us up here in the first place--because we can't get along.

Hero Tag. Kid was a douche. There are reasons the damn things have to be turned off. They can interfere with instrumentation.

So he backhanded the poor little snowflake? Poor baby.

There isn't a flight in the US that doesn't have someone using some kind of electronic device on takeoff or landing. I see it ever time I fly. It's not a problem with European airlines, though, they don't seem to care.

Because the crew does not care about stuff that does not really matter.

I wonder what the comments would look like if it was a "thug" who back-handed this old man for not turning off his device?

iPhone =/= plane destructing mobile phone, especially when he was probably using it on airplane mode anyways.

/The only reason they ask you to not use electronic devices on takeoff and landing is so they don't become a hurtling projectile if the plane farks up. As for music, that's so you can hear instructions on how you are probably going to die anyways if something farks up.
//Me? I'd rather keep my headphones on and let chaos reign. Not like the screaming and hollering of terrified passengers would allow much communication anyways in an emergency situation.

I've been telling people for decades now that wrestling has gotten stale. "Oh, this bores you? How about... a title match! No? We can do a tag team match. No? Really? Man, you guys are tough today. How about we put a ladder in there and... no? A casket? A barrel full of fish? How about a cage match? No? Damn..." You know what would be nice? Do it in a 747 mid-flight. Strip the seats out, leave a few fold up chairs and what have you for weapons, and leave the referee nowhere to hide. Smash out a window mid-match for additional drama. Finally, at the culmination of the match, land the plane and make everyone inside wait seven hours until a gate opens.

Funny, I have never turned off my phone on a plane and not one has ever crashed because of it. Then again I do not use the thing when I am on a plane and the announcement has been made so no one would ever notice it is even on. Oh well I like breaking the law......

2010-12-29 09:30:47 AM
I'm certain that in the 137 words of this article we have the complete picture. Enough to draw conclusions about the man, the flight crew, the kid... everyone.

It is just not possible that there is more to this story.

Sign me up, too!!

It amazes me to read that it even got that far. Flight crew should have taken care of that. Although, to play devil's advocate, there is no mention made regarding if the phone was in airplane mode, and what the snotnose was doing with the phone. (Yes yes, during takeoff all electronic devices should be off and stored, I know)

Apparently they did last week when they kicked that actor off for not turning his phone off. I forget who it was though.

I realize that having a phone on (iPhone or otherwise) will probably not crash the plane. However, if they say turn it off, turn the damn thing off. You are not special and above the rules. Dickwad.

Yes, I can imagine a "thug" saying "Sir, you are violating federal law by not turning off your personal electronic device! Don't make me physically intervene to prevent you from breaking the law!"

Watt Durden: why is it that "electronic devices" only affect "planes flown by Americans"

We have the same rule in Australia. We are also more hardcore about stowing things when seated in exit rows. There's none of this stowing things under the seat in front of you on a Qantas flight as there apparently is on American Airlines ones. However, given the amount of crap the average American seems to bring on as cabin luggage, I'm pretty sure that there would be no room overhead for the personal effects of those in exit rows anyway.

2010-12-29 09:41:47 AM
If I was the punchy pops, I would use the "he was putting my life at risk because leaving electronic devices on during landing interferes with the tower" defense.
