Acharne: 15 minutes? Seriously? I'd rather plug the farking thing in.

Where do you live that it takes more than 15 minutes to vacuum?

shower_in_my_socks: I like the cordless feature -- that and weight are the two biggest issues with most vacuum cleaners, and this one seems to address that.

Oh for crying out loud! Do you live in a maze? Do you only have one usable plug? Where do you live where it's that big of a pain in the ass to move the plug if need be?
Seriously a cordless vacuum is like a hoseless hose. WTF?
And if it's actual high quality machinery it shouldn't need constant maintenance! My family has two Kirbys, the oldest of which is around twenty, and it goes to the shop maybe once every four or five years.

700 engineers for a vacuum cleaner?

I'm guessing they're not cheap.

2010-12-28 10:28:59 PM
We have a Dyson, and I love it. Maybe we have been lucky, but we have not had any maintenance issues with it yet, and we have had ours a few years.

Because the Dyson works well, though, I think it has encouraged us to vacuum less, which was not the intended plan.

Am I alone in this sloth?

bagless vacuums are terrible.

/that is all.

2010-12-28 10:34:29 PM
You know, I look at it this way... vacuums have basically not changed in 30 years. Dyson spends all its time telling people how different and great their vacuums are to try and convince people to pay way too much for a vacuum.

Soooo... great. I'm glad they can find people who really think there's value in a $400 vacuum .

and for the same price you can buy 4 great quality regular vacuums, so you can just leave them in whatever room you want, plus a really nice shop vac for the garage and still have money left over for beer and pizza.

RavenOnyx: Okay, so in terms of suckage, which vacuum sucks best?

We have an Oreck and I hate it. I don't know enough about the other ones to make a decision what else to buy, though. My mom has a Dyson (dunno what kind, it's purple?) and it sucks great, they seem to have had it for about 6 years without any issues.

/screw Oreck and their damn expensive bags, I could have bought a bagless with the $ bags cost.. sigh.

The Dyson Animal is the best machine I've ever owned for home cleaning after multiple cats....Bar none...

I live with a Dyson/Apple addict. They seem to go hand-in-hand. But I've noticed the same feeling, and I've come to peace with it.

WhyteRaven74: Dyson Airblade hand driers, look great and work awesome.

Seriously. Those are awesome.

And why the Dyson hate? We have owned (at least) one of practically every kind of vacuum out there, and they all broke - and didn't do a good job sucking before they broke.

Then we finally got a Dyson, and the thing is by far the best vacuum we have ever had. Not flawless by any means, but lightyears ahead of all our other vacuums*.

*except maybe the Roomba, but that really isn't an apples-to-apples comparison

I have to use a Dyson ball about 4 hours a week cleaning an office.

I hate it with the fury of a thousand suns. Yes, it has good suction, but everything else about it is garbage. Crazily over engineered.

I really want to try a dyson, but as an unemployed recent grad, I'm broker than fark.

Haters gonna hate. I've had my Dyson Animal vac for over 6 years now and it works just as well now as it did the day I bought it. When I first got the Dyson, it pulled cat hair out of the carpets. But not just any cat hair. Cat hair, from the cat that HAD DIED 5 YEARS EARLIER. That's how I knew this was a good investment.

My wife, who is the head housekeeper at the local hotel, says Dysons are the most overpriced pieces of yuppy crap she has ever vacuumed with. They don't pick up anything and they don't last. Kirby or Oreck is the way to go.

Lee Bruns: A second hand Kirby or Rainbow is a much better machine.

You're the second one to recommend Kirby, and the first for Rainbow. So I went out and looked them up, to see where I could check them out. Neither company sells online or in stores, only via door to door salesmen! Seriously, I don't understand how they can still be in business...

There's actually a vacuum store called Starks near me that I've never been in. When my current one dies (a $50 Bissell that's reaching it's 6 month lifespan), I might have to go in and see what they recommend.

I just hate the farker in the commercials for dyson products,

"I have nit-picky complaints about a product... so I designed a product that does the same thing, but costs 10x as much."

really? the fan "chops" the air too much? IT'S A GODDAMN FAN!

"oh noes! teh air is too turbulent for my delicate ears! i'd rather have this loud air-foily thingie for $300"

no desk fan should ever cost $300. anyone who buys one is an asshole and should be killed.

ChrisDe, I've got a similar model. The CFM isn't all that, but it'll get to 30 inches hg in vacuum.

Mine's getting a bit old though, probably time to look into a newer model.

2010-12-28 11:05:01 PM
I love my Dyson.

My Dirt Devil, my Oreck... everything I had before I could vacuum my whole living room 5-6 times before having to even check the bag.

My dyson? If I don't vacuum every other day I need to empty the canister twice just to do the living room.

/5 cats

Moved their manufacturing to the Far East

Reason enough to not buy one right there.

If you can't manage to run all of your business in the area your based in you have no reason to do business.
Also not going to pay extra for something made in China

jaytkay: Dyson is the Monster Cable of vacuums.

Not really. There is a difference between a Dyson and regular vacuums.

I had a friend that clowned me for buying a $450 Dyson. I let him borrow it once... and had to hunt him down to get the damn thing back. He used his regular vacuum in his bedroom where his 2 cats and dogs always hung out. Then ran the Dyson over where he already "vacuumed". He still ended up dumping the Dyson's canister 4 times.

I like the vacuum, and I like the airblade, but that "air multiplier"/fan is shiat. I saw a demo of one at Bed Bath & Beyond and it produced the wimpiest gust of air I've ever seen from a "fan".

I love animals, but EWWWWW. Sometimes I am thinking the issue isn't so much the power of the vacuum, but the overall ratio of pets to carpet.
