My first tour to Korea back in 1983, I was shocked at the stench of human poo when I went off base. I learned it was normal as the Koreans used human poo to fertilize their rice fields.

Of course, when in Germany, my stepdaughter had a fit when the German farmers used pig poo to fertilize their fields.

Human excrement is not the best fertilizer for several reasons, but the prime one is increased probability of disease transmission in resulting crops. If there's enough composting time pathogens will be dead, but can you really count on good health practice in a country on the edge of starvation? In most countries bagged fertilizer is so cheap and plentiful you wouldn't bother unless you are a zero-waste organic gardener fanatic. If the article is correct, they are resorting to it out of DESPERATION and it's another sign how close to the edge this culture is.
