All they have to do is connect a thread mill to the computer. As much walking as you do in that game you'd be in great shape in no time.

2010-12-28 04:07:23 PM
Except you need a living room the size of Serpentshrine Cavern to make it work.

What's a thread mill? Is it for tailors?

Says you. I'm just going to pay someone from one of those Chinese gold farms to move around for me while I wash myself with a rag on a stick.

In other news, that porn game for Kinect just became very likely.

It'll never catch on.

Now, when you can play WoW without even moving your fingers, count me in.

I can't even imagine how fast I'd pass out from exaustion trying to play my Enhancement Shaman. I'd have to roll a holy pally.

tinyarena: Now, when you can play WoW without even moving your fingers, count me in.

Ah. You want to play a healing priest.* That's pretty close. I mean, one finger has to twitch slightly to hit your heal macro... but you can be watching TV or getting a BJ from your odd gamer girlfriend at the same time...

... while leaving you mic on.
... while on the raid's Ventrilo channel.

/still scarred by that night

*Quit before the first expansion so one-button classes may be different now.

I recall once seeing two guys set WoW up with a treadmill. One was severely out of breath by the time his mint Night Elf made it to Darnassus. The other wasn't, he was more fit from the get go, but you could tell he got a work out.
The walking speed of WoW characters would wear out most players.

From the looks of the video, doing 35 jumping jacks = "fire." Doing a crane kick = "stop." Doing the macarena for about 20 seconds = "rotate the camera." What I mean to say is, the movements required for simple tasks are retarded and have no relation whatsoever to the action you are actually trying to perform on screen. FAIL.

I can't watch the video at work but I am asumming that this a Proof of Concept. Taking a Kinect and forcing it to work with WoW.

There could be applications for this machine that are not just game related.

Hacking the kinect and trying to use it to tank would be too much of a hassle -- specially with the new pally interface.

2010-12-28 07:40:31 PM
Can the Kinect detect me rolling my face on the ground? Because that's the only way I can play my ret pally.

Yeah, my arms would fall off playing my rogue. Mastery buffed SnD + Hero, both weapons under 1.0 speed...

Tho kicking to kick would be cool.

Don't worry, he's just an idiot. It's actually really cool. You use your left hand to select targets and your right hand in various motions to press hotkeys. Leaning forward and back moves. I'm not too keen on the leaning, though, I'd rather it be from stepping forward or back.

Switch to Combat. 2 2 2 2 1 3 over and over. Map 4 to stealth and cheap shot and you're done.

One of the things I'm sure most people hate about playing World of Warcraft is the lack of physical movement needed to play.

I'd like to believe that's sarcasm, but I don't think it is.

Did anyone else get the idea that the idea for this project came from Evan Suma's own mom biatching at him for not getting from in front of that damn computer?

Also did that steven segal looking guy at the end really say diabetus, twice?

This is starting to get interesting.
Assuming Microsoft and developers play their cards right, I think what we're seeing is the death of the computer mouse in its earliest stages. Replaced by a combination of gesture controls and touch screens.

Tablets may actually become viable work machines...

You know the Wii's initial momentum?

You know how that's died out?

People get tired of a gimmick real fast.

True enough, except they sold quite a few Wii's before the hype ran its course.
...and then all of their competitors copied the underlying idea with their own spin on it. Now you've got phones and other devices with accelerometers and gyroscopic controls coming as a standard feature.
Is it still a gimmick if a new system cant ship without it?

What I'm thinking is that gesture controls do the one thing a mouse cant. Which is to bring the space and comfort of a controller without needing an open surface space or requiring you hold something in hand.

Think of all the cluttered cubicle owners that would look at this as a Godsend.

/For Christmas I give you: Two square feet of desk space!

This is pretty downright cool. I didn't realize how well it can figure out your limbs and joints.

This video inspired me to try and work in the Kinect into my custom arcade cabinet project that's underway. I think playing old joystick + 2/4-button arcade/console games with this might be pretty fun when I have company over--especially if booze is involved!

...just had an evil vision of what Kinect arcade games might be like.

/One custom Donkey Kong cabinet.
/one sliding play surface, rigged with hydraulics.
/one polaroid camera to immortalize the faceplants.
