SharkTrager: 2chris2: In case you didn't realize it, the movie is at least somewhat based on the westboro baptist people:

Which makes the title Red State total fail.

Because a state that has voted republican by an average margin of 15-20% in presidential elections over the last couple decades is certainly not a red state, no sir.

This is not a Christian bashing movie. KS has stated that he is very much a Christian. So please, take the "this is anti-Christian!" herpaderp the hell outta this biatch.

still hope it's a good movie.

You have some horrible taste then because that was an awesome teaser and pretty much everybody I see commenting on it across the internet agrees.

I love how idiots get butthurt when you call them out for being idiots and they stand by their right to be idiots like they're repressed minorities. Morons.

/Happy to see KS breaking out of his shell, intrigued by the trailer, and hoping it will be worth it

Nabb1: captain_heroic44: Nabb1: Does anyone actually have an explanation for the title? I like Kevin Smith, so I'll be a bit disappointed if there is some sort of knock that all "red states" are full of sociopathic religious nut jobs. Apart from Mississippi, anyway.

How come it's acceptable for Fox to be fair and balanced, but it is unacceptable for Kevin Smith to be fair and balanced the other way?

Honestly, does nonsense like that seem intelligent to you before you write it and hit "Add Comment"?

It is intelligent. It is a satirical comment on the claim that Fox is "fair and balanced." Clearly it went over your head. But that may not be your fault. Longitudinal studies have demonstrated Fox's deleterious effects on the brain.

I think it looks great. I love to see these self-righteous pricks get butthurt over someone with more success then them. Like they have a degree in film and nothing to show for it.

2010-12-24 02:43:28 PM
The controversy I'm hoping this will cause will probably wind up being more entertaining than the film.

2010-12-24 02:47:18 PM
So this is not a comedy?

I'm curious to see it because this is a different type of movie for Kevin Smith.

2010-12-24 02:47:38 PM
Wow, that... does NOT look like a Kevin Smith movie. I actually happen to like most of his movies, but I'm more interested in this than another one of his typical type.

AkaranD: Not to be a moron, but what in the fark is this movie about?

All I got was "gay people bad, rape and shoot them," or did I misview?

IMDB describes it as "A horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America."

Kevin Smith decribes it as "a strict non-comedy saying, "It's a nasty-ass $4mil horror flick with few (if any) redeeming characters."

So, WBC+Jesus Camp+Saw+Hostel (take your pick).

JohnnyAqua: This film needs Jay and Silent Bob!

He was talking about the continuation of Jay and Silent Bob in two recent podcasts, both is "Plus One" with his wife and original "Smodcast" with Moser. He was mostly referencing it to the fact that the Wienstiens were talking making Clerks 3 without him, and that he specifically had those two characters carved out of the sale contract when he sold them the Clerks name.

He mentioned that he never wants to play that character again, not so much that he hates his past or that he regrets doing it, but that he just feels that now that he's 40 that part of his life is done. Those characters, he figures, just get sadder and sadder the older they get.

2010-12-24 03:13:57 PM
Will it be all funny at first and then all come to a screaching halt when he tries to make it real by explaining that true love is some one who brings you lunch when you have a bad day at work? Even when you weren't supposed to be there that day?

2010-12-24 03:20:32 PM
John Goodman is in it, lolwut?

I definitely want to see this movie now.

Stephen Root is in it, so it's probably worth seeing.

douchebag/hater: Wow. Kevin Smith decides to insult over half the population of the United States. Just one great career move after another, huh, Kevin. Farking allah, what an idiot.

He already pissed off every Catholic on Earth when "Dogma" was released 11 years ago. After that, he married a hot chick, had a kid, directed more movies, acted in a few others, got paid to talk on stage, wrote stories for Batman, Daredevil, Green Arrow and Spider-Man and ran a comic shop.

Yeah, that Kevin Smith is such a stupid pile of fail.

You forgot owning outright a mansion with a roof top pool that was sold to him at cost by Ben Affleck. He occasionally threatens to auction off or give away shirts he left in the closets.

You can't seriously think that anywhere near half of the country are hateful right-wing nutjob religio-fascists. It can't be more than 25% at the most, and they're mostly concentrated in a few states at a very high density of derp. Besides, pissing them off is a major hobby for a lot of us. I happen to take great joy in farking with these stupid pricks. You can't reach them with logic and reason, might as well try to make them self-destruct.

1) Most voters self-identify with conservative viewpoints approximately 45%. Self-identifying liberals = 20%
2) The bigots in the US are, for the most part, liberals who can't accept that people with differing viewpoints are just as intelligent as any one on the Left
3) The happiness you find in 'Pissing off stupid pricks' - as you so indelicately put it - shows your intolerance, not their's.
4) Smith's attempt at drumming up controversy will as fall as the dvd sales for his last movie.
5) It must hurt to be as narrow-minded as you are. But then you are a liberal so that makes every thought and opinion you have the only ones worth having, doesn't it?

This not only looks awesome, but judging from all the conservative biatches on this thread, is going to cause a whole wave of butthurt. Kevin Smith, even if this movie ends up sucking, I thank you for making it.

thamike: DarthBrooks: Liberal snuff film.

Remember when Kevin Smith made great movies?

What?

And no.

Yeah. Clerks was epic just because it was just some guy from Jersey screwing around with a 16 millimeter camera, and Mall Rats was okay, because it was that guy who made Clerks, but by Chasing Amy, it was, this guy needs to go to a film school, and oh, a writer's workshop wouldn't hurt, either. But he found his comfort zone (good call, yarnothuntin) and he hasn't grown any as a director or writer since. I'm giving it a pass.

According to Kevin it has nothing to do with Red/Blue politics. If I could find the exact time stamp on the pod in which he mentions that I would, but there's so many to choose from.

Well then, that's a very disingenuous title. The trailer is clearly invoking an extreme social conservative red state vibe.

Differing viewpoints? Like "The Earth is 6000 years old"? "Dinosaurs and humans existed together"? "America is a Christian nation"? "Evolution is a myth"? Because I will gladly admit to being bigoted towards morons.

We got that from Netflix last spring. It's part of 8 Films to Die For, Part IV. Not at all a bad movie either.

Basically, this has a very strong cast made up primarily of actors that are usually stellar in their supporting roles. John Goodman and Stephan Root alone are enough for me to give it a shot but with Michael Parks, Melissa Leo and Anna Gunn who was really good in Deadwood and Breaking Bad, this has the potential to really let Kevin Smith shine.

Looks like his wife has a small role but no Jason Mewes. I wonder if that means he's back on the horse.

Nah, Mewes is clean and sober. Him and Smith have both said so on Twitter and in multiple podcasts. Is good to see him staying sober.

KWPLunchbox: Looks like his wife has a small role but no Jason Mewes. I wonder if that means he's back on the horse.

Nope. Mews is on the "Jay and Silent Bob Get Old" podcast every week. They started it after he fell off the wagon a few months or a year back when his doctor prescribed him pain meds and he started abusing them. The Podcast was, in their words, a world-wide intervention. They told his entire story, let everyone know what signs to look out for, and to essentially make him accountable to the audience in addition to family and friends to stay clean.

He just got done filming some movie called "Zombie Hamlet" that sounds, by all accounts, pretty damn lame. But he's working and making money without the help of Smith, which is good. Also he does various TV roles and cameos.

Shadowknight: notimeforhippies: Looks like porn for Christian haters. Hopefully it won't be couched that way but rather as a really scary horror flick. Religious nutjobs can be dang scary. (Ask Berg and Pearl.)

Would this movie have ever been made if the religion that these people were bonkers for was Islam? The irony is that if there were Christians out there who were this nuts Kevin Smith would never have had the balls to make this film. This film is proof of the tolerance of the Christian community.

Not really so much as the fact that the majority of the United States would like to see each and every crazy fundie involved in a terrorist bombing thrown into the deepest, darkest, derpiest hole they could find.

Trust me, if the southern, evangelical nutjobs (like Phelps and his ilk) thought they could get away with blowing people up and/or mowing down a bunch of non-believers like some of the crazy fundamentalist Muslim groups in Buttfarkistan can get away with it (or stoning rape victims...) because their governments allow it, they would in a heart beat. Notice that the Muslims that live and work in the US don't go around blowing shiat up either.

Religion is religion, and the only reason that the current brand of nutjobs haven't gone so far is that our country won't sanction or turn a blind eye to it.

Now, as to why Smith chose to go after this religion: He said that after watching Phelps and his ilk, he could see them forming a little cult in the middle of nowhere and killing a bunch of folks that they deem unbelievers. He just wanted to make a thriller, and it seemed like decent material to work with. He's not insulting Christians (he's a Catholic himself), he's insulting idiots.

No, the Phelps are con artists. Their shtick is to get people so angry at them that someone throws a punch, then they can sue the city for not providing enough protection.

2010-12-24 10:05:51 PM
They also only send women and kids to protest, because the men know they would get beat-up. Cowards.

The movie looks like to be an filmic attack on the Westboro Baptist type of churches, which I don't have a problem with.

Unfortunately, since Smith named it "Red State," he's going to alienate a good portion of his viewing audience.

Honestly, I don't want to go see a movie about a crazy Westboro-like "Christian" church, as they're in the news seemingly every other week.

What Smith should have done is go after the "Christian" churches AND the Muslim extremist churches. But, that's not going to happen as everyone's scared shiateless of the Musilms worldwide.

My big question is, who is the movie for? Who is the demographic? Left wingers who loathe baptist hypocrites? Why would Joe six pack want to see this movie?

2010-12-25 02:26:26 AM
I think Smith is too smart to alienate a huge chunk of his potential audience by sugggesting this is what folks in "Red States" do. It's likely a reference to something said - or that happens - in the flick.

Fortunately, controversy works for him. See: Dogma

True-and he might be the sole reason to give this flick a chance.
