Wow.

Kevin Smith decides to insult over half the population of the United States.

Just one great career move after another, huh, Kevin.

Farking allah, what an idiot.

The_Philosopher_King: I think it could be good. It seems to have a different kind of look. A good DP makes all the difference. I am going to give it a shot.

KS has been up and down for me. I thought he did well with Dogma and J & SB strike Back. Those types of movies seemed to fit his style.

His podcast with Mewes was some of the best stuff I heard all year. But I am a sucker for behind the scenes info.

But KS has directed one of my favorite scenes.

Yeah. Look at how bad it worked out for everyone else that pissed off middle America through their art.

The Beatles (bigger than Jesus)
ANY shock rock act (Manson, et al)
Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp)
Stephen King (Children of the Corn)

etc

And no.

Does anyone actually have an explanation for the title? I like Kevin Smith, so I'll be a bit disappointed if there is some sort of knock that all "red states" are full of sociopathic religious nut jobs. Apart from Mississippi, anyway.

still hope it's a good movie.

I get the feeling it's a horror film double entendre. But what do I know? Come on, everybody! Let's drag the rotting, reeking carcass of the politics tab into the showbiz tab, and inject some prickly Christmas cheer!

You can't seriously think that anywhere near half of the country are hateful right-wing nutjob religio-fascists. It can't be more than 25% at the most, and they're mostly concentrated in a few states at a very high density of derp. Besides, pissing them off is a major hobby for a lot of us. I happen to take great joy in farking with these stupid pricks. You can't reach them with logic and reason, might as well try to make them self-destruct.

No, he's a bloody idiot, bigoted, hate monger.

However, he can say whatever the hell he likes, so long as the rest of us can say ours just as loud.

That may be but hes still a democrat, red states are not right wing fundies who think abortions should be outlawed and alcohol should be banned.

Also, kkk was started by demycrats and I bet you didnt know Lincoln was a republican!

I had no idea what the movie was about until then. Still not entirely sure what it is about but yeah, it sure as hell doesn't look like the comedy I was expecting. Wow.

Looks like porn for Christian haters. Hopefully it won't be couched that way but rather as a really scary horror flick. Religious nutjobs can be dang scary. (Ask Berg and Pearl.)

Would this movie have ever been made if the religion that these people were bonkers for was Islam? The irony is that if there were Christians out there who were this nuts Kevin Smith would never have had the balls to make this film. This film is proof of the tolerance of the Christian community.

Now it is called Red State because of popular impression. It may not be true. But most of us know that middle America has a lot more intense believers than the coasts.

gayspirituality.typepad.com

I also don't think it is a religion bashing movie. Just a wacko bashing movie. KS is a Catholic and talked about being a believer in more than one podcast.

Not really so much as the fact that the majority of the United States would like to see each and every crazy fundie involved in a terrorist bombing thrown into the deepest, darkest, derpiest hole they could find.

Trust me, if the southern, evangelical nutjobs (like Phelps and his ilk) thought they could get away with blowing people up and/or mowing down a bunch of non-believers like some of the crazy fundamentalist Muslim groups in Buttfarkistan can get away with it (or stoning rape victims...) because their governments allow it, they would in a heart beat. Notice that the Muslims that live and work in the US don't go around blowing shiat up either.

Religion is religion, and the only reason that the current brand of nutjobs haven't gone so far is that our country won't sanction or turn a blind eye to it.

Now, as to why Smith chose to go after this religion: He said that after watching Phelps and his ilk, he could see them forming a little cult in the middle of nowhere and killing a bunch of folks that they deem unbelievers. He just wanted to make a thriller, and it seemed like decent material to work with. He's not insulting Christians (he's a Catholic himself), he's insulting idiots.

Thing is, Fox News pretends to be, you know, NEWS. This is just a movie. And a silly thriller/horror movie at that. I don't think it's supposed to be any grand political statement anymore than "The Bone Collector" or "Seven" was supposed to be.

spidermann Plus, it looks like it could actually be a thriller worth seeing.

Ha...on 'AICN' they'd call you a plant. Smith turns up on boards all the time-usually quoting obscure release schedule data, he talks about it on his Comic Con appearances

*SPOILER*
In the test screening the family is forced to drive thru Red States because an evil airline kicks them off for being too fat

Any Pie Left: i still have no idea what this movie is about.

Crazy American religious zealots with guns are afraid of the feds taking their guns and religion away. The feds investigate them and then the crazies fire at the feds, and then the feds shoot back. Then Jay dances naked to the tune of "Car Wash" at the end. Silent Bob holds the boom box.

According to Kevin it has nothing to do with Red/Blue politics. If I could find the exact time stamp on the pod in which he mentions that I would, but there's so many to choose from.

Mainly because he's going to get a movie done cheaply, and, after DVD and rentals are added in, it's going to make 10-20 million.

I watched the trailer and then went to the Wikipedia to figure out what the hell I just watched.

"Red State begins by following three horny high school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying "holy" force with a fatal agenda."

Yeah, I didn't get that from the trailer at all.

/waiting for the inevitable "go back to watching Michael Bay movies you uneducated heathen" response

It didn't have that feel, no. I didn't get the horny teenage thing either. But personally, that Wiki description doesn't sound right. I mean, Smith said that he wanted to play this one straight. And that description sounds like the setup to one of his comedies.

Not putting it past him, or saying that it's wrong, but it just doesn't sound right.

Well, you missed the point. I even said it wasn't always true. But the belief is there. Any individual wacko is not limited to location or political party. That's not the point. There are many more communities in that red region that take it very serious. Towns that you pretty well must go to a church on Sunday. At least they almost don't care which Christian Church you pick, but you must pick one.
