Well, they're right. It's not a geek sport. It's a game. With everything but Yul Brynner.

The kid is a chess master at 9.
The father is a physicist.
The daughter plays violin and studies dance.

Sounds like a nice family. At least an intelligent one. I honestly thought those were extinct.

dont worry, they are just preparing for the future where the boy plays chess in the park for booze money, the daughter is clearly a kinky stripper and the father will lose his mind talking about higgs bosons and such.

Plenty of time for this family to end up like all the others.

Based on my experience with some players of my university's collegiate chess team (2nd in nation), I can attest that some players FEEL like rock stars.

I guess it's a way of making up for the fact we play in the NAIA

Chess has been an exhibition sport in the Olympics for a while now. I suppose that's one of the benchmarks for something being a sport as opposed to merely a game.

Dammit. See, chess is one of many games that I am no longer allowed to play. It's because I play to lose without telling anyone. They have to figure it out as I get happier and happier by throwing my pieces away.

I think I learned that from playing the surprisingly challenging Suicide Chess on the Amiga. Though it was still easier than the Spectrum port of 1k chess from the ZX81 that I tried to lose to. That one was quite literally incapable of putting you into mate. I spent an hour shuffling my lone king around into a corner while the computer slowly moved its pawns up on the other side of the board. And it still couldn't get me into mate with three queens and two rooks at its disposal.

Do you do this because you found you are not particulary good at chess? I am sure if you practice a bit, you won't have to hide your lack of talent behind this facade.

No, it's because I have an odd sense of humour and don't play games properly. I'm not terrible at chess, but not great either. I actually enjoy chess puzzles. It's more along the lines of the fact that I only play Scrabble when we're allowed to make up our own words.

Same here, but why does everyone always quote just the one song? There are better songs on the album despite that one hitting actual charts.

/They say chess is a war, playing with pawns just like Poland...

This.

/Everybody's playing the game, but nobody's rules are the same. Nobody's on nobody's side.
