It is meant to crack down on media content that "makes an apology of crime," "promotes unrest in the population" or "challenges legally established authorities."

So basically free speech is illegal in Venezuela. Yeah, I pretty much knew that already.

I'm now 99% sure Gato N is an AI program written for Drew that specifically sniffs out headlines and "liberal" keywords to respond with trolling derp in order to drum up website hits.

Hatred of totalitarians is not a partisan issue. FOAD Chávez.

I'm not really seeing this as a reduction of freedom. The United States has been trying to oust him from his legitimately elected position for more than a decade now. Of course he would want to restrict the flow of US propaganda.

As we saw with Iran when they tried to 86 the internet during the protests, proxies will be coming, i bet.

/don't know, i'm not 1337 enough to know how proxies work

So what's actually wrong with what Gato Negro said? I know several liberals who admire Chavez. I don't know if they love him, but they sure do idolize him. Since when do Farkers get all righteous over political pigeonholing? Welcome to Fark.

Oh, and fvk Chavez and his power thirst.

jdproctor: all of the really good people finally got in charge and did all of the really good things for people?

Socialism is when the farked get sick of being farked by the farkers and rise up and fix shiat. Socialism is greed's mitigating factor.

Socialism is not totalitarian dictatorship, nor is it fascism, nor is it communism.

Unfortunately, power corrupts, and so Socialism is ultimately self-defeating.

The world turns. The pendulum swings.

Gato Negro: FTFA: The move consolidated the socialist leader's hold on power

Do you get EVERYTHING wrong?

1) In spite of what the article claims, Venezuela is not socialist. It is, by definition of what is happening there, Fascist. Look it up. (Hint: Fascism is the state ownership of business, which is exactly what they're doing.)
2) I'm liberal and I hate Chavez. So that disproves the 2nd thing you said.
Or perhaps you just like believing what you believe instead of facts. It's a rather religious fervor you have there....

Freedom of speech will always lead to a state's legitimacy increasingly being challenged. And there is nothing to which a state is more violently opposed than to have its authority undermined. The more criticism jeopardizes the rule of the state, the more the state will attempt to censor its critics.

WTF Indeed: Gato Negro: FTFA: The move consolidated the socialist leader's hold on power

Liberals just love that... and they love Chavez.

Dude, if your gonna show Americans meeting with America's enemies drop the Reagan meeting the Taliban in the Oval Office picture. This is America, go big or go home.

I want to make sure you really mean this metaphor.
So, Reagan helped the Taliban because "the enemy of my enemy", and he thought it was worth that evil because it had a major effect combating the greater evil of Communist military expansion. [whether or not he was right is outside the scope of this thread]
So are you saying that a bunch of leftist celebrities have supported Chavez because the freedoms he denies to Venezuelans are a price worth paying in return for the inconvenience he causes to American imperialism?

If so, could you flesh this out a bit more? I'm fascinated.

2010-12-21 11:53:36 PM
My god the trolls are trying way too damn hard.

2010-12-21 11:54:19 PM
Gunny, same goes for you.
Rumsfeld considered Iran/Iraq a "Good War", one that would ideally go on for as long as possible. I'm not asking if you think he was correct, but whether you think Chavez's American Leftist supporters are adopting a similar strategy, and (if so) whether they're correct to do so?

GaryPDX:
Are you trying to argue Chavez isn't expanding his power?

no, he clearly is but that generally appears to be the will of the people, at least in a certain sense.

Do you really believe there is democracy there?
yes.

2010-12-21 11:56:20 PM
@Airfoilsguy, I don't suppose it matters to you in the slightest that Obama is not even close to being a radical? He's actually a moderate conservative*. Or perhaps, like Gato N, you just like believing what you believe instead of what's actually happening right in front of your face.

* Gives huge tax cuts to the rich, denies true health care reform to the needy, allows the FCC to deny net neutrality, keeps Guantanamo open, continues the war in Iraq and huge Halliburton contracts, allows offshore drilling right after the biggest oil spill in history, etc.

/Stop with the "Obama Socialist" crap already

yes.

Really?....So you believe some cult figure can do whatever he wants because enough people vote for "Zieg Heil"?

didn't really make a value judgment one way or another on it,just said that it is democracy.
