Sounds like he wasn't even an employee, just some dude with concealed carry who decided to be a hero. If no one has been hurt and the bad guys are running out the door, jesus criminy don't be a dumbass, let them the fark go.

Or get shot and spend a month or two in the hospital over a case of beer.

And the above hold true if the guy was an employee as well.

But I thought people don't commit crimes where they have relaxed gun laws because they are afraid of getting shot themselves... That's what I was told by the right wingers.

Sounds to me like the criminals just strap up and pop off with their piece preemptively. That's even worse.

1/10 because I started to type a response.

If you read the featured article, the thug shot first, and the innocent man returned fire because, you know, he had just been SHOT.

Cities (and states) with the tightest gun laws have the most armed thugs carrying illegally and the most gun crime. The only difference in this story is that someone defended themselves.

A horse walks into a bar. The bartender asks "Why the long face?" The horse does not respond because it is a horse. It can neither speak nor understand English. It is confused by it's surroundings and gallops out of the bar, knocking over a few tables.

At least there were no fatalities and now that that little punk knows the dude is packing heat, that will probably be the last time he tries that at that store again.

Actually, ONE armed thug is off the street, along with one vigilante with poor judgment.

Seriously? One was a 17-year-old punk who was carrying illegally (and probably had no real training)--the other was a guy that had just gotten shot . . . I wouldn't expect much accuracy out of either one to begin with.

Seems to me from the article that the guy simply was going to stop the teenagers from leaving the store with stolen goods, and for that the teenager pushed him down then shot him.

Only once he'd been shot did he take out his own firearm and defend himself with deadly force. Explain to me, exactly, how this makes him a "vigilante with poor judgement"? Sounds to me more like he was trying to be a good samaritan and for his trouble got a bullet wound and had to defend himself from the possibility of getting killed.

Or is it preferable now to just let criminals do whatever they choose unimpeded?

Well, you're both full of crap. Local and state regulations matter very little since guns are available from cities and states with less strict regulations, and places with looser gun laws are more likely to have less crime not because of an armed populace, but because the area is more rural and white, and therefore has a lower crime rate to begin with.

Makes me wonder what the race of all parties involved in TFA are.

@MorphOSX

I agree with you on the fact he was trying to do a good thing, honorable even. I could see myself possibly doing the same thing in that situation, even though it's blatantly unwise (even if it is courageous).

What made a "poor judgment" was the fact that he was outnumbered 3:1 to begin with. Even armed as he was, there's huge potential to get jumped, overpowered, disarmed, and shot with your own weapon. The gun on his hip was his metallic courage.

Not to mention, is it really worth getting in a brawl with some teenagers--and possibly ending up using deadly force--all over the shoplifting of some beer?

No, it's not--and that's why it's poor judgment.

Most people, when caught stealing and blocked at the door, will at least drop the stuff or something. It doesn't seem like the victim was REALLY trying to block their path, but just standing in front of them in a weak attempt to stop them.

The article doesn't really delve into specifics. We don't know how big of a vigilante he was being.

Yes. Yes it did. Please tell me where in TFA does it reference the fact they both shot from "point blank" range? Pray tell.

citation needed.

And other civilised western countries with much tighter gun controls than any city or state in the USA have much less gun crime. e.g., Australia has much tighter gun controls than the USA. It also has the same rate of violent assault as the USA and roughly the same rate of burglary, but nearly 1/3rd the homicide rate. So guns aren't keeping you safe from assault or burglary, and they definitely aren't keeping you safe from being murdered.

in the context of all westernised democracies, gun control != high crime. using guns in crime is an American problem, and it's probably linked to the gun culture.

It's dumb, but it happens more than you might think. It happened to me and my friends once. Buddy was running out of the store with a couple twelvers and somebody tripped him. He went down hard, but got up and ran. They followed us in their car.
