"The recent litigation over the use of 'Holiday In Cambodia' for use in a Levi Jeans commercial"

To be fair, Jello Biafra has always stated that he is disgusted by that whole issue, and that it's mostly the rest of the Dead Kennedys who sold out. He's cool.

Some people sell out for a higher paying job. Anyone who has ever quit a job they loved for something they hate but that pays the bills, has sold out.

Maybe it will come out that she was approached by the company to write a song, signed the contract, and then wrote it for the sheer irony value. Who knows/cares?

who airbrushed her teeth?

2003-07-09 11:54:22 AM
honestly i must be blind, i dont see a thing wrong with her teeth in that bottom pic. As long as they aren't growing through her head like Lisa Simpson, or can crack open a can of soda with her "big toof", then that is a pretty small fault.

She hasn't got a thought in her pretty little head but goddam I love that body of hers to death.

What's the deal in the video where they're doing all these ads with Jewel in them, then they zoom in and hold on a big sign that says "JEWEL" - - only they cut off the last two letters?

Anti-semitism?

Quoth Bill Hicks:

The minute you do a tv commercial, you're off the artistic payroll.

2003-07-09 11:57:03 AM
and also....doesn't Jewel just seem like the poster child for PETA? With her "artistic" tendencies and her caring and compassion for the lesser class and all...that said, seems kind of strange that she would be boinking a rodeo star. PETA has been screaming about rodeos for years....Guess things aren't always as they appear, or something equally insightful....

many american celebrities do commercials in foreign countries, they dont like to ruin their american image...

2003-07-09 12:00:38 PM
Only a small percentage of the rodeo'ers make bank...Most of those poor slobs are living hand to mouth. Unless they can get a shiatload of sponsors, they live off whatever winnings they make in a weekend. The specialized things like the PBR (pro bull riders) and whatnot, they do have a little easier time of it, but for the most part, only about 10% of the rodeo people really make any money...

I was a DJ in Adult Contemporary radio when Jewel's first CD ("Pieces of You") came out. The second single "You Were Meant For Me" went through two totally different remakes (totally re-recorded) before radio stations were willing to play it. That's three versions of the song (including the album version). The album version is slow and acoustic, maybe just her & a guitar. I've only heard it a few times, and it never got played on the radio. Then she re-recorded the song with a band- electric guitars, drums, a Nashville twang in her voice, backup singers. Nobody played that one either. A third recording made it on the radio and the CD sold millions. Of course, the recording you heard on the radio is not on the CD.
I am not always opposed to artists remaking a song to try and get on the radio. For example, The Beatles re-recorded "Revolution" because they felt the acoustic version on The White Album would not play on the radio (John was outvoted on this issue).

True. And actually, I have lots of respect for Sugar Ray because they at least copped to selling out.
I don't really like the band's music, but when asked why they changed their style from hard rock to pop - they said "purely because of the money." - there is no shame in that. It is tough business to make it in without selling out especially now - I know (and have played with) bands that have been together for 5 to 10 years; bands that are consistently playing well known clubs, have put out numerous professional demos produced by some of the biggest names in the industry...and they didn't make it because:

A) Their image was not marketable

Or

B) Their music wasn't "hooky" enough

So they had two choices:

Sell out and make it...
Or don't
...and find another line of work.

So I have absolutely no problem with sell outs. If you make it in that dirtbag business, you have (more than likely) paid your dues.

What is retarded is writing a song based on the idea that there is something wrong with endorsement deals, and that all of society is selling out - and you should be true to yourself and not be a sell out. Then record a video making fun of other pop stars with endorsement deals...

... and then turning around and using that very same song to sell a product other than the song itself.

For some reason, people who demand integrity from their musicians don't demand the same amount of integrity from the people who make their toasters.

Steve Albini said it best...

"Anybody who thinks we overstepped the playground perimeter of lyrical decency (or that the public has a right to demand "social responsibility" from a goddamn punk rock band) is a pure mental dolt, and should step forward and put his tongue up my ass. What we sing about is none of your business anyway."

The answers to all of life's problems can be found in the liner notes of 'Pigpile'

ringersol and Enigmamf:

If you give up a job you like for one that pays more money because you have a family to feed and take care of doesn't mean you are selling out, nor does quitting a crappy job at McDonalds, because I doubt you are using too much creativity there. However, if you are an artist that already has millions of dollars, has no family to support, and does something purely for the money, I would consider that selling out.

Chewbacca Jones

a song about how commercialism is bad... i just don't see that in Jewel's Intuition.

far as i can tell, it's a song about people's warped values and sense of self-worth and 'reality' when they put stock in 'celebrity'.

be it 'style' or 'beauty' or any particular trendy thought (peta, dianetics, etc).

it's kinda an aknowledgement that celebrities do and say whatever they need to, to sell. and that what you see is not at all what they are. which rather reinforces my point.

i guess i missed the part where she suggested that commercialism reflects poorly on the celebrity.

SockMonkeyHolocaust
fantastic quote.

2003-07-09 12:18:49 PM
Is there a difference between "selling out" and "cashing in"?

Lennon said they "sold out" when they doffed leather and donned suits. But the music got better.

"Cashing in" is what Michael Jackson did with "Revolution."

They want $100 per ticket to see them in Turner Field this weekend. F that!

I really don't have anything else to say, but that a lot of iron to see a band.

2003-07-09 12:21:57 PM
Now that I think about it, the irony is a bit diluted. A music video is essentially an advertisment for an album, CD single, concert tickets, radio play etc. The entire thing is already sold out, so adding a shick razor to it makes it only a little bit more satan-cock-sucky.

2003-07-09 12:25:43 PM
ehhhh....let the chick make some money...at least she can play guitar.

2003-07-09 12:26:18 PM
Jewel has teeth? I never noticed.

On a related note, was there ever a more insufferable song than her "These Hands" tripe? Every time I heard that overly mawkish, self-absorbed, ingratiating, just-a-little-too-earnest piece of shiat, I just wanted to choke a kitten--and not in a good way.

2003-07-09 12:27:39 PM
Jewel isn't a sell out. Unless she publically stated that she only wanted to have moderately well selling albums, and would never alter her style to generate more sales, she isn't a sell out. First, Jewel's first album sold a lot. Second, her previous album features the song Standing Still which was the only hit. She realized the success of Standing Still and copied it. The up tempo songs that equate her to selling out were present long ago.

It seems people mistake selling out with being smart. Just because you are making money doesn't mean you are a sell out. If somebody from Greenpeace does commercials for an SUV, they are a sell out. Jewel isn't. She is just a hottie who decided to use what she had to cash in while expanding her fan base. Sounds like a good idea to me.

2003-07-09 12:28:56 PM
Let it be declared that anyone who bought Jewel's book of "poetry" hereforth renounces any rights to debate her talents, or lack thereof, in this thread.

2003-07-09 12:29:09 PM
Look folks, its not like she is somehow supposed to be some sort of heroic beacon of perfect niceness and some sort of communist morality. She is a freekin "SINGER". She sings songs and makes music. Who cares about the words. She is working and trying to make a living. She gets money for the record sales, etc. and she got money from Schick - SO WHAT???? Why is it somehow wrong to make money. She isn't a philosopher, so don't put too much weight on the stinkin' words to a pop song. If people like the music they buy it and she makes a living. If a company wants to have rights to use the nice pop song, and pay her money, then good for her. There is nothing wrong with making money in a nice and legal manner. What over-intellectual communist - socialist is going to give her a million dollars to use her song?

2003-07-09 12:31:44 PM
so there's a different standard for us, because we need the money? at what point is 'enough'? $200,000? $500,000?

what about stars who have families, and want to know that their kids will never worry about money? (keep in mind the 50% capital gains hit from estate tax) also note how -few- rockstars ever show up on 'richest' lists. the truth is they dont get as much dough as most people assume. particularly if they're not strong in the touring department.

what about stars who want to provide for their extended families? is it wrong to want that 35th million to be able to provide for aunt edna too?

thing is, people get pissed at 'sell-out's because they hold 'artists' to lofty positions, and since they only hear their ideals and rhetoric, and don't see how they actually live their lives, we ass

ume they currently live by their ideals. then fans feel betrayed when it becomes obvious that these lofty concepts that fans attributed to the 'artist' (in a fact vacuum) were shattered by reality.

lemme tell ya, i sure as hell don't live like i think people should live. hell i don't even have as healthy a diet as i think people should have. so why think that other people do? because they have a record contract?

and don't forget to thank sting; now record companies assume that a corporate tie-in for a single is the way to sell an album. he sold his stupid CD nearly entirely on the placement of 'Desert Rose' in that car commercial. Odds are jewel probably didn't have that much to do with the deal, and in the end: she probably didn't bat an eye at the idea.

everything you see, read, and hear - art or not, is a product. if it's 'art', then the 'artist' 'sold out' long before you came in contact with their material.

2003-07-09 12:32:11 PM

To discuss the integrity of anyone who has made millions of dollars in the music industry is like trying to justify the professionalisim of Call Girls.

Plus, does it really matter? I mean, this makes for a nice thread, and nice conversation-- however, how does this effect any of us? Not at all. We get what the record executives think will make us buy albums, and quite frankly, the new poppin' fresh song, the same poppin' fresh boobs, and the adorably imperfect teeth did it for me. Yes, imperfect teeth are kind of cute.

Cowboy hats are stupid. Her boyfriend is not cute. I've always kinda liked her music. Jewel is hot, and by replacing Beyonce's head with my own in my mind, I have created something lovely. Add ashton kutcher, and I've got bliss.

/perverted

2003-07-09 12:33:25 PM
I don't see the big deal - her music was pop crap before and it's pop crap now. Putting bad lyrics to the sound of an acoustic guitar doesn't make you Bob Dylan.

Wow, I didn't realize this was just released. I saw it yesterday on http://launch.yahoo.com (opens in new window, at least, it should).

Pretty funny video. I was kind of dense about what it was trying to do at first. I can't listen to pop "music" without my mind going numb, anymore.

2003-07-09 12:37:43 PM
What I found ironic is that Jewel says she's against commercialism and fakery yet she releases a pop album purely to make money. What the fark?

2003-07-09 12:40:26 PM
Nonetheless, am I the only one having a hard time remembering when Jewel had this integrity? Was it when she was VH-1 pinup-girl, or when she was an Oprah-pandering poet? Now, sure, if Elliot Smith does an ad for an antidepressant, that would be tragic. This is just the truth in music: great tits, honey, what was the name of that song again?
