India, South Africa, China and Saudi Arabia appeared to favour a new possible over-arching inter-government body.

Why am I not surprised at this list...?

Oh we won't officially and openly support the idea. No, what we'll do is is quietly say 'no, wait...stop' and then look the other way while it happens. then they powerz that be shall go and say 'oh woe is us! the UN didist this without our knowledge!' and the unwashed masses will say 'awww...its ok, we understand. well, since its a done deal I guess we have to go along with it...but try to get it fixed right away!' And then the powerz that be will say 'why sure thing! we will get RIGHT on that, you betcha!'

Then nothing will change.

Establishment of such a group has the backing of several countries, spearheaded by Brazil.

You know what other Brazilian wanted control? That's right - General Ernesto Geisel.

"My concern is that if we were to make a move to form a governmental-only body then that would send a very strong signal to civil society that their valuable contribution was not required or was not being looked for," an un-named Australian representative told the meeting."

An Australian standing against government regulation? Am I reading this right?

The UN sees the US as damage and routes around it.

So net neutrality will be defined by communist 3rd world countries. Got it.

Misleading headline is misleading.

From the article:

"representatives from Brazil called for an international body made up of Government representatives that would to attempt to create global standards for policing the internet"

In other words: Brazil wants the UN to come-up with a set of standards, and it is up to each country to decide whether to follow such standards. It is not like the UN wants to police the internet and wants all traffic to go trough their firewall or anything like that.

2010-12-17 11:59:01 AM
So what, UN law would trump ours in cases that applied? how would that even work?

they're more authoritarian than communist these days. that's why so many people in our country identify with 'em these days. we're authoritarian ourselves.

The United Nations is considering whether to set up an inter-governmental working group to harmonise global efforts by policy makers to regulate the internet.

What regulation does the internet need? The internet gets along fine without government oversight, thanks.

unrestricted speech scares authoritarians and corporations alike. hence the push for regulation.

Logic manipulated by fear: the UN is a bunch of total pussies that can't do anything right and never get anything done and fail in everything they do, but they're going to take over everything.

Relax, people.

LasersHurt: Also when did "police" become "control"?

Policing agencies have always been a control mechanism. Now, whether that control is used to enforce statute, or to keep the populace properly subdued, that's a whole other story.

The US wants to do this too. As a matter of fact,

Weaver95: India, South Africa, China and Saudi Arabia appeared to favour a new possible over-arching inter-government body.

Why am I not surprised at this list...?

The reason that India, China, etc. want the UN to do it is because the US has already started and they want it to not be in only our control.

Brazil: let's create global standards for policing the internet, to share resources and ideas on security!
China & Saudi: Great Idea!!
Brazil: you know it's not going to be a "takeover" of the internet where everything you don't like will be censored and people put to death for voicing opinions, right?
China & Saudi: ya, we promise we won't do that!

Can't have it both ways.

They had black helicopters and mind control.
