From what I saw on the news, those $25k chips have an electronic tag on them. So it'll be interesting if they can flag those specific chips and catch the person if he is stupid enough to cash them in.

My first thought. It's really stupid to rob a casino. It's super double stupid to rob a casino of chips.

The 25k chips are gonna be hard to cash in. The $100 ones? not so much.

Given that all the chips have RFID tags in them, and that the casino knows the ID associated with every single chip...

Any Farkers want to suggest how the biker will cash his chips in?
Will he try and sell them at a much lower rate, and thus 'launder' the chips?
Go into the Bellagio and cash-in the chips a few hundred a time? Might take a while. Not sure if profit exceeds the risk of getting caught and having fingers broken.

Way to go. Grab completely worthless chips. Other casinos on the strip may accept smaller denom chips from another casino, but A) They're not going to accept large chips and B) Now no other casino in Vegas will accept a Bellagio chip.

Additionally, any large denom chip transactions at the Bellagio will be verified with surveilance and the pit to make sure that the player really brought those chips from the pit right then and there.

Not really. High dollar chips in casinos are tracked very carefully and have practically no value once they leave the casino. If someone were to walk in to the Bellagio and try to cash in 50k worth of high-dollar chips the casino would verify how many they have on the floor and who won them before they paid out. It's easy to tell when someone is trying to cash stolen or counterfeit chips even if they aren't RFID tagged.

This is why they sell 100k chips for 10 bucks as souvenirs.

Lots43: You can use one casino's chips in another casino? WTH

in LV from casino to casino [in most cases, not all] and in casinos owned by same management company, yes. at least has been my experience.

there are 2-3 different Caesar casinos that I go to across the mid-west and they will take chips from each other.

So if the guy is caught with the chips (not trying to cash them in), would he get jail time consistent with stealing $1.5 million or a few hundred dollars worth of plastic? Or if he is caught trying to cash in x amount of chips in dollars would he get jail time consistent with stealing x amount in dollars, or just the equivalent to the amount of plastic?

That would actually be very easy to unload in the right circles.

What usually happens in this case is if you have a heist of high dollar chips, they change the color of the chips. $25K orange is now purple etc. I'd be surprised if they haven't done it already.

Has anyone mentioned that the typoe of biker referred to in the headline is not the type of biker referred to in the article? Have they also mentioned that the disparity between the two is the source of humor for said headline?

I just wanted to make sure that was mentioned.

You can pass them through many hands in an effort to hide the thief, losing money along the way, but eventually somebody has to show up with a $25,000 chip and try to cash it in. Casinos already have relationships with all the high rollers. They get all the comps and personal visits from the management and are recognized on sight. The occasional high roller has those comp cards. A stranger showing up with $25,000 who is not in the system as having first traded in a comparable amount of cash will get a lot of attention.

Try showing up at a bank to make a $25,000 cash deposit and see what happens. Multiply that by 100 and that's the level of attention a casino will give you if you try to make a large "withdrawl" without having first made a "deposit".

And then there's the old uneasy feeling most of us still have about Vegas. Yes, we've been told time and time again that it's not the 50s and they casinos aren't run by the mob anymore, but... well, they'd still say if it wasn't all true, wouldn't they? A casino sure seems like an awfully convenient way for organized crime to launder millions of cash so I have a hard time believing they all just turned tail and left. So with that in mind, I can't think of a stupider thing in this world than stealing from the mafia.
