I'd still ask for the rifle. Then you can get all the shoes and socks you want by robbing a Foot Locker.

Agreed. Warm clothes are pretty essential if you live in a cold climate. This reminds me a little too much of stories from the Great Depression.

Yeah, my genius Republican brother is getting his 8 year old daughter a rifle for Christmas, so he can "teach her to be safe with a gun." Maybe waiting until she's old enough to fark around with one is a good lesson on being safe. Before the age of 12, gun safety should be "Don't fark with it."

I once read about a poor little French girl who relinquished her Christmas gift so she could buy her mother a Merkin (new window); in order that her mother might use it to hide her diseased venereal infections from tricks and not have to stop working.

that was sadder

I've been very blessed to have some good things happen in my life, even with this recent layoff. While I don't have much money, i donate food/old clothes/what little I can to shelters and programs that help out families that don't even have the little extra that I have.

And let's face it, I'm a 20-something professional who spent his lot in his young life like any other young adult: not thinking very hard about giving to others and saving a lot of money. I have shoes I've since donated because they were worn out to me (and I wore them a few times decided I didn't like them, and was going to get rid of them anyway). I have clothes that I no longer fit or just plain don't wear because I happened to update my wardrobe once or twice. And being the packrat that I am, I surely have other necessities that others can use.

Heck, even if it's a matter of volunteering my time to go down to the soup kitchen and help others, or volunteer for habitat for humanity...being laid off, it gets me off my fat arse and lets me do something productive to help others out.

I may not have much hope for our nation, but I have hope that I can give something better back to other people.

Only if you are a complete failure as a parent. I was shooting my dad's service revolver at 8 (.357 Magnum). Real parents can teach children to be real responsible. This is something liberals hate.

I know a lot of people who have this attitude. The question I have is...why is it that we can have enough people in this country to form a majority that feel this way...and yet no one is willing to get off their lazy backsides and do anything about it -- putting their money where their mouth is, so to speak? After all, if the majority of the people started demanding sanity and real change out of the politicians who have been single-handedly accelerating global warming with all the hot air they spew, and stopped simply voting the idiots back into office, maybe we could really fix some of the problems around here?

Sorta like living in a shiathole of a house and complaining it's a shiathole, and complaining about the shiatty landlords and maintenance staff you have when you could just as easily get off your lazy ass and fix it up yourself.

More than there would be if both parents and children were taught how to be safe with firearms and to treat them with respect and how to use them safely?

Only a jackass would think that by giving them a gun as a present, the gun is just going to be left out laying around as a toy for them to play with whenever. The responsible parent gives them the gift, then promptly locks it in the gun safe so they can't get at it unless they have proper supervision.

Worked for me. I never shot anyone I didn't need to, nor did I blow holes in anything without a legitimate mechanical failure.
