"The doll, named Pulgasari, saves Ami's lover from execution, then joins the peasant rebellion against the land's tyrant."

Sounds like KJI was trying to inject a bit of "workers-revolt-against-the-ruling-class" communist propaganda into the film.

However, he described the progress of communism a little too well:

"But after the tyrant is gone, Pulgasari turns on the peasants."

The Revolution eats its children.

I think the Grammar Nazis will have a coronary over this.

WTF.

I know a bunch of people that work at ADV Films. They love those wierd obscure monster movies over there. But this one takes the cake. I gotta check it out.

What? No DVD release? Bah. Forget it.

awesome review of the movie.

"The movie itself is a fascinating combination of standard monster flick and historial tale of the power of the people. The problematic bit is the fact that, due to North Korea's non-existent resources and infrastructure, the film is incredibly, hilariously poorly executed. That's not to say that they didn't try really hard-- Ken Satsuma, the original actor who played Godzilla, was hired to wear the rubber suit of the monster. Not only that, two of the most popular young actors in South Korea at the time were asked to play the leads. They declined, so they got kidnapped and had to play the leads anyway. "

sounds like A TRUE WINNAR!

Suddenly, Kim il-Jong does not seem so hard to relate to.

The story of Pulgasari is just a metaphor for ANY iron-eating doll that is awakened by a girl's blood, kills a tyrant and is, in turn, destroyed by the girl's self-sacrifice. With a few minor modifications, the story is identical with the movie, "On Golden Pond" (hint: Henry Fonda is Pulgasari)...

Everything was submitted earlier with a better title.

Whiners aren't winners.

I've come to the conclusion that Kim Jong's blood is pure syphilis.
Thats how insane and deranged he is.

The plot of this movie was shamelessly stolen from the second season of Coach. Or maybe it was from Upstairs, Downstairs. Yeah, that's it, it was stolen from Upstairs, Downstairs.

(wgaff)

this story was in time magazine like 6 months ago. guy's a nutcase. the story said he is obsessed with american movies and the los angeles lakers. he also is obsessed with making movies of his own. he has an entourage of cameras everywhere he goes. a few years ago when he met madeline albright, she went to shake his hand and he pulled back...the cameras werent turned on yet.

Any dude that abuses his power as a dictator to kidnap film-makers to create Giant Monster Films is a man of vision.

"Oh great and powerful leader, our people have no food... children are eating cakes of millet husks and wood pulp. The rain has forsaken us for the 3rd year in a row and the rice fields are burned out clay pits inhospitable for life!"

"QUIET YOU FOOL! The fairies sing for Mothra!"

I bet a movie about the making of this movie would be screamingly funny. Make it a cast driven comedy like A Fish Called Wanda, or Best in Show, and it could make MILLIONS...erm... THOUSANDS of Dollars!!!

2003-07-08 07:56:46 PM
Jackie Chan could play Kim Jong Il.

Good site StompTokyo.com, generally sharp reviews and doesn't take itself too seriously.

KJ2: okay, I'm going to lock you in this room until you make a good rubber monster movie.
