Its that thing from that movie that eats people who swim in the water! I think it was creepshow? The group of 'teens' disregard the 'no swiming' sign only to be devoured by the floating mass of sticky stuff. The 'main' guy almost gets away at the end only to have the mass of stuff jump onto the shore and get him.

Didn't this happen a few years ago in about the same part of the world? There was a huge dark patch in the water off the coast of Florida or something. It turned out to be a giant algae colony.
