The image of sumo wrestlers locked in combat serves as a reminder for passengers to stand safely behind the white line when waiting for the train.

Locked in combat? Are you sure that's what they are doing? Cause that's not what it looks like to me :)

These days we really only need one poster: Your mobile phone is not a goddamn bullhorn. NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR GIBBERISH, SO PUT IT AWAY OR THE OTHER PASSENGERS WILL STUFF IT UP YOUR ASS.

What I learned from that site is that the Japanese tend to be forgetful when it comes to their umbrellas.

3 weeks spent in various parts of japan, did not see one person talk on a cell on any train.
all are too busy texting. When a cellphone does ring, they rush to the end of the train to designated spot where talking is allowed. And as they rush to that spot, their facial gestures are apologizing to the other passagers.

we could learn a lot about manners from japan.

Why don't they just gather up all the umbrellas and put them in a box at the front of the subway station, and let people take the lost umbrellas?

Umbrella redistribution.

I'm of the opinion that the use of the word "odd" in describing anything in Japan is redundant.

Three friends at different times have gone to Japan. They've all said the same thing; everyone's drunk and cigarettes are still seventy-five cents a pack. A can of Coke costs about $2 there, as a comparison.

It's covered in all the ones concerning umbrellas; the Sarin was released by puncturing with the sharpened tip of an umbrella newspaper-wrapped packages of liquid Sarin.

I had a flashback to that seeing all the umbrella posters as well.

Aum Shinrikyo are the creepiest cult.
I read Haruki Murakami's book Underground, about the sarin attacks, and teared up reading about how the subway workers tried to clean and mop up the sarin, or kept going back to rescue more people. Several died, and many people were permanently disabled... Most of the thousands of commuters who survived the attacks still have eye damage from the organophosphate exposure.

Yes, no, and no.

-Drunken walks-of-shame home are incredibly common on Fri/Sat nights and not all that uncommon every other night.

-Cigarette prices just jumped here ($1/pack-plus) because of a tax increase. Cigs are now in the $4-5/pack range.

-A can of Coke costs anywhere from $1.25 to $1.50 depending on the vending machine. A bottle will cost you $2.

As far as this train stuff, I wish that Tokyo Metro would get smart and sell these signs as posters/postcards, but they wouldn't know a good publicity strategy if it bit them in the ass. For now I'll settle for that proposed merger between the Tokyo Metro lines and the Toei lines that would make it easy to transfer between them without paying an extra $2 "just because."

They actually have this at my home station; unclaimed and donated umbrellas get tagged and put in a big rack outside the station and anyone can take one when the weather's bad.

However, the Tokyo Metro will hold onto lost umbrellas (and other items) for something like half a year... there was a video story about it on CNN's website somewhere but I'm inbetween classes and don't have time to find it. I still remember the conversation between the reporter and the guy in charge of their lost & found...

Reporter: (in a room that must have had 1000s of umbrellas bundled together) don't you just throw all of these away?
Official: *confused* I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
