boo hoo hoo, an 18 year-old using a bong.

is this really newsworthy?

This country is insane. Put a child in tight, skanky clothes and put her on stage so the dads of the nation can jerk off to her, but don't you DARE suggest she might smoke weed - something that practically everybody does at her age at least once with no significant consequences (other than maybe a funny story to tell at parties).

The worst was the Michael Phelps embarrassment. Apparently bringing two armloads of gold medals back to America from the Beijing Olympics isn't enough to stop the public's scorn if you *GASP* smoke some weed!

She's 18. It says so in the article. Like, the first sentence.

So there is outrage that Miley took a hit from a bong, and not that Bush playing when she was doing it?

This country's priorities are farked.

Hey, everyone, I took a dump today! I might even do it again!

There. Now you don't need to rely on the websites of scum to know the mundane events of my life.

Ok, maybe not "minor" then. Underage for the use of intoxicating agents, like alcohol. At least, that makes the assumption that when pot is finally legal that it's going to follow similar regulations as booze.

I had a friend that was pissed off about that, because he himself is quite the stoner and thought that Phelps incredibly huge lung capacity probably makes him a HUGE bong hog. "Probably sucks that damn thing dry and doesn't leave any for the nextie."

/never smoked it myself

What's the over/under on her first probation violation for leaving rehab early?

I used to want her, but now she's too old and really, who wants Billy Ray's Sloppy Seconds.

As for her career -- I's say the slow sprial is picking up speed...

Salvia my ass. That was just the first legal thing you smoke in a bong that her handlers thought of.

I don't think it had any impact on Phelps' career, do you? Most of the outrage seemed to come from the media.

And she TOTALLY wasn't smoking weed!

I'm not sure how it affected his career, though I haven't seen him in any endorsements (nor have I tried to find any). It was just disrespectful and hypocritical. This country needs to retire the childish notion that weed is somehow bad.

Big couple of weeks for Miley.... First it's nude pics then it's this bong....
Sounds like the same few weeks about a million 18 year old girls had last week.

She didn't do anything wrong, but she did do something stupid. I'm anti-drug, but if you're going to get high in one form or another, don't be retarded enough to do it on camera.

Whiskey Priest: still illegal

Agreed. She should be punished for it, as it's the chance you take when you do something illegal. Just because I think it should be legal doesn't mean that I think people should get off if they get caught while it's still illegal.

But it's still stupid that it's illegal. It doesn't do anything worse to you than a night spent drinking in a smokey bar on Saturday night.

Kelloggs fired him but the other companies he was endorsing kept him on board. How did smoking pot make him a hypocrite? Was he an anti-drug activist? Or is it hypocritical just because he's a tall guy who swims fast?

That I would agree with. In the context of the law as it's written, it's retarded to keep a video record of your illegal activity, regardless of whether the activity should be illegal or not.

I stayed away from weed throughout (undergrad) college because I came from a poor family and depended on FAFSA aid to attend. There is a specific question on the aid application asking if you have been convicted of misdemeanor drug possession. They don't explicitly say it, but if you have to check "yes" you won't get aid. Wasn't about to throw away my only chance at getting a degree for a night of getting high.

No no no. He wasn't disrespectful and hypocritical, the media was disrespectful and hypocritical for crucifying him over it. There's nothing wrong with smoking weed, but apparently (according to the media) his indulging in a harmless recreational drug that the vast majority of Americans have used with no consequences is more important than the fact that he walked into the arena in the Beijing Olympics and beat the living crap out of any and all comers, then came back with enough gold to stock Fort Knox and put us back on the gold standard.

Like anti-all drugs? Like anti ibuprofen, xanax, meth, and cocaine all rolled into one? Caffeine? Why not include that - it's more addictive than marijuana is and a hell of a lot more pervasive in our society.

Truth is, caffeine stands in the service of life in a uber-capitalist society. Marijuana does not. It promotes self-reflection, questioning of authority (particularly since it is currently under a baseless situation of prohibition and criminalization), and relaxation rather than work.

If marijuana made you get up and go to work, wide-eyed and shaking from the over-stimulation (or patentable), you'd better believe that it would be legal. The only reason it WILL be legalized and regulated over the course of the next 10-20 years is because it is a huge moneymaker given how many people smoke it nowadays.

/Just sayin', that's a pretty broad brush you'z painting with.

Kinda thinking that legal salvia might just be worse from a PR standpoint than marijuana. Even though it's legal, kinda sounds scary and everyone I've heard that's tried it says it's bad voodoo

I remembered that someone fired him but had to google which company it was. I ended up reading a Fox News transcript because it had the funniest headline. You know who agrees with you? Bill O'Reilly.

I messed around with some drugs in college (who didn't?). Salvia is some wacky stuff. It's the only drug that's ever given me open eye hallucinations. I definitely freaked out. No real interest to try it again.

/Thank Science it only lasts for a few minutes.

For anyone who hasn't smoked marijuana / salvia, to clarify:

Marijuana makes you feel satisfied and happy. It basically puts you in a good to very good mood. Food tastes better, sex feels better, music sounds about 2-3x times as good as per usual (which is why so many musicians and big music fans toke). If you are an artist, art becomes much more intimate and interesting. I'm a writer and I find that smoking mj usually gives me some fantastic ideas (both fiction and non-fiction articles) and the drive to sit down and start writing. It gives you the best sleep of your life. Personally, I would smoke pot before I took sleeping pills as it's less damaging to your body (particularly if you vaporize the weed) and far less addictive.

Salvia makes you feel like you are completely dissociated from the world you know. Intense hallucinations and disorientation follow suit. Lasts maybe 1-2 minutes. Feels like you just took a blow to the head.

Salvia is legal, marijuana got you ten for two at one time and continues to be a ridiculous bogeyman in our society. This is why the conflation of law with ethics is so dangerous, and why I constantly try to point out the difference to people who frequently conflate or confuse the two.

There's a wide spectrum of reactions; your results may vary. Some people get annoyingly paranoid when they're high.

I just didn't read the article. I assumed pot. Wrong of me without reading the article, I know, but I also didn't care enough to warrant a read. I hear bong, I assume either pot or tobacco. And since they were making a big deal out of it, I assumed pot.

As did many in this thread, incidentally.

I had no idea that she was smoking salvia until you said so. Go figure. Basically, all my fails were result of the original fail of not reading the article.

Most people get annoying loud, stupid, and aggressive when they drink. I personally love drinking and support it's continued legality.

To say nothing of the serious caffeine freaks that Energy Drinks and 3-4 coffees a day have created.

YMMV.

I wasn't making an argument for keeping marijuana illegal. I was just pointing out that your description of a person's reaction to it is subjective, and people shouldn't necessarily expect to feel that way if they smoke it themselves.

Yes I smoked the 'good' shiat.
