It's pageantry for their own people, who were previously totally in the dark about the nobel peace prize this year. A friend of mine working inland in a city the size of Denver said that practically no one even heard it was awarded at all, much less knows to whom it was given.

On the one hand, I'm glad to know China has a viewpoint of peace. On the other, I'm discouraged that it doesn't match anyone else's.
