I can smell the Yankee fans lurking in this thread, waiting to attack anyone that suggests salary parity.

I don't know that it's a written rule, but I know there is at least an unspoken edict from MLB that they don't want the teams "fraternizing" with each other, so as to avoid any perceptions of the games being fixed.....Black Sox scandal relic maybe?

I'm gonna go ahead with a laundry list so everyone can skip the thread:

1) The games take way too long
2) The games are boring to watch on TV
3) The season lasts 162 games, so only the playoffs mean anything
4) Tickets are too expensive
5) People would literally watch any other sport on TV
6) Beers too expensive at the stadium
7) Bud Selig and MLB hate black people
8) George W hates black people
9) Lebron took his talents to South Beach
10) There is minimal revenue sharing
11) There's no salary cap
12) It's still boring

2010-12-08 10:24:24 AM
They don't in the NHL, either. Until the end of a playoff series. Then, just like when they were kids, they form the line and shake hands.

Not seeing what the big deal is about this.

Baseball is fine. It is by far and away the best sport to see live (only exception is maybe hockey) and it is easily the most affordable to see live (in general).

I can understand why joe shcmoe doesn't like to watch it on TV, but I don't think baseball has anything to worry about.

3.09 Players in uniform shall not address or mingle with spectators, nor sit in the stands before, during, or after a game. No manager, coach or player shall address any spectator before or during a game. Players of opposing teams shall not fraternize at any time while in uniform.

Baseball is slow and boring, only mexicans and asians watch it, and almost every year the same teams are always good... maybe for decades. Sure some bottom feeders come up and do good for short periods of time but certain teams will always be THE teams, theres no changing that when there is no salary cap.

< rant mode: ON >

If you find something boring, that's because you're ignorant. It's ok to be ignorant, but your ignorance does not mean the subject is boring; it does mean, however, that your opinion is worthless.

Formula One, opera, NASCAR, football, symphonies, the other football, wine, basketball, beer, baseball, gardening, you name it: If you're ignorant of their details, they'll be boring. Whatever you find interesting, someone else will find boring. If, though, that other person is open-minded enough to learn the subtleties, intricacies and background of your interest, it will cease to be boring.

Why "I find it boring, so it's boring" infects baseball (and Formula One, come to think of it) threads as socially acceptable, and maybe even the majority position, is beyond me. Of course, it does serve as a handy marker of people who find willful ignorance, and opinions built in its vacuum, acceptable.

I find basketball, for example, more boring than watching paint dry (which can be very interesting, come to think of it), but I know that's because I don't care enough to learn more about it. Further, I have no delusion that my opinion on the sport has any merit, as it is fundamentally uninformed.

/ can't wait for Spring, and not just cuz it's only 30* right now

Well, baseball is dying because it has competition since the 1960s. Baseball is the only game in town from the middle of June through August but it can't hang with the start of football season or hockey and basketball playoffs.

When your season is bookended by two generally more popular times in sports, you are in trouble.

You didn't turn rant mode off. I was an avid baseball follower when I was younger. I could watch my team lose 20-0 and still pay attention. As I got older, I realized that baseball is boring. I can still quote you the rules, relevant strategies, and a lot of the players. Baseball is by far the most static team sport popular in the US. That might be due to the way it's televised though.

For example: In football, you can almost always see all 22 of the players on the field. That lets you analyze the formation, pre-snap movement, defensive posturing, and a litany of other adjustments. You can predict what is going to happen and can cheer while multiple players do things at once.

In baseball, you more or less see the ump, batter, catcher, and pitcher at a slightly off straight angle. Since you don't have depth perception, you can only partially judge a ball or strike. You can only assume based on the batter what type of adjustments the fielders might make. Any action after the swing is still centered on the batters box or to one, maybe two, of the fielders. While each player rotates toward their assigned position, you get interaction between at most 3 players. That and the propensity of a lot of players to take upwards of 45 seconds in between pitches is maddening. Football is like that to an extent, but at least you can analyze other aspects of the game while you wait for the snap.

Face, people find baseball boring for good reason. Not everyone might be able to enumerate or explain it very well, but that doesn't mean they are wrong.

Football has problems with camera angles too, though. You almost never get what's going on in the secondary even after the ball is snapped, unless they show a replay. That's why I like when the analysts break out the slow-mo and yellow pen, because it's the only time you get to see how corners and safeties make adjustments and the different kinds of coverage.

The first time I ever went to an NFL game (which was shockingly recent), my seats were behind the end zone and up high. Aside from the freezing cold, it was incredible. So much easier to see what was going on and how the plays were developing. The only problem was when the action was on the other side of the field.

And I just thought of this too. Just because you find something boring doesn't mean you are ignorant on the subject. I played varsity and club volleyball in HS primarily because I was good at it. I played club volleyball in college. I don't enjoy watching it on TV, male or female (beach female excepting), and I don't particularly care for watching it live unless I know many of the people playing. I know more about volleyball than almost anyone watching it and a lot of people who played it (aka the details), and I still find it boring to watch.

Baseball is fine. I don't care if it's not as watched on TV as football. With 162 games, you don't need to maximize attendance and talk as much.

The Rockies had over 3 million people attend a baseball game last year.

Also the cheapest ticket for a game is $4.

The only people who think baseball has a problem are the jizz mopping ESPN types who only understand television ratings.

THIS.

I root for a team that has a habit of missing the playoffs by one game (well, used to). Having to play the yankees 6x a year while everyone else in the division doesnt annoys the shiat out of me.

Couldn't agree more on the DH. If youre going to hit for the pitcher, why not just hit for the catcher too? Theyre putting plenty of strain on their legs while they play defense.

Come to think of it, shortstop is a pretty difficult position to play too. Maybe we can DH for them too. But then again, they dont necessarily field a ball every inning, so only during innings where he made a play.

/Ridiculous.

All of you DH haters out there... aren't we talking about how boring baseball is? Explain how one or two extra hits per game is WORSE for popularity.

If you're a baseball fan who doesn't like the DH, fine. But it certainly doesn't harm attendance or TV ratings to see Jim Thome hitting a ball over a flagpole 390 feet away.

I couldn't agree more. I'd watch (and play) baseball year round, if I could. My 9-year-old nephew just had his season ending baseball tournament last weekend, here in Arizona. I wish I had that option when I was a kid. He'll be a baseball fan and player for life, and I'm happy for that. Baseball doesn't display well on television, (just like hockey) but in person it's magnificent (unlike football). I'm counting the days until pitchers and catchers report.

Butthurt much? I see you're in Kansas. I'm assuming you don't attend the fake UK or Kansas State. That probably means you're a small school or a mid-major in a non-automatic bid conference. If you're worried about losing an at-large bid, it's probably because your conference sucks, your team isn't very good, and is playing a schedule which is too tough. How am I supposed to fix that? The NIT exists for a reason. Good college basketball teams like Duke, Kansas, or even a borderline team like Northwestern or UNC can afford losses here and there. Teams routinely get into the tourney at .500 or slightly better. I can tailor my Fark sports post to obscure, minor conference schools who can't afford to lose 3 non-conference games. If your school is playing in a shiatty conference, you get what you play for.

Baseball is not broken, but it does need a little help.

Dr Dreidel: "People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do: I stare out the window and wait for spring."

That was the quote I was paraphrasing in my original post. I did not however mean to call myself a high school student.

Either way Im an idiot
