Kind of like when I say I like Pop Stars, I DON'T REALLY MEAN IT.

And then we have people like Dick Clark, who never die, retire or really change at all...

encore ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nkr, -kr)
n.

1. A demand by an audience for an additional performance, usually expressed by applause.
2. An additional performance in response to the demand of an audience.

How many times have you been to a concert where 50% of the sonds were played in the encores? And have you ever been to a concert in which encores were played that were demanded by the audience? If the lights stay down, then encores are demanded by the "musicians."

"Musicians", Foo.

$$$$$$$$

It's all about the money

Seriously, Do you know how much cash these acts are raking in for these "farewell" tours. That's why they do it, to get the money out of people.

How many times have you been to a concert where 50% of the sonds were played in the encores?

Um... none.

And have you ever been to a concert in which encores were played that were demanded by the audience?

Yes, many.

I don't know what concerts you've been going to, JPFlathead, but they sound pretty crappy.

Really, what does it matter? It's just marketing. More advertising created to generate more ticket sales. If you like the artist, then you'll go see them. Hell, I just went to see Elvis Costello last night, and it was incredible. If he had been on a 'retirement tour' I wouldn't believe it for a second, cause he's still got the energy and the presence to tour as long as he'd like to.
And if someone is serious about doing 'one last tour for the fans', then they're already too tired to be doing it in the first place, and the tour will almost inevitably suck because their hearts just aren't into it.
It's only advertising, nothing to do with us.

2003-07-06 03:56:32 PM
Just as Michael Jordan has come back for more, and more, musicians from Frank Sinatra to The Who have been loath to give up the spotlight.

Oh-kay... how are either of these artists going to do a comeback tour?

THURSDAY did a true encore here a couple of weeks ago...where they were ready to tear down after a blistering set in the amazing arkansas heat and humidity, but the crowd kept cheering so they came back out and did a couple more songs. those guys kick booty!

Each celebrity is, from their very first hint of public notice, a cash machine. Not only do they provide for themselves, but they are a feeding trough for their posse. No one lets them quit until there's not a chance that anyone will walk across the street to see them. Then, the posse is gone the next day.

Not to mention the massive egos and/or desperately needy psyches of some of these folks. How many signs you do have to see to realize how truly unhappy many celebrities are.

And yet...what's the number one dream of most young musicians? "I want a major label deal."

As Billy Joel said it so well 30 year ago:

"I am the entertainer and I know just where I stand
Another serenader and another long haired band
Today I am your champion, I may have won your hearts,
But I know the game, you'll forget my name,
And I won't be here in another year
If I don't stay on the charts

I am the entertainer and I've had to pay my price
The things I did not know at first I learned by doing twice
But still they come to haunt me, still they want their say
So I've learned to dance with a hand in my pants, I let 'em rub my neck
And I write 'em a check, and they go their merry way

I am the entertainer, been all around the world
I've played all kinds of palaces and laid all kinds of girls
I can't remember faces, I don't remember names
But what the hell, you know it's just as well
'Cause after a while and a thousand miles
It all becomes the same

I am the entertainer, I bring to you my songs
I'd like to spend a day or two but I can't stay that long
I got to meet expenses, I got to stay in line
Got to get those fees to the agencies
And I'd love to stay but there's bills to pay
So I just don't have the time

I am the entertainer, I've come to do my show
You've heard my latest record, it's been on the radio
It took me years to write it, they were the best years of my life
It was a beautiful song but it ran too long
If you're gonna have a hit you gotta make it fit
So they cut it down to 3:05

I am the entertainer, the idol of my age
I make all kinds of money when I go on the stage
You see me in the papers, I've been in the magazines
But if I go cold, I won't get sold
I get put in the back in the discount rack
Like another can of beans

I am the entertainer and I know just where I stand
Another serenader and another long haired band
Today I am your champion, I may have won your hearts,
But I know the game, you'll forget my name,
I won't be here in another year
If I don't stay on the charts"

Since when has Kiss been considered "pop"?

2003-07-06 04:25:40 PM
schmack,
Billy Joel's pop radio hits aren't that good, you're right. However, his stuff that never gets airplay kicks ass. Listen to All For Leyna, Captain Jack, Laura, or The Stranger.

2003-07-06 04:27:45 PM
Nobody beats Kiss at making their fans buy useless crap.

2003-07-06 04:29:11 PM
Simmons, 53, has plenty of outside interests, from his lad magazine Gene Simmons Tongue to Sex Money Kiss, his new, bloviating self-help memoir.

I bet it was bloviating and suckviating.

I also bet that all his "outside" interests revolve around drawing attention to himself.

He should retire gracefully, like his brother Richard.

Somehow, I suspect you're a Butthole Surfers fan.

Billy Joel may not be your cup of tea, but he's demonstrated a wide range of styles and a lot of staying power over the years, and had the class to announce years ago that he was retiring from recording new pop albums...and stuck with it. And before you decided to attack his value as an artist, that was sort of the point of the thread.

2003-07-06 05:00:28 PM
I have to agree with Gene Simmons on this one. I'm not a fan of KISS, but c'mon - the people KNOW you're not going away, so make the money when you can. Same goes with "selling out" - if you can make money by licensing freakin' condoms a la Gene, go for it. Anything goes.

That said, Cher is an embarrassment to human life and 58 different kinds of plastic.

Later.

It's false advertising. A "farewell performance" means BY GOD they'd better retire, or I'm seeking compensation.

*Sniff*

Ah, the scent of class-action.

And before you decided to attack his value as an artist, that was sort of the point of the thread.

Translation: Those of you who are non-gay may not like B.J., but he spent two decades sucking on the ass-end of every musical cliche known to man, his "people" paid out tons of cash to make sure he was rammed down everyone's throat for, and then when he got too bloated and gray-haired to be a viable whore anymore, he had the "class" to withdraw and become a "full-time classical composer," as if that description hadn't lost all possible meaning 100 years ago.

Boo-hoo, I attacked your favorite pop whore's "value as an artist." At least I didnt waste precious moments of my life, and space in this thread, transcribing every word in one of his ass-tastic songs.

The alliance between Simmons' tongue and Steven Tyler's lips is selling briskly,

Yuck, I'm pretty sure no one is going to pay to see THAT...

I feel bad dreams coming over that visual.

I've seen The Who's 3rd and 4th Farewell Tours.

Life is unfair.

Example: Alexa Joel - her mom is Christie Brinkley, and she winds up looking like her dad.

'I saw the Rolling Stones in the Astrodome
during their farewell-tour in 1982'

A. The Stones played the Astrodome in 81

B. They have NEVER ever advertised one of tours as a 'farewell' tour...they dont NEED to! Both Mick n' Keef have fairly forthight on this subject, claiming that they never WILL advertise a tour/show as such...withOUT it being the Real deal...

2003-07-06 07:28:20 PM
Could that article be anymore boring? Obvious indeed. I would just like to place a request here. Please make the Rolling Stones never EVER tour again. Thank you.

(ahem) Barbra Steisand sucked her fans dry by charging over grand for seats for her tour.

Celine Deon who was gone now has a huge megabucks vegas show where she is making loads of cash.

Example: Alexa Joel - her mom is Christie Brinkley, and she winds up looking like her dad.
Well it is not so bad she at least has his talent. she plays
piano too.

Just wanted to chime in way too late that it's a shame that the current Dismemberment Plan tour is their last. Dammit. And the Replacements have yet to re-unite either, so any other reunions should be put on hold.

Hello? This on?

2003-07-07 10:12:12 AM
I saw The Who's farewell tour in 1978.
