This is one of the fundamental laws of the Universe. Why are people still surprised by this?

The Universal Law of Employment/Compensation works as follows:

Attractive People > Normies > Ugmos > People with Visible Tattoos > People with Dumb Names

It's not in the slightest bit fair, but that's how it works!

...like the woman who asked me why she was having such a terrible time meeting men, while dressed in a way that advertised not 'I want a boyfriend!' but 'I'm just the girl to clean out your sewer line!'

Well, regardless of SO status, everybody needs to clean the pipes once in a while.

Depends how tall. Just "tall" would probably put them on the same level as the attractive people. Freakishly tall would lower that ranking.

I will now find an excuse to use the word ugmos out loud in a sentence today.

Catherine Hakim, a senior research fellow in sociology at the London School of Economics, not only opposes anti-discrimination laws based on looks, but believes the advantages people get from being attractive should be celebrated and counted as an economic asset.

When I explain to my wife why I do research on growing taller after bone plates have closed (I'm 28, male, and 5' 6"), this is what I explain. Society is superficial. Luckily, stem cell research should have this tied up for me in another couple years, but I'll be passed my prime earning years anyway.

My husband is gorgeous. He gets no breaks. Seriously.

Better looking people are natural leaders because they hold a higher social status than they otherwise would. I'm not saying it's right, but I think it is actually a valuable asset in many jobs. Also, many positions require you to "be able to maintain a professional appearance." What is that, if not at least semi-attractive?

2010-12-06 06:41:33 PM
I disagree.. I'm better looking that the other people on my sales management team and they make around the same as me. Perhaps when you're talking about low salaried positions but when it comes to large numbers people want to hire a person who can execute to the business plan.

I'll hire an ugly woman that can post big numbers before I hire a hottie who's only attribute is being hot. The amount my employees make directly affects my personal income.

My secretary (admin or whatever they are calling themselves these days) though.. She's farking hot. Her husband is a friend of mine though so I can't tap it. Also something about business ethics and my GF or whatever.

Attractive people are paid better because the average Farker is unemployed and trying to argue that sweatpants count when his mom asks if he's bothered to get dressed today.

2010-12-06 06:52:22 PM
Or conversely, higher paid people have the option of working less and can afford to use time exercising and can spend more on healthy food (avoiding the cheap processed foods).

Ok, but is he smarter than a toadstool?

I mean looks have a helluva lot to do with success, but beauty can only go so far in making up for stupid.

It gets even worse if you're not comparing people who do the same job.

Examples:

Athletes get paid more than coaches.

Models get paid more than seamstresses.

Television stars get paid more than writers (although there are usually a lot more writers).

Top hookers may well get a bigger cut than their pimp.

In a comedy duo, the straight man traditionally gets 40% and the funny man gets 60%.

This shows the importance of good controls in a scientific study. Because if you are comparing the income of porn stars to the income of gaffers, you are going to get some really twisted results.

2010-12-06 07:06:13 PM
Attractive people get breaks. Intelligent people get breaks. Athletic people get breaks. Minorities get breaks. Majorities get breaks. Blah blah blah blah blah

/wait, surely there should be a category that gives me some breaks?

2010-12-06 07:07:48 PM
Just don't be fat. I can't respect anyone that's fat. If you my equal or subordinate, I'm probably going to overlook you. If you're my superior, I'll do everything I can to circumvent you. You might win if you're tough, but it's probably easier for both of us to just not be fat.

He's no dummy, but he didn't go to college either. He started in air conditioning, then moved to IT and is now in the process of changing careers to become a programmer. He's slowly putting a game together for me as an app on the iPhone. He's following everything and is teaching himself so much. But, his looks have never done anything for him. Maybe some people resent him. I don't know.

2010-12-06 07:11:19 PM
Pretty sure my looks are at least 3/4 of my professional success.

Other 1/4 is my massive ego.

2010-12-06 07:12:19 PM
Yea. I quickly learned the world wasn't the politically correct bullshiat that they tried to feed us in school.

Lose weight, clean daily, learn basic fashion, spend money on good clothing, go to a dentist, get your hair cut/styled monthly, drop your local accent, and if you want to go for broke .... get an education.

I almost find it humorous to visit public schools. These kids need to learn what they need to survive in this new, more cut-throat world. Give me a class of Seniors at any high school and I could make them 100x readier for the real-world then those kids who are sleeping in study hall.

I'm thankful to be a honky and not ugly. These physical attributes have helped my salary. So has the fact that I have a full head of hair.

My wife is a bit better looking than I am, and according to this immutable fact, has a higher salary.

In a semi-serious vein of curiosity...why are so many poor people ugly?

Ha! I can guarantee that he's better off than if he'd been ugly. A problem with rich/successful/smart/attractive/tall/lucky people is that they get so used to the advantages of their particular strengths, they learn to assume that their experiences are normal, and don't think that they are 'advantaged' at all.

Actually, I've had my share of success, considering my age. I've had to work hard for it, though, because I have little in common with the baby boomers and their kids/friends/relatives they hire around here.

2010-12-06 07:38:05 PM
I've always opperated on the assumtion that
I'm moderately attractive and I can barely pay my bills.

I suspect my good looks may have worked against me in a few hiring situations where I was easily the most attractive person in the room and I may have been viewed as a threat.

I know for a fact that we don't hire attractive girls at my current job because the hiring manager is the wife of the CEO and he's a notorious creeper. Every time I go downstairs and see the boss's wife talking to a fat ugmo I know I'm meeting a new coworker.

No joke, happened 3 times in the past month.

I miss having attractive coworkers.

Probably a mixture of their ability to afford to look nice and bad looks have destroyed their self-confidence.

Our former HR director had a thing for tall hot burnetts.
he has moved on, but his legacy remains.
I don't care if they make more than the short less hot folks.
I don't even care if they make more than me.

Seeing them wandering the halls makes my day better.

Nice.

I work with nothing but personal trainers, health educators, nurses, etc. It's like working with all models. And this company is currently employing the youngest set of people I've ever worked with also. The oldest person here is in their late-30's.

Company parties are the best because you see a bunch of really healthy people pig out on booze, cigarettes, greasy food, and other non-healthy things.

"It is weird [beautiful-female-coworker] that your computer account keeps locking itself. I guess we'll just have to sit and chat awhile while I 'fix' the problem. Oh you like to drink occasionally!? So do I! *Ha ha ha* We have so much in common...."
