yeah! what a wacky hostory. So wacky that we don't have to look at our own really wacky histories one bit. There's nothing to see there....

Multicultural ?, I guess we are kind of, but at the same time we can't stand foreigners.

British people are the biggest cultural snobs I've ever met. They'll straight up tell you that your country has no culture and that they were busy running the world when your country was in diapers. Kind of endearing really though, its better than all that French mamby-pamby 'all cultures are equal' crap that I hear so often.

I remember talking to a lot of Brits in Australia who complained about the lack of culture and history in oz and how Australia is technically still part of the British empire.

If we are talking about Britain and America then how is that inaccurate ?

It seems like all Australians visit the homeland at least once, witness the amount of Australian barmen in London.

Considering that the British are nothing but mongrels of the various Celtic, Roman, German and Viking conquerers of that dreary little island, they have nothing to crow about themselves.

Well, using that logic only single celled organisms from several billion years ago have something to "crow" about themselves.

Speaking as a Brit, there are some right wankers out there who do go around saying 'oh well, the colonies are a bit crap aren't they', but most Brits think they're wankers and an embarassment.

That said, with the cultural superiority thing, I do find it hard to drum up enthusiasm for 'Milwaukee's oldest water tower' and other lame historal artifacts. I seems that if something survives more than 100 years in the US it's special. My local pub first opened in 1549, so I find this attitude a little daft. Sorry.

And so back to the Germans:
Is it true that each & every village of more than 30 people has to have it's own brewery?
How come there are cigarette machines on the streets?
So even if your doing 240 kph somebody will overtake you like your standing still? And you can get a bottle of JD with your unleaded, all night!?

We need to know.

The reason they end up in bars is because the live in positions make it viable to stay in london without paying 1000 per month in rent

British people are the biggest cultural snobs I've ever met. They'll straight up tell you that your country has no culture and that they were busy running the world when your country was in diapers.

As an American I can only say one thing to the Brits about this... they're right. They have a right to say that. End of discussion. That's why we love them to death. They're a tough, civilized people.

Why do you think the US has such tight friendship with the UK? They are the polite, pint-sized population powerhouse. The only real difference is the number of boots. If they were our size, they'd be trying to stick it to us right now in foreign trade... we'd be chasing their coattails. We'd be sucking up to them.

Sorry, other nations. The UK is our friend. You really should have shut up and respected her instead of making jealous remarks. To quote a king a long time ago, "When the 20th Century begins I predict that there will only be five kings left... the king of hearts, the king of spades, the king of diamonds, the king of clubs, and the King of England." Not a bad prediction at all. Off, but it makes a point.

Complaining about Britain? Look at your own country. They're just fine.

This was taken in Leipzig, Germany a few years ago, it wasn't even a special occasion, just a bunch of neo-nazis feeling proud on a random tuesday in central Germany, but that's ok, Germans make great beer...

2003-07-06 02:51:54 PM
th3j0k3r: I was under the impression that Nazism was basicaly banned in germany. Selling Mine Kampf, for example, will get you thrown in jail.

2003-07-06 03:11:50 PM
It is correct that anything promoting the Nazi party is illegal.

Germany even did away with their version of the boy scouts, because it was too similar to the Jungvolke.

2003-07-06 03:15:22 PM
It still doesn't mean the sentiment is gone though. A small contingent still supports Nazi ideals, just as a small contingent in America supports Ku Klux Klan ideals.

Eighty-one percent of young Germans could recall at least one famous Briton - with pop singer Robbie Williams, the late Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II being most well-known.

Somehow these aren't the first people who come to mind when I think of famous English folk, or even famous English musicians. Okay, so the Queen isn't too bad, but to me, this old pop act called The Beatles is a bit easier to recall than Robbie Williams. And if dead people are allowed to be named, then I'd take Newton, Darwin, and Shakespeare over pretty much everybody else.

I am a Californian living in Germany for over 1 year, I will do my best...

Is it true that each & every village of more than 30 people has to have it's own brewery?

Does not HAVE to, but if someone wants to open one even in a town of 30, why not? ;)

How come there are cigarette machines on the streets?

So that people can buy cigarettes whenever they need and not have to drive to a gas station or someone, just walk down the street. Why is it so terrible to have them on the streets? Also it is worth noting, that cigarettes cost normally 3 per pack anywhere, whether from machine, the store or wherever.

So even if your doing 240 kph somebody will overtake you like your standing still? And you can get a bottle of JD with your unleaded, all night!?

Yes, there are really some people who will do 240 or more, but only if the autobahn is really empty. Otherwise you will end up just killing yourself when someone jumps out in front of you. And with JD, I am not sure, but I do not think it would be a problem.

Hope that helps!

TBH I only asked as they're some of my favourite memories, I used to work for a bunch of Bavarians, (Very Nice ppl).

Every time they flew me out to Munich we nearly always did 240+ on the autobahn in some company Merc D > or BMW 5+. They always lent me the same stuff for commute/personal use too. We often made the 38km to Munchen airport in <20mins!

All the towns had a brewery, even the suburbs of Vilsbiburgh. I liked having the opportunity to get some smokes every 20mtrs too. Although we UK network ppl did out drink the programming dept once, (it wasn't easy).

If it was up to me I'd swap the UK Queen for the pres of Bavaria anyday. The head office sold local brewed beer and others in the canteen to the 06:00 shift onwards, with full flexi-time, nice!

They also had a 6m bar & 2 lane bowling ally under the accounting dpt ffs! It really seemed a way of life to 'em, & they still made the best cars in the world, whilst drunk.

It says a lot about attitude? But they don't know shiat about bacon or sausages.

I checked the link of that picture: http://www.das-fotoarchiv.com/angebote/neonazi/d_nazi.htm .

This is written under the picture: "1. Mai 1998 in Leipzig. Demonstrationszug der NPD ... "
In english: "May 01, 1998 in Leipzig. Protest march of the NPD ..."

May 1. is not "a random tuesday" in germany it is a national holiday and there are traditionally lots of demonstration and protests on that day. And it's not just a "bunch of neo-nazis" it's a political party (NPD=Nationaldemocratic Party Germany) having a protest march, which is (unfortunately?) their right to do as this is a free and democratic country.

Munich is very nice. Unfortunately I have not had an opportunity to spend much time there. I really enjoy the fast driving. And people actually move out of your way! That is the shocking thing. :) Just a few light taps on the high beams for the silly people, and really they move out of the way. Sweet. :)

The company I work for does not sound as laid-back as yours, but it is still nice. At least plenty of paid vacation time, and every year a company trip somewhere in Europe.

Now I just have to convince my parents to make the 13 hour flight to visit me here so I can show them around. ;)

If you get the chance, do drive as south as possible, they're some of the nicest folks I've ever met, & strangely all of them. Castle Neuschwanstein is excellent.

I don't work for them no more, I actually found a more laid back environment! (No kidding). Althougth the pay is 1/2, I only have to work 1/2 the week, but spend the rest in a pub.

The Bavarians always said that they're "Not Germans!" Pointedly so too. All the ppl I asked in Bavaria regarding speeding said that the police don't care as long as the distance between cars is big enough, it seems rather sensible.

My I.T. Gruppenfuehrer took >12 weeks paid holiday pa.! All due to flexi-time though. He spent 12 hours a day at work for 2.75 weeks a month. & then had 12 weeks off. (You could never email him, ever. He was never there.

We also noticed that a bottle of JD in the nearest garage was 10 Euro's, they're ~18 UKP here =(

Thanks for the advice. I found every in Germany really helpful. I live in Siegen, which is between Frankfurt and Koeln, and I really everyone has been so nice and helpful. I mean, I even know my neighbors. We have nice little parties every once in a while. I did some work in Munich, at a power plant there, and also the people there were really nice. I just had trouble with the Bayern accent. Hehe. But it was pretty, and I would like to go back.

Yes, long holidays are really common. At my work I am not possible to take 12 weeks, this is a bit much, but also some long holidays. We even have a few company trips, where we work for a few days, then have vacation there for 2x as long. Last we were in Vienna, that was really great. Really beautiful.

And I normally do not drink JD, so I did not know that. I live the bier here very much, but I cannot drink so much as the Germans. I asked a co-worker how he could drink so much, and he simply said, "practice". Hehe.

And you are also right about the castles, wow. It seems about every city has a brewery AND a castle. :) Siegen has 2! And I have heard of Neuschwanstein, but have not had the opportunity. But as soon as I can, I would love to see it.

Take care and lots of fun in the pub! I go to bed now! (00:08 here)

How long will you be in Hamburg? It's a great city; I've been there about 4 times. In fact, a good friend of mine from Hamburg is coming to visit me in a couple weeks! (I live about 5 hrs away by car, which, for Germany, is pretty damn far, so I'll shut up now...)

Viel Spass!

Btw, funny that nobody has mentioned the whole thing, however stupid, with tourists reserving beach chairs with their towels... ;-)

Culture? What's the big freakin' deal about culture? Much over hyped by those who claim to have it. German beer on the other hand farking rocks!

2003-07-06 10:55:23 PM
I love Britain and Germany...both for beer and culture. Munich/southern Germany rocks; I've never been to the north of the country though. Ahhh, but the beer....

2003-07-06 11:32:22 PM
speaking as someone whos lived in the north and in the south, the south has better beer. period.

the south they drink helles (lagers), dunkles , all the different sorts of weissbier (light, dark, kristall,) plus all thes obscure beers only found down there, like the rauchbier in bamberg that tastes like smokey sausage in beerform...

and in thenorth? they drink...pils. thats it. the dryer and more bitter the better, just like their blakchearted prostant joy hating souls. heh.

the golden nectar of the world is augustiner in munich. there is not a better beer.

additionally, the brits are a great people. they need to realize their not the be all end all they once were because the people who shouldve led the nation to gretness in the 20th century all died on the somme.

that being said, the english have given the world their language and their institutions, and for that, the world should for always be grateful, in much the same way americans shouldnt forget the debt our socitey owes the french and stop this whole frogbashing "ooh the french smell" bullsht.

europe is our heritage, we should love it as such.
