When my buddy was 14, in 1997, this movie made him realize his dream. What he wanted to do with his life aside from being a kid on a farm in Park City, MT.

He wanted to move to Scotland and become a punk rock heroin junkie. Although he is something of a local legend in the punk scene, he never got to Scotland and scored a 'ding of heaven'.

He did, however, smoke opium and instantly realize he was allergic to them, though...

Umm, more likely it'll be much like the sequel to the book: Porno

Count me in with the 'Trainspotting was great so eat my ass subby' crowd. And if I remember correctly Irving Welsh did write a sequel to the novel Trainspotting titled "Porno". So this isn't just some hollywood nonsense.

2010-12-04 03:41:24 PM
I don't know about this. On one hand it would be great to see the aged characters, but on the other hand Porno wasn't nearly as good as Trainspotting so I wouldn't want them to ruin the classic original.

Then again, they have been talking about doing this sequal for years and years.

Part of putting up a successful troll is at least to make the premise of your intentionally misleading headline believable.

Trainspotting is a great movie.

Unless, of course, you were one of the American audiences that actually needed subtitles to understand Scottish people speaking English?

Go out and get or download 'Trainspotting' right now and watch it. This thread should still be going for a couple hours. We'll wait for you.

//Besides, what else are you going to do on a Saturday afternoon that is so important?

Question for the Trainspotting fanboys/girls...since when did "not that great" equate to "bad"?

Oh you trolled me so good with the headline Subby.

That said, not excited for Trainspotting 2, not excited at all, mostly because Porno was awful. But I didn't love Trainspotting the book either, so maybe Danny Boyle can make something good happen.

2010-12-04 04:46:49 PM
I thought Trainspotting was a very entertaining film... I'd go see the sequel if it were well-done.

Danny Boyle doesn't NEED to make this film. Ever since Slumdog Millionaire was a huge worldwide success, he can pretty much pick any project he wants. So, hopefully, this means that he can do this without compromising on quality and make it a worthy sequel.

Sunshine was 3/4 of an absolutely awesome movie.

It's that last fourth with the abrupt change of focus that kinda soured things for me.

I see this a lot with writers I work with. At some point they go "this is getting really hard to tie this all together so fark narrative arc I give up here's the ending".

Which was a shame.

I wanted more than a rehash of that other space movie, which I won't name here for spoilerrific purposes.

I've tried to watch it 3 times and haven't been able to sit all the way through it once. To me it's the Emperor's New Clothes. If it makes me unhip to say I didn't like it, the unhip I will be.

God, I loved that movie. The book was shiate, especially since it was written in Scots. And not just the dialogue. The whole damn thing.

I didn't dislike Porno, but I don't remember it enough to really judge it. I just remember Diane was back, and that was pretty awesome.

rynthetyn: What? There were actually people who needed subtitles to understand a movie that's in English?

I've noticed it twice on network television with subtitles. They even subtitle the Japanese iron chef on the American version of the show even though you can perfectly tell what he is saying.

/fark'n great movie
//at the very least it gave us Ewan McGregor

It took me half the book to be able to read it without tripping over the dialect. It was then I realized it was a shiat book.

Porno is mostly the adventures of some posh English student chick who ends up making porn for Sick Boy because she gets bored of her day job, giving guys happy endings at a massage parlour.

Also, there's a lot of cocaine.
Basically every sentence of the book could read "Sick Boy is a douchebag" and you'd get the same effect as reading it.

I thought writing Diane back into the story felt kind of forced. Also, not sure how I felt about the ending with Begbie. It has been years since I last read it.

Like all of Danny Boyle's movies Trainspotting was a good film.

2010-12-04 06:01:48 PM
I beg to differ with subby; Trainspotting was exactly all that great. It wasn't the best film of the year, nor was it the crowning achievement of off-stream British cinema (which could well be Wicker Man), but it was a great film, well acted and deftly paced. Bits were slow and bits were creepy, and every bit resonated with the on-screen action.

And this news could be a damn sight worse-- Boyle could be cobbling together a sequel to Shallow Grave. Another fine film, but one that left precious little room for a sequel.

2010-12-04 06:03:25 PM
Trainspotting was not bad, but maybe true accurate and dismal. The senseless violence, drug use, and death stays with you. It does it's job as the director intended.

2010-12-04 06:26:13 PM
The novels were great, though when I finished them, my thoughts were in Scot slang dialogue. Does Porno need to be made? No. Was Trainspotting awesome? I really enjoyed it, and learned that I don't ever never want to do heroin. The baby on the ceiling was crazy...and summed up withdrawl perfectly.
