It should be called a Fark Pity Party for anyone who lives in or near Cleveland.

/Ohio rant on

I agree with the Pity Party comment. I lived four miserable years in that godforsaken hellhole.

Ohio - and especially Cleveland and the surrounding North East portion of Ohio closest to the Pennsylvania border - is a steaming cesspit of nothingness. Jacobs Field and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are the only upsides for that entire area. Oh, and don't even try to argue that the Flats are still a fun place to go to. Years ago, it was already starting to decline into a seedy riverside crime haven.

They should pave the entire state, so people who live in Pittsburgh or Chicago can park-and-ride.

Other places in Ohio you'll never even want to drive through, let alone consider visitng:

Youngstown. Dismal, crime ridden, smells awful, nothing to do socially, nothing to do professionally. "Downtown" reminds me of an old fashioned western ghost town. Great place to score drugs or end up in a gang crossfire. Dark and brooding Nirvana cover bands were all the rage last time I was there and went out to a bar. In 1997.

Akron. There is no highway department there, especially during winter months. When a friend told me the whole town smells like a burning tire, I thought he was joking because it's got the big Goodyear plant in it. He wasn't joking. If you decide to head there looking for a nightlife you'll smell it plenty during your futile wandering.

Cedar Point. Great fun - if you don't mind 95 degree weather with 98% humidity while you stand 4 hours in line for any of their rides. Last time I was there the bathrooms overflowed, spreading a slimy layer of human waste in a bunch of the queueing areas.

Ravenna, Garrettsville, Brimfield, Twinsburg, Warren, Niles, etc. All these tiny no nothing villages and mini towns are crawling with farmers, Amish, unemployment, bad roads, unplowed snow, tornadoes, rednecks, drunken drivers, and a heavy sense of desperation.

Wow, Decker... You sure have your angst on.

As a member of the North-East Ohio brigade for the past 14 years, I must soundly refute your claim that "Cleveland and the surrounding North East portion of Ohio closest to the Pennsylvania border - is a steaming cesspit of nothingness."

Pure drivel, that.

You must be rather culturally uninclined. The arts are wonderful (The Cleveland Museum of Art, Playhouse Square, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, numerous heritage based activities -and from the Irish point of view, the town is booming as it hasn't in a long time in that regard, etc)

The Flats are a useless waste of time, I will agree with you on that account. Also, Akron- not my favourite place to visit.

*However*, it is a pity that your time in Ohio left you so scarred. Perhaps you might consider therapy? I've heard it can be quite helpful in these situations :-)

(and yes, that last bit was said in jest- though I figure that anyone who is so adamant in their negative declarations ought to consider precisely *why* they feel that way... Not that it's any of my business!)

I think he just spent too much time in Traficantville Youngstown. If I spent any length of time over there I'd probably go batty as well. :D
2003-07-05 07:37:19 AM
I have had the distinct pleasure of never having to visit there. It is pretty funny hearing some of the stuff that Mr Traficant has to say, though...

Perhaps not much of an asset to Ohio as a whole.

I digress. Perhaps Pennsylvania would be interested in annexing the glorious place that is Youngstown?

It's actually not bad here in cleveland.
Of course, I may be retarded.

Actually, it's just too goddamn early to be awake right now.

whens the UK fark party?
2003-07-05 10:54:34 AM
Megumi136, you're a doll. As a Clevelander, I concur.

Decker, it's funny...I bring my college buddies who have been living in Manhattan since college (going on 8 years) to Cleveland. They all love it. One even asking me to "find [him] a nice Midwestern gal" after retrieving his jaw agape caused by the gals on West 6th.

And, for the most part, blacks and whites get along here well. Not true of many other large cities.

Decker, by your whining and being of the male persuasion I presume, this Clevelander surmises you're a total pussy. See your scrawny ass at the party. - HB

Being born in youngstown, going to college here, and some how still being here, i will have to agree. YOMPTON SUCKS
2003-07-05 11:25:51 AM
Everybody just shut up and give me some peace and quiet. We are in the middle of our two perfect weeks of summer. Please continue the biatchfest once it starts raining again.

/Gotta "love" Cleveland weather.

Ohio - and especially Cleveland and the surrounding North East portion of Ohio closest to the Pennsylvania border - is a steaming cesspit of nothingness.

Especially Cleveland? That's ridiculous. I mean, have you seen the rest of the state? Cleveland is where it's at, comparatively.

But maybe I'm crazy, since I actually like it here.

Anybody want to hit the Phantasy tonight? My friend's band is playing.
2003-07-05 12:23:38 PM
Its just not Cleveland, its all of America

The big amusement parks are getting bigger.

The small ones are dying out from the inability to afford liability cases!

Without anything fun to do, kids do drugs.

I see it in my area around Pittsburgh. Things are rapidly getting worse. We have lots of houses and nothing to do.
2003-07-05 12:53:34 PM
Cleveland sucks. Pittsburgh forever.

One time I went to Pittsburgh and they closed the highway behind me. I've never quite forgiven them for that.

Cleveland has many ups and downs - much like any other US city. I'm proud to say i'm from there and i'm glad I got the FUK out while the gettin' was good.
2003-07-05 03:44:38 PM
I went on a business trip to Cleveland once. At least I thought I was going to Cleveland when I agreed to go. When the plane landed in Cleveland I found out that I was in trouble. I had to walk onto the runway and climb a ladder onto an airplane with propellers. This POS of a plane took me to somewhere called Toledo. Luckily my hotel in Toledo had a bar. I ordered a screwdriver there and the bartender said "a screwdriver? that's tequila and orange juice right?". Uh, no. Unfortunately I could only enjoy one night in Toledo. The next day I was driven to another place called Defiance, where people apparently eat fried chicken gizzards, drink all day, and live in a van down by the river. I sure was glad I got to spend a whole week in Defiance!

Ohio-wise, I've always been a fan of Columbus. Just got back from Comfest last weekend, had a blast. The city is actually really nice and clean this time of year (No OSU students) I would say it's getting better there then it is up in cleveland.
2003-07-05 03:56:00 PM
I missed out on Comfest as I am one of those OSU students that is back home for the summer...

Columbus is a cool town, at that.

decker12: Ohio got a lot better after you left. I'm not saying it's cause and effect or anything, but...

My excuse: I grew up here (born and raised in Ravenna, how do you know of that pothole-posing-as-city?), so for me this is "normal". You can imagine my joy whenever I travel.

Anywhere :)

I'm pissed off that I'm going to be out of town and won't be able to attend. :/
2003-07-06 12:29:59 AM
Unfortunately, I will be out of town with Froggy.

Fortunately, we will be blowing things up in northern michigan since we couldn't do it for the 4th.

So far I've managed to miss both cedar point fark trips and now a cleveland party, but I was at farkaraoke 2002 and some of the first fark gatherings, so I'll deal.

I actually kinda like living in Cleveland. It's better than the cornfields of Darke County, OH (which is near IN).

Anyways, I'd like to relay my Trafficant story. I work in the Key Tower (tallest bldg in Cleveland, on Public Square), and I normally park over by the Gund, which is about 10 blocks away. One morning, as I was making my way to work, I noticed a ton of those news vans, and I was thinking, what the hell's going on? Strike? Naty City bought Key? I didn't know. It was Trafficant and he was standing on the steps of the Federal Courthouse (which has since moved. But I was about 200 feet away, and I could still see his crazy fake wig. It was kind of traumatic, because it was so big. But I got over it, and now I have this little story to relay.
2003-07-06 11:51:22 AM
Not to actually post something *gasp* ON TOPIC or anything... heh... but... Madame.M and I might come up for this provided we can find somewhere to stay cheap.
2003-07-06 01:58:12 PM
Ahhh crap. Figures. If I wasn't leaving for military duty, I'd offer up my condo for anyone to stay at.

I think I'm 0-3 on Fark meetups.

Maybe next time....

Mike, There is a Baymont inn right across mayfield road. I stayed there a few weeks when I got transfered to Cleveland a few years ago. Its clean and pretty decent and I was paying around 40 bucks a night. However, that was several years ago and I got a good rate for multiple nights.

A quick look in the phone book tells me the number is 440-442-8400 if you want to check it out. I would offer you a place at my house but I could not guarentee your safety, given how my wife feels about all the time I waste on FARK.
