There was no claim of responsibility in the bomb attack, but Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed blamed "sectarian elements," an apparent reference to outlawed extremist groups of the Sunni Muslim majority, suspected in most of the previous attacks.

I wouldn't think that anyone in that part of the world would want the title of "Information Minister" these days.

The disagreement?

They argued over who farted.

Whatever you do, don't mention the 7th century Islaamic schism. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.

I think more than "dozens" have been killed over that "disagreement" since the 7th century.

As long as they're killing each other instead of someone important(an American), all the better.

The disagreement? Who should be Mohammed's successor. Half said his son. The other said his uncle. Unless it was his daughter. I can't remember.

It would be like having a sect of Christianity that worshipped Paul and not Jesus because he really did all the work.

Sort of.

Which is which? Is there anyone who could give us a 60-second lecture (or link)? And where do the Sufi's fit in?

Of course. They have a disagreement over something that happened in recent history... ie, 300 years ago.

He'll sadam, kept trying to kill the sunnies, I think he was a Shiite. Not much diffrent than the catholics in Ireland, and the puritans in England. I think muslims are farked... Just because they still live in the middle ages. Kind of sucks when your culter peaked sometime during the middle ages.

2003-07-05 05:27:26 AM
Sadam was a secularist though his clan is Sunni and came from the Sunni dominated region of Iraq. You've got the two switched.

When you have a culture that goes back thousands of years, 300 years ago is recent history.

"We need to realize that these people are not our friends. Have the tragedies in Bosnia and Kosova taught us nothing? Did we not learn from the fact that the moment they have the opportunity, they will exterminate us? Has the current suffering of the Iraqi people taught us nothing? Its time to open our eyes. Look to the behavior of the Americans in the past. They fight against a country, destroy it, and rebuild it in their own image. Look to Germany and Japan as the prime examples. All they need is to get their foot in the door. These people do not love us. Allah, the One Who knows the hidden secrets of man has warned us! Do we disbelieve him? Will we not heed His warning? "

er, nice link wareagle germany and japan indeedy!

As a side issue, anyone care to have a guess what religion in the US is going to be like in, say, 500 years?

2003-07-05 06:12:24 AM
This is the kind of muslim violence that I like to see. Self-directed.

If only they'd either confine their killing to fellow muslims or finally have some kind of reformation and clean house. Whatever.

2003-07-05 06:12:38 AM
In Rummy's so fashionable sense, in response to rupturedtoad; "We don't know when 500 years will come, or how, but if it does, we still might be religious. Of what religion we be, it doesn't matter, but we will be it"

I'm canadian, so i'll say islamic, just to get my ass kicked.

Nimitz, it's not the same thing. Northern Ireland is about land, territory, not religion. The fact that the sides have differing religions does not make it a religious squabble.

This simple fact is misunderstood by many.

Demand it now.

As long as some asshole who claims that Mohammed, may his grave be plowed under a thousand times, is the greatest prophet *yawn*, so long do these people deserve to suffer ignominous death for their insufferable stupidity.

I do not want to sound reasonable
I do not want to be sensible
I am not sensitive to religious belief -are you farkING NUTS!-

Somebody check out history and make a conservative estimate of what religious hatred over the last 1,000 years (hey, it's just a mere fart in time anyway, right ?) has cost humanity in suffering, misery and missed revenue, destruction of property and waste of resources. All because god loves us so farking much.

The world sorely needs to be rid of the hatemongerers -Bush's totally vindicated war against Iraq-, the chronically uncritical -the 'religious' outcry against Rushdie's Satanic Verses, who everybody who protested against them undoubtedly has read and discussed thoroughly- and the laughable idiots -let us worship cows, a blue elephant and rats, yes that is cool, yes ?-.

These people don't know anything but they'll mess up your life all the same. We need to get rid of all the pseudo-science and start doing something useful. Worshipping god is not it.

To all the religiously inspired :

I barf in your general direction.

/totally therapeutic venting of frustration over the stupidity of my fellow-man/woman.

BrassHat, I think you pretty much summed what I was going to say.

Everytime I think of religion I still can't understand how in the year 2003, people still feel the need to believe in a magical institution which humanity should have outgrown about 500 years ago. Sure governments needed it earlier so they can control their people (not like that doesnt happen now!) but damn, give it up.

How can something that is so irrational, be so important to the lives of others that they feel the need to kill to reinforce their belief? Is it because they feel threatened by logic so they decide to kill off what is causing them doubt?

2003-07-05 08:15:13 AM
suffering, misery and missed revenue

i can't take it anymore

partic'ly no. 3

2003-07-05 08:24:55 AM
I still can't understand how in the year 2003

the muslim calendar is literally somewhere in the 1400s

being 'modern' is more than gadgets and gay marriage, y'know. don't let new things fool yaz into thinking we're all up to date. cuz we've walked on the moon but on another forum there's a guy what tells me "if there's no god, everything is permitted" -- in other words no such thing as a sense of honor or knowing there are situations where you simply cannot fart freely. this is the kind of person you DON'T WANT to lose their religion, unless gaining an instant social liability is the goal.

2003-07-05 08:49:24 AM
These asshats are still fighting about something that happened 1400 years ago. Bush thinks he can democratize them in, how long?

Good farkin' luck.

The key advantage of America over the rest of the world is our capacity to forgive and forget and not let the past cloud the present. The VAST majority of people came to this country with a sob story about how badly they were treated elsewhere, But we don't hold a grudge about it. when you ask people in the old yugoslavia why they want to kill everyone who's not one of them they start telling stories of insults back in the 12th century. And yet in America today our strongest ally was at one time our worst and first enemy.

To be sure America has been far from perfect on this issue of oppression: native americans, slavery, Japanese concentration camps. But at least America honestly tries to be better. And with time America does get better.

2003-07-05 09:55:04 AM
They're just stupid wogs. What did you expect?

2003-07-05 10:02:57 AM

Finally, the extremists start attacking their own. This could lead to peace, as both sides will kill each other.

I couldn't be happier. Too bad for, you know, reasonable (aka "normal, everyday muslims") that this will just reinforce stereotypes.

Shiite Muslims immediately took to the streets, setting fires and attacking buses and cars.

So they live in Dallas and their team just won/lost a game?

Ship them to Ireland.

From the link to the page describing Islamic differences:

Among those who claim to be Sunni Muslims are the Qadianies, who believe that a person by the name of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed appeared in the Indo-Pak subcontinent over a hundred years ago, and that he was a prophet of Allah who received divine revelation

Um...Mormons?

2003-07-05 10:29:36 AM
Shiite: Believes that Ali (Mohammed's son-in-law) is the successor of Mohammed.
Sunni: Believes AbuBakr is successor.
Sunnis took the power right away, 60 (or so) years ater, they killed Hussain, son of Ali, who was trying to get the power back.
Pakistan has always been the hotbed of sectarian killings and something close to 1000 people are being killed almost every year during the last 20 to 30 years.
Religion (and Islam in specific) and democracy are oximoron. As long as religion tries to interfere in politics you won't have democracy.
Religion is and has to be kept personal. Unfortunately all the religion leaders are power thirsty too so they try to impose their believes on others.
Humanity is seperate from religion you don't have to be believe in a man made religion (all of the religions) in order to be a good, conscientious human.

2003-07-05 10:39:00 AM
Shiite Muslims immediately took to the streets, setting fires and attacking buses and cars. Girding for more violence, the government called in troops to patrol the streets and imposed an indefinite curfew on the city.

Any bets on whether or not they were torching things that belonged to their fellow Shiites?

These people do not love us. Allah, the One Who knows the hidden secrets of man has warned us! Do we disbelieve him? Will we not heed His warning? "

Oh yeah, I think the translation from the Arabic went something like: "do not be decieved by any country calling itself "The United States of America" because they'll force feed you improper food, booze, seduce you with their blonde haired women, then turn you into a bunch of asshats who strap on explosives and blow up other People of the Book."

Of course I could have the translation wrong....

The majority of people in Pakistan have a Sunni disposition.

"rupturedtoad : When you have a culture that goes back thousands of years, 300 years ago is recent history"

The disagreement happened right after death of Mohammed as who lead the nation, Ali or Abu Bakr and peaked when Hussain was killed. There were almost always skirmishes after that. Besides, the religion is only 1400 lunar calendar years old (1380 solar years) not thousands as you put.

2003-07-05 10:50:36 AM
Don't they continue to proclaim Islam as the religion of peace. Uh..Yeah...Right!
