Ouch-that was painful to watch.

Probably not their car.

So what went wrong? That was some ugly smoke coming out of the exhaust. Thrown rod? Broke timing chain?

Oops. Guess someone should've sprung for Wiseco.

I'm not a mechanic, but seeing the white smoke, I'd say water has reached the exhaust.

At best, it's a blown seal, at worst a cracked block.

Either way, it's a big job to fix.

Looks like he's gonna need a new johnson rod there.

I think he's going to have to flouridate the flux capacitor with some 30-weight ball bearings and possibly recapitulate the solenoid.

That looks to me like it was done on purpose.

does anyone know if that car has a redline limiter?

Yes, but it can be turned off with a tuner. I suspect it was turned off since they were probably working on the tune.

must have blown the welds on the intake manifold. i'm surprised the floorboards are still intact.

I wonder if they were adding a nitrous kit, having only seen one blow an engine from behind I can't comment on the fire but the exhaust looked like that.

at the 1:07 mark, you can see the shift light come on. Driver doesn't back off the gas and over revs the engine.

As someone else already said, Im sure they were working on the tune and expected the engine to last past that mark and possibly still make power.

They had two cameras filming the dyno test?

Is that common? For insurance purposes or something?

Looks like he spun a muffler bearing and some blinker fluid leaked onto the overheated bearing. Easy fix.

2010-12-01 11:51:11 AM
This is what happens when you let your blinker fluid get to low.

Maybe this is a silly question, but why the hell was he sitting on the trunk? Seemed like an incredibly stupid thing to do considering the wheels were half an inch from the floor.

If the blowout thing didn't happen I would expect the Ferris Beuller - Cameron kicking the Ferrari thing to.

Phew, all that smoke. It's definitely oil. The fire... had to have been at the exhaust, maybe the manifold? Doesn't explain the oil though. Could be any number of things.

Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block and replace the piston rings you fried.

the engine pops as soon as the throttle closes - you CANNOT let a forced induction car go lean.

these chumps are tooners, not tuners.

The car is on a Dyno. Strapped down and they put the fat guy on the trunk to compress the suspension more and put more downforce on the Dyno. The car is not going anywhere.

Weight in the ass of the car = more traction. You can't get an accurate dyno reading if your tires are slipping on the rollers.

If the blowout thing didn't happen I would expect the Ferris Beuller - Cameron kicking the Ferrari thing to.

The car's all sorts of strapped onto that dyno.

Oh, ok. That makes sense.

I (obviously) don't know a lot about cars and it looked like they only had it up on a jack.

Trying to get as much weight over the rear wheels as possible to prevent it climbing off of the rollers.

With a dyno, if the rollers aren't rated high enough, cars can climb off the rollers during testing, which is all sorts of bad. Remember those Evil Kinevel wind up stunt motorcycles that you spun up the rear wheel and then drop them onto the ramp and they zoom off? Well imagine what happens when you do something similar with a 500+ BHP Chunk of metal weighing a couple of tons inside a garage.
