A company spokeswoman declined to say where the eggs would be sold.

Is that legal?

Hey, if it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger. Amirite?

*of course, it put me in the hospital for 11 days and on deaths door for a few hours and I learned the word neutropenic and blah blah blah...

Go watch Food, Inc. Pretty much every big chicken company (Tyson, Perdue, etc) keeps their chickens the same way. I stopped eating fast food burgers after seeing it, and started buying meat from the hormone free / grazing section at the grocery store.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there, science-boy. I'm trying to spread panic over here.

The violations included doors forced open by piles of manure and the presence of live mice, which can carry salmonella.

So the presence of dead mice is OK?

I got to be apart of an audit for an egg co. QC, QA, RD, and many other depts. were involved in touring the facility, asking questions etc. I was in RD group at the time, and was the only person who wanted to tour where the chickens nest and lay their eggs. The only reason everyone else declined to do so was that you had to shower before, robe up, and shower after the tour. Their director of quality was pissed because I insisted only out of pure curiosity. Let me tell you despite being a state of the art facility those farking birds were still crammed in cages, shiating on each other as they were vertically stored, and other many other things that I saw and was scared to ask about.

I was thinking of getting a pet lizard recently but I then read about how their feces can contain salmonella and that you have to very carefully wash your hands after handling them and should perhaps think twice about having one when pregnant or with little kids in the house.

That sh*t's nasty.

For every video of a nasty animal farming operation, there's a video showing that same farm as clean, humane, and well-run. Cherry-picking your data allows you to present any extreme of the same situation.

Regardless, how livestock animals are kept in this country is pretty disgusting. If cats, dogs, anything "cute" were kept like that, the place would be shut down in under a week.

somewhat on topic to your statement. do you by chance watch Animal Cops on the Discovery: Animal Planet channel? they went to a Cocker Spaniel dog breeding facility and found 33 Spaniels completely matted, the smell was overwhelming of Ammonia from never having been cleaned, covered in maggots, no food, no water, absolutely horrid conditions. there is actually a Facebook page to try and get justice for the dogs, to this date no one has been arrested for the crimes. If interested search for Justice for the Rosenberg 32 (new window).

I liked the part in Food inc where Joel Salatin tells the story of people thinking $3 a dozen for free range eggs are too expensive. I pay more than that for one lousy domestic beer at a bar.

Corporate agriculture is way too powerful in the US. Ask Oprah about the lawsuit brought by the beef industry against her. She won't even discuss it. Mind you she won that case. When you can shut Oprah up you are way to powerful.

Ask your retired relatives what their copay for their medications are and then add the cost of their medicare part D plan. If you start spending the same amount now for real food you stand a pretty good chance of having to spend it later on prescriptions.

What the hell are you doing buying beer at a bar, you can buy a case of domestic and get trashed for what it takes to catch a mild buzz at a bar.

Meh. It's overblown. The same things are true of handling raw eggs or meat and the risk level is probably comparable.

It seems like a good idea. Why not inoculate people who are likely to be exposed to food poisoning with weakened and otherwise harmless bacteria? They could just swallow a pill a day for a week, and by the end of that time, they would be resistant to salmonella, e coli, and others.

And yes, there are a lot of people who know that they are going to be exposed to such contamination.

That was probably just part of the terms of the lawsuit's resolution (was it settled out of court?) It's not unusual for there to be a "keep your mouth shut about the settlement" clause in such suits.
