Lucas can have a great vision, but he doesn't know how to edit. Lucas is good as long as he has strong people around him who can stand up to him. Kershner made Empire Strikes Back so good because he took Lucas's vision and made it work, even doing things that Lucas didn't like, like creating a very famous line because the original line didn't make sense for the character.

If you watch Red Letter Media's critique of the prequels, this is where they went wrong. Instead of being surrounded by other powerful talents, Lucas was surrounded by spineless yes men. No one was going to tel him that the script as he had written it was absolute shiat because he is George Lucas. This also happened to Crystal Skull.

I wasn't giving Kershner all the credit. I was just saying that the people who were around Lucas when he was making the original trilogy are a big reason of why it was such a success.

I'm always stunned he didn't direct many mainstream films, empire strikes back's directing was PHENOMINAL.

Despite the mainstream, I don't particularly enjoy empire strikes back as much as the other two (the plot is way more absurd than the ewoks winning) but I have always loved the directing.

Such subtlety everywhere.

There's an article I read years back that analyzed (so an insane detail) every tiny thing that Irvin did in the movie to make it such a great movie. I should try and find it again.

The Empire Strikes Back was the best of the Star Wars movies and that was due in large part to Mr. Irvin Kershner.

Best line in the film is directly attributable to he and Ford fighting it out with Lucas. Don't short-sell his contribution to the greatness that is TESB.

That soundtrack was the peak of his career. I mean that in a positive way - it's an astonishing musical buildup from the beginning of the movie to the end.

The asteroid field still gives me chills.

The whole subplot about the Wampas in the Rebel Base would have been included by GL, had he directed.

The pacing of the movie is great. The music is great, the script (and rewrites) is great. I think I'll watch it tonight (the real, unf'ed with one).

Lucas has a tendency to do that. I got to work with Gary Kurtz for a while in August. He had some nice things to say about Lucas, but also said that the guy is VERY hands on and that tends to push some people away from him.

Really? I thought that was one of the better Bonds. Far better than any of the official releases at the time. Compare it to say Moonraker for instance that came out the same year.

CSB warning: I remember an article in the Globe and Mail after PM came out. In it, Lucas stated two interesting things:

1) when he did the original Star Wars, he showed his first cut to his friends Spielberg, Brian DePalma, and FF Coppola (and some other guys who I knew became very big but I can't remember their names). They said he had a great idea, but it really needed some work. Apparently all of them contributed to reworking the movie

2) he claimed that no one thought Jar Jar was racist until a columnist in the LA Times made a false claim.
