Birch beer is an affront to humanity, and those who associate with it and/or willingly choose it over root beer SHOULD be sought out and driven from our midst whenever possible. There is a war coming, and it's time to choose a side.

Duh. Teabaggers are John Birchers, repackaged to be less anti-Semitic.

actually, the Tea Party idiots make the Birchers look like bleeding heart liberals.

In a column, Buckley denounced the John Birch Society and called Welch's views "so far removed from common sense."

Which of course is why the Birchers and the Teabaggers are a perfect fit.

Cagey B: Duh. Teabaggers are John Birchers, repackaged to be less anti-Semitic.

They still are, they just chose a different Semitic group this time - Muslims.

FTA: "Buckley pushed the John Birch Society and its followers, called 'Birchers,' out of the American conservative movement after the group's founder and leader, Robert Welch, expressed his view that President Dwight D. Eisenhower was a 'dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.'"

Why would the tea party align themselves with a group that called our president as a secret member of a Communist conspir... oh. Nevermind.

Lets just drop the bomb and let the cockroaches take over.

Eisenhower was a 'dedicated, conscious agent of the Communist conspiracy.'"

But see: "Antiwar.com editorial director Justin Raimondo, a John Birch Society supporter who has written about the John Birch Society in depth, told The Daily Caller that he believes Buckley's most decisive split with Welch was over Vietnam. Welch advocated against entering an "unwinnable war," as Raimondo puts it, something that infuriated Buckley and what Raimondo terms as other "neo-cons." So, Raimondo said, Buckley attacked the John Birch Society through Welch."

But wait! I was told the Tea Party, contrary to what everyone was judging to be the case, is made up of intelligent, well educated people.

Palin Being Advised by Project for the New American Century

"The small inner circle that shapes Palin's voice day to day includes lobbyist Randy Scheunemann, a director of the neoconservative think tank Project for the New American Century, who advises Palin on foreign affairs, and Kim Daniels, a lawyer with the Thomas More Law Center, which has been called "the Christian answer to the A.C.L.U.," who advises her on domestic issues."

Thomas Sowell is, if not as well known as Buckley, a far more imposing and formidable intellectual force on the right than Buckley ever was. Not the least because he and Buckely both distinguished between intellectualism as a trait, and Intellectuals as a profession, arguing that the latter deserve suspicion due to their lengthy track record of promoting dubious schemes and dodging blame when their plans go to shiat in the real world.

Weaver95: actually, the Tea Party idiots make the Birchers look like bleeding heart liberals.

I'm not so sure about that, as I've lived through both. On the other hand...

My parents were Birchers in the 60's and early 70's. They really believed that there was a Communist behind every bush, rock and roll song, water treatment plant, etc. They finally had enough when one of their fellow Birchers, at a summer barbeque, murdered with wild abandon and an automatic rifle, a pine tree that he called a F*CKING COMMIE!!!! DIE F*CKING COMMIE DIE!!!!!!

My folks loaded us in the truck, took us home, and never spoke of the John Birch Society again ;)

As a root beer supporter in the heart of birch beer country, it heartens me greatly that the Boobies in this thread should reference this important matter instead of the ridiculous "politics" that are thrown about so much.

Lived next door to a Bircher almost 40 years ago. A paranoid SOB who kept an enormous dog in his backyard riled up and barking ALL THE TIME. What could possibly be the point of a watch dog that barked at everything was an object lesson his paranoia never connected to.

Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could.

One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed - different plans have to be made. And the kernel here is the acknowledgement of defeat.

I won't insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said.

If all conservatives were like Buckley the U.S. would be a much better place. His insistence on consistentcy was his greatest character trait. He wasn't willing to simply embrace random ideas but insisted that his views and those of his guests fit into a coherent framework. Unlike Sarah Palin he actually knew what he was talking about and wasn't willing to be a hypocrite.

Beliefs
As might be expected of someone of Oliver's ultraright background, he had some very strong beliefs. Here are some of them.

· The Holocaust was a hoax.
· The white race is more intelligent that the black.
· JFK was assassinated by a Communist plot in cooperation with the CIA.
· JFK was a Communist agent who was assassinated because he was about to "turn American".
· Karl Marx wrote "idiotic mumbo-jumbo."
· All children are born unequal.
· We must encourage intelligent people to reproduce and inhibit those of lesser intelligence from doing so.
· Most "intellectuals" are just "frightened zombies."
· The United Nations is a bunch of subhumans in a glass cage.
· Franklin D. Roosevelt was a "diseased creature" who surrounded himself in the White House with an "appalling gang of degenerates, traitors, and alien subversives."

I'm fairly middle of the road, liberal on some things, conservative on others. But even I think we need to GTFO of the United Nations, stop policing the world, and let other nations live or die by their own hands.

Birchers... also have advocated a shift back to the gold standard in the economy and believe that isolationism is the proper foreign policy position. As a whole, the Tea Party movement hasn't weighed in on foreign policy, nor has it endorsed going back to the gold standard,

Two peas in a pod I see.
