EBT cards are used for welfare check payments in addition to food stamps, submitter. That's probably what he was getting.

Plus you can add cash to them much the same way you can a prepaid credit card, but without the fees.

Not in Minnesota you can't. I also want to ask a rhetorical question: What kind of retard would let a half wit drug dealer anywhere near their EBT card???

/Besides a half wit drug addict, that is

They used state welfare money to buy drugs. Now investigators are tracking them down.

lol, where did the state think that welfare money went?

Don't EBT cards use picture ID at all or anything? The fact that you can just give them to someone else and they work doesn't seem right.

The cards in the article are like debit cards, you just need the PIN and the card and you can take cash out of any ATM.

They use the Oregon Trail card here, but unless things have changed, the only time you might be asked to show ID is when you're using food stamps. In Oregon both welfare payments and food stamps are loaded onto EBT cards. However, some people get only food stamps and not cash assistance. When using the Oregon Trail card you have to imput the PIN, so if your card is lost or stolen, that makes it more difficult for someone else to use it.

oregonsafenet.org

Oregon also uses a debit card (Reliacard) for unemployment payments. It looks like a standard debit card and is issued by U.S. Bank.

Not in Oregon. Cash assistance is added by the DHS (Department of Human Resources). You cannot personally add cash to your Oregon Trail card. However, any unused cash assistance and/or food stamps will roll over to the next month.

Some people who get food benefits are actually needy because they're not *able* to work, not because of the stars tattooed on their faces.

People can let a friend or family member go shopping for them, and really, it shouldn't be any other way for just that reason.

Not in Wisconsin with the "Quest" card either.

BTW, subby, drug dealers have done this for decades. It was simpler in the past with actual physical stamps, but it's still done often

This is how paper money began.

I'm pretty sure this has been going on for years. The EBT cards just make a little more difficult.

So what's new? Alot of these food stamp people would sell them for ½ the value anyway, same as when they used to be paper food stamps. Why wouldn't a drug dealer take them, he has to eat too. I don't see a problem with this, if caught, the food stamp people get their benefits forfeited. Just like if the local crack whore would steal steaks from a store and sell them for half the value, it's the same thing and will never change.

2010-11-25 02:53:30 AM
I won't lie I buy stamps(100EBT for 70cash) from people.
/Part of the problem

2010-11-25 02:54:34 AM
The buyers gave their pin numbers to the dealer so he could use the cards.

Cue the grammar Nazis....

2010-11-25 02:56:21 AM
Oh yeah, all you have to do is enter a PIN when using the food stamp card. No ID required to prove you are the person on the card. It's just a debit card. They could enforce an ID check, but then that would inconvenience the people selling them and would have to go to the store for the buyers.

2010-11-25 02:57:12 AM
I have no idea how hard it is to convert food stamps to cash today, but when I knew people who got food stamps (early '90s) they were cash. Every person I knew who got food stamps turned them into cash instantly. They got less than face value, but they got cash for them.

Seriously, I know exactly one person who actually used food stamps to buy food. Me. For four months to tide me over once. Everybody else used them to get cash, and then had to pay cash for food, because, yes, they really are that stupid.

/handy hint: food stamp users don't pay sales tax
//so even if you get face value for cash you're still screwing yourself
///and nobody pays face value for food stamps

They're (food-stamps) a good buy.

I have to buy groceries anyway, so why not pay off my alcholic neighbor for three cents on the dollar to meet both his needs and mine?

2010-11-25 03:27:24 AM
So let me get this straight, items that have value and can be used toward cash and/or other goods, and are freely transferable in terms of user, can itself be used to barter for illicit drugs, in lieu of cash?

Golly. Will wonders never cease.

2010-11-25 03:32:10 AM
The people I have heard about that sell food stamps all sell them for 50 cents on the dollar...and no they don't ID. No one gives a shiat.

I recognize the necessity to extend a temporary lifeline to people who have come into hard times so that they can feed their family until they can get back on their feet but this is not what the majority of the social safety net in the US has been used for.

I married the only good egg out of a bad ("extremely disadvantaged")family. For example, after her dad died from sclerosis of the liver and hepatitis C, one of my wife's aunts was so farked up she was the first to shoot her teenage son up with oxys.

She had her youngest son smoking cigarettes at 3, weed at 5 and worse after that. They are all on section 8 and disability. They live for free and even better they get payed for it.

Occasionally they fall asleep at the wheel on methadone and sue someone for 40K or so and party like rock stars until the next lawsuit or home invasion.

As common as this is, something that also makes me sick is when someone claims to be a single mother that doesn't know who the father of their child is (even if they know), and then gets emergency section 8 housing paid for. Then their drug dealing boyfriend who just happened to not sign the paternity papers moves in and sells drugs from their humble, government sponsored abode.

In short, random drug testing and random raids of the residence to test male 'friends' who are often at a section 8 residence should be requirements to receive government aid.

Living for free is not a right, assistance should be distributed when absolutely necessary and not wasted on systematic leeches.

News? My parents bought their drugs like this 20 years ago.

Later, when they had moved up in the world and became drug dealers themselves they took the debit cards as payment too.

One family they sold too had 5 kids and more foodstamps than you could shack a stick at. Mom would cut them off each month after they spent about five hundred dollars of foodstamps on weed alone. And they were friends, so they got the 1:1 exchange rate.

Food Stamp money is separate from welfare money. Just sayin.

And now would be a good time to get the people who had these cards into a serious treatment program. Get them a skill set and get them back into the tax payer category.

It IS worth a shot.

I used to occasionally get a real nice meal while on stamps. I mean, why not by value brand most of the time and use the rest for an occasional treat?

/doesn´t DFS catch on when you request a new card every month?

Pretty much this. If you are on food stamps you do not buy name brand anything. You can have good meals without spending a fortune,it just takes a little know how and common sense. Also from what I've saw when people sell their foodstamps they usually either go with the person to shop or the person spends the stamps and gives their card back. It's only when things go bad that they ask for new cards. Things going bad usually means an argument or the person they sold to is wanting to keep their card. I just have to say selling your foodstamps is the stupidest farking thing ever. Yeah you'll have cash/drugs/whatever you traded for a little while but then you're going to starve the rest of the month.

I was on food stamps for several months in '92 with 2 kids in diapers.

If I was conservative with my shopping, then, yeah, about 1 time each month I could afford a porterhouse.

Sue me, or blow me. Take yer pick.

Abusing the program is not as prevalent as you might think. Does sheeyat like this happen?

Yes.

But saving as many of the children as possible is a worthwhile proposition.

And thank FSM you can. I shop on a regular basis for three elderly ladies (I call them "the very old ladies"), and if it weren't for the EBT cards, I'd go nuts trying to figure out exact change for each of them. Being elderly and a tad of a pain in the rear (kidding, I love those broads) they insist on making sure I get reimbursed for any cash I have to pay out. The EBT cards make it easy, but I really wish you could purchase some non-food items with them, such as toilet tissue, soap etc. That way I wouldn't have to worry about carrying around a virtual cash register.

And drug dealers and the food stamps/EBT cards is very old news. Been going on forever. I remember years back this one parasitic scum bag running around with a huge wad of the old fashioned paper food stamps and and treating them just like cash. He used to hang in this bar where he dealt his poison, and even the bar tender would take food stamps in payment for his drinks. I haven't thought about that guy in years. I hope he's dead, the scum bucket.
