On the reproductive front, the survey found a fertile woman could sell 32 egg cells over eight years for a grand total of $224,000. To approach that amount, a man would have to make 12 sperm donations a month for 20 years.

I don't think many of us would have a problem with that.

2003-07-02 07:08:57 PM
actually, you only clear about 1.2 million in USD on the european black market for chopshop work

oh ... this DOESN'T involve kidnapping and murder ... whoops

2003-07-02 07:21:18 PM
And I've been wasting my time with the white slave trade. Boy do I have egg on my face, thanks Reuters now I know to sell them piece-by-piece.

2003-07-02 10:04:56 PM
For the math impaired:

12 sperm donations a month for 20 years would equal 2880 donations.
Or in Fark terms - a weekends worth!

Get to work boys!

I've got a towel worth $4.3 million.

2003-07-02 11:29:59 PM
Can I have the $ now and give them the body in a few years?

2003-07-03 01:16:29 AM
I think donating that much would make you go blind.

Bone marrow $23,000 per gram?

Bone marrow extraction proceedure reportedly a close second to a spinal tap in level of pain.

Masochists have excellent career oportunities here.

2003-07-03 01:33:13 AM
12 a month? Little eraser can handle that with ease. Bring me something tough!

2003-07-03 01:34:31 AM
I have made almost $3000 selling plasma, it is was a great way to get beer money. When you are a poor college student you will do almost anything for beer money. Just get a needle stuck in your arm, sit there for an hour, walk out $25 richer. Good deal.

2003-07-03 01:34:51 AM
this isnt exactly the cats meow but ill take it on a fork 3 times the garden!

2003-07-03 01:35:33 AM
So that's how Gates got rich...selling the souls of the damned! (Insert catchy joke about microsoft competator being the damned)

2003-07-03 01:38:08 AM
If you clear the tests, sperm banks are the way to go.

2003-07-03 01:42:08 AM
Psh, now that's what I call sexism. I mean, they both contribute 23 chromosomes. Why are eggs worth so much more? Because we live in a sexist society, that's why.

(PS: Was I write, with the 23? It's been a long time since I finished high school biology. More than a year now.)

2003-07-03 01:42:46 AM
Nothing immoral about selling your own body parts. I mean, they're yours...

Let the philosophical flamewar begin.

2003-07-03 01:43:54 AM
I'll sell you a lobe of my liver.

2003-07-03 01:44:45 AM
A large male organ could command a kings ransom, or so I'm told. I'm here all week, don't forget to tip the girls.

2003-07-03 01:45:06 AM
Hold on, am I having deja-vu? I swore some comedian guy or something was talking about this on TV like 2 days ago. Who knows, maybe there's a glitch or they changed something in the mainframe.

2003-07-03 01:46:22 AM
You may have an extra chromosome there deevo.

2003-07-03 01:46:31 AM
I wish it was as easy for women to donate. I've considered donating eggs...but there is too much risk involved, and certainly a goodly amount of pain.

I mean...would you want to take a month of drugs to completely shut down your balls? Wouldn't you be afraid of permanently damaging your family jewels?

Ah well. Also sucks that my veins are so tiny that I can't sell my plasma.

/biatching

2003-07-03 01:52:08 AM
I think donating eggs is more valuable because of the fact that women only produce once a month, while men produce millions of sperm in one go. How old do you have to be to be able to give plasma for money?

2003-07-03 01:52:35 AM
Please, $224,000 is a lot of money but you are all forgetting the kittens....

/cliche

2003-07-03 01:54:40 AM
Helllllooooooo Ebay!

I've got an old t-shirt worth millions. Just add warm water...

I traded my body for a lifetime membership to a gym. I didn't notice the irony at the time.

I'm going to try to find some rich guy who is missing a left hand. I'd be willing to sell a useless extremity for a few million. Sure, it would make typing a lot slower but I could pay someone to type for me! Or I could afford voice recognition software. And I'd be able to afford hookers so I wouldn't need to masturbate with that hand any more. Life would be grand. I could even afford a bionic hand. Or I'd get a fake hand, go up to people to shake and let it come off. Then I'd start screaming. It would be a hoot!

Fvck, I'm toasted right now.

2003-07-03 02:14:38 AM
Well, there's a good medical malpractice damages cap: ~$45,000,000

Issue resolved!

2003-07-03 02:15:47 AM
If only I had known this sooner than all those kittens would have not died in vain, and dam, all that money down the drain.

2003-07-03 02:22:33 AM
I think we are all missing the point. 45 million would buy one hell of a robot body for your brain to live in. Think about it! Flame throwers, rocket lauchers, x-ray vision, jet pack, grappling hook arms, and a toaster in place of your right leg! You'd never be toastless ever again!

2003-07-03 02:24:07 AM
But it does lay to rest the old concept that the human body, when broken down to its basic elements, is only worth pocket change.

Umm...no. Unless a kidney or glob of marrow is a "basic element..." If you break the body down into its basic elements (i.e. those things on the periodic table), it's still worth almost nothing.

/pointless nitpicking...

2003-07-03 02:32:37 AM
I'd sell a few grams of bone marrow at those prices. pain is temporary.

2003-07-03 02:34:49 AM
Sorry suckerpunch, but I'm afraid robots dont have marrow.

2003-07-03 02:44:51 AM
Even an overweight, out-of-shape body could bring millions...

It's almost as if they're telling us to go out and kill an overweight person...Or maybe that's my imagination. Silly imagination.

2003-07-03 02:53:49 AM
So what are the tests involved in giving up some of my little wigglers? How fast do I have to run? Do I have to give proof of intelligence (good luck!)? I have likely lost millions down the shower drain. Damn you shampoo, damned whore of the shower.

2003-07-03 03:20:36 AM
so, who wants to buy some useless pieces of me?
i'd sell a lung but given that i smoke like 40 a day, i might need them both :(
that guy with 2 livers could surely make a few bucks!
wish i had a siamese twin.
"say, i got a spare heart and stuffs, wanna buy?"
other head says "err heywaitamin.."*whack* shutup.

ok i'm not funny, i'll go back to lurking now.

Late, but what the hell.

[image from reelinsider.com too old to be available]

Imagine how much money he would make if he had a bake sale!

2003-07-03 03:27:36 AM
Whoa hold on a sec. That $224,000 figure breaks down to $11,200 per year or $77.00 per session. Do they really pay that much?

2003-07-03 03:44:00 AM
I have a gym sock that is worth an untold fortune.

Egg donors can make in and around $8000, depending on education level and things like eye color and general health. As a light-green-eyed PhD student, I could be raking it in, except my fiance doesn't dig the idea that you *could* end up sterile.

2003-07-03 04:09:18 AM
Who the hell would pay $1.3 million per gram for your DNA? What possible use does it have, other than combining it with lobster DNA to create a race of super-soldiers?

2003-07-03 04:22:43 AM

I take it that she wants to be sure.

Well, I guess that's one way to pay for college...

Ibn: Well, if you change your name to Skywalker, it just might happen.
