Tillmaster: They struck me as a bunch of incompetent loonies.

True, but it seems to work for them. I'm not sure why, but whatever.

CT_Kirk: Stupid is that he had duct tape to fashon an SOS but didn't have the insight to use it to patch his raft.

I agree. I have used a roll or two to patch a 2' by 3' hole in a boat and it sailed several miles back home. It wasn't my boat, but I'm a helpful sort of guy. However an inflatable raft/dinghy/kayak may pose a few problems due to the pressure required for inflation. However, if you are going out in something you have to inflate, I'm not sure why you don't have a repair kit, pump and a clue.

Bet he wishes he'd brought his volleyball with him now.

I'm shocked that he couldn't fix his inflatable boat using pieces of styrofoam. It probably would have worked if he'd rubbed a little sand and urine over the hole first, to prime it properly.

Hows 'bout, "Thanks, eventually-to-be-Darwined Teabagger dude!"

You see, my conundrum was more along the lines of "he's smart enough to realize he's dumb, but dumb enough to keep being dumb..."

No offense, but I think that automatically disqualifies him from being a teabagger. That would be more along the lines of "he really has no idea he's dumb."

Also, article doesn't really paint him as a teabagger-type.

I love the list you made, but yikes, dude. Not in a sentence about illiterate people.

/ Unless you really mean that the mannequin had an insincere tone throughout the whole date. I'll buy that, I guess.

tomWright: "The weather," Hopper said, "was not working with my needs."

Right, from a guy who endangered himself and may have incurred further medical costs because he "didn't want to cost taxpayers any money."

Oh, so close! Liberals talk like socialists: we should all be helping each other equally. 'Baggers talk like idiot "rugged individualists" who want the world to revolve around them a la John Galt even though (and especially because) it's to their own detriment.

Thank you for playing, "Out the 'Bagger," tomWright. You've been outed as a 'bagger. Please hand in what remaining IQ points you have and shuffle off stage.

You know, I'm cool with what he did...except for that "naked and hanging out with a mannequin of Arnold" thing. That's just a little bit creepy.

If I had found myself on a deserted island in pretty temperate conditions (temperate enough to go fishing while naked), I like to think I could use the opportunity to practice the survival skills I think I have. If I had managed to build adequate shelter and secure a food supply of sorts, I might be tempted to "forget" about that cell phone until I had had my fill of not being aroung THAT SHRIEKING HARPY OF A WIFE AND THOSE DAMNED UNGRATEFUL KIDS!!!

Sorry. Touch-type Tourette's strikes again.

So if the guy had managed to fix his boat and make it to land without having to call the CG, he could have saved us all some money and he'd have a neat story to tell. As it is, he gave it a try for 5 days and finally made the call. I'm cool with that.

I beg to differ. IF he really was trying to draw awareness to social diseases, there's no way he was a real 'bagger. 'Baggers don't care about people who whore around and get the clap, or the AIDS, or the pregnant.

"I thought I could fix my boat and make it to land. ... I didn't want to spend the taxpayers' money to have the Coast Guard come rescue some stupid guy."

This is not stupid in the slightest.

Calling for rescue puts other people in danger, you only do it as a last resort in the face of death. As long as he had his options open for fixing the boat and self-rescue, my hat is off to him for trying to extricate himself and NOT immediately calling for help.

This is what a real sailor would do.

2010-11-23 01:26:54 PM
If the phone worked, I would call my friends and say "I'm at this location, my boat broke in this way, I have food and water and I'm fine. I'm fixing the boat, and will check in tomorrow. DO NOT CALL A RESCUE FOR ME."

Then turn off the phone to save the battery, saving it for the next mornings radio check.

And if it turns out I'm really stuck, ask the friends to come get me themselves. In their own boat or rent one or whatever it took.

"The Coast Guard also worked with Hopper's cell phone provider to triangulate his signal".

Doubtful. More like the cell phone provider used multilateration to determine his exact location.

DeathByGeekSquad: Reeves said Hopper once lived in a cave in Nevada for three months, had walked through Death Valley and had made a Northern California forest his home for an entire year. "When we found him," Reeves said, "he was naked and fishing in a stream ... He's been living off the land for at least 20 years."

This man should be committed.

Why?

C`mon, the guy had a bible. Of course he expected the weather to suit his needs. He thinks the ENTIRE FREAKIN UNIVERSE was made just for humans to exist in some sort of figurative and literal garden of eden.
