Random Reality Check: At what point does our dysfunctional government begin to resemble that of the near-collapse Soviet Union?

We need moar military!!! Moar! Moar!

Isn't that what happened to the USSR?

Random Reality Check: At what point does our dysfunctional government begin to resemble that of the near-collapse Soviet Union? We no longer debate whether we should be investing in our country or if so where. There is no longer any attempt to develop any sort of cohesiveness, or orchestrate a direction that would allow for progress to be made. Instead, we "little people" watch somewhat passively as our government (if you can realistically call it that) continues to tear itself apart, at our expense.

Being old enough to have watched the disintegration of the Soviet Union, I was hoping that we wouldn't implode in much the same way. Of course, as long as you have solid ties to whatever mob replaces this farce of a government, everything will be okay in the breadlines.

I'm inclined to argue that the "little people" got what they voted for (except for those who didn't bother to vote at all, which is another tier of failure.)

So this, finally, is the level our national discourse has come to.
We're back in junior high school now, where Buffy won't talk to Kaitlin any more because she heard Kaitlin kissed Bobby behind the gym and anyway she was mean to her friend at the dance last year.
A nation of children - and our much deserved spanking is just about here.

I hope all you partisans who love to spend your lives bickering about this horseshiat enjoy the fire next time - cause it's going to be a hot one.

Ted Haggard's Poop-Stained Replicock: 1) Pick your favorite Boehner, I don't care.

2) Give me two days inside his office, sizing up the Boehner.

3) Then let me join the other side a put together a counter-Boehner strategy.

You won't have a chance.

Not because I'm a bigger Boehner tactician, which I am, but because I have such a huge Boehner advantage over you

maniacbastard: Wut? Are you some kind of pussy?

If you're talking about the Democrats, seems they have a Senate and a big ol Veto pen.

So, when Republicans can't get anything accomplished, who are they going to blame?

Ah, selective memory. No, he included many of the proposals the GOP put forth. The GOP decided that making health care Obama's "Waterloo" was a great strategy for wining an election and discrediting the president, so they still cried like little babies despite his bending to them.

But go on with your version if that makes you feel better.

We already do. The level of government bending over to corporations including no-bid contracts, outright gifts, and laws made to hand out more corporate power make us more like the Soviet Union in the 1970's and 1980's than we ever have been. Capitalist? You need to be even slightly fair to be a capitalist nation, and that went out a long time ago.

2010-11-19 09:30:47 AM
Well considering during health care negotiations the republicans demanded (repeatedly) that Obama include them in the meetings. When Obama wanted to include them in the meetings? Republicans claimed it was some sort of secret plot to make them look bad and didn't go.

Republicans also have failed to repeatedly show up for the deficit panel.

So, no surprises here.

2010-11-19 09:37:21 AM
Speaker-Elect Snooki is a lot of things (like a crybaby), but an idiot isn't one of them.

He, along with the rest of the GOP know that the message is more important than the substance. Yell the lie, repeat the lie, get other people to repeat the lie, then the lie becomes the truth. The takeaway for 90% of the people from this will be "Can you beleive that Obama wouldn't meet with Republicans to talk about tax cuts?"

This is why the GOP is so very good at winning elections, they know that its much more important to talk about governing than it is to actually govern. An actual meeting between Boner and Obama doesn't generate any 15-second sound bytes that can be replayed over and over on 24-hour cable news networks, a press conference does.

There was no such thing as "anti-incumbent" fever, it was "anti-democrat" fever. 86% of Incumbents were re-elected, and something like 98% of GOP incumbents were re-elected. The "anti-incumbent" thing was a buzzword they were using to pretend that tea party movement was in any way non-partisan.

the dems were likely to lose newly-gained seats they won during Obama's hype campaign anyways, everybody knew that was a possibility regardless of what happened in 2010

anti-incumbent fever was less about actually replacing politicians and more with scaring politicians into being serious about their job

the only people who actively wanted to replace politicians were tea-partiers

After a lengthy meeting of Senate Democrats aimed in part at hammering out a unified position on extending the Bush tax cuts, Majority Leader Harry Reid emerged without an agreement, but still calling for a vote.

McConnell spokesperson: "this week was too crowded with orientation for newly elected members of congress for a meaningful bipartisan summit with the White House."

Gibbs took no issue with that reported explanation from Republicans. "The test is not when the meeting is held. It's whether the two sides can work together to make progress," said Gibbs.

Just spitballing here, but maybe it would be best if everyone were prepared before we jumped on the whole aha bandwagon?

So because Democrats lost, Republicans are free to act like morons, assholes and sociopaths?

Because you're going to switch doctors in January, you can eat deep-fried lard balls, smoke 2 packs/day and have unprotected sex with hookers? After all, the new guy is SO much better, right?

A press conference gets NOTHING done except cock-stroking. A meeting with the other people voting on the proposal hammers out a potential compromise, and saves time on the floor.

So congratulations on wasting taxpayer money (and bargaining time) for a PR stunt. The win tastes good, doesn't it?

Republicat: Typical Democrat partiers. After two years of getting their way on everything and claiming to work with Republicans, they're going to pout and sulk because the voters repudiated their agenda.

Instead of dealing with the issues here at home by meeting with Republican leaders, Obama flew across the international dateline to spend more taxpayer money to fail at diplomacy.

I'm sure Obama regrets his first two years. But hindsight is 20/20, and he can't change past. But he can change the future by spending just 48 hours in Washington to meet with Boehner and McConnell for 60 minutes to solve our tax issues.

That'd be wishful thinking, though. He'll just drag Boehner into the crossfire between Democrat politicians and the liberal media, and the country will burn while Obama fiddles a debt-laden tune.

9/10 pretty convincing 'specially 'cause you turned the whole thing around. Good job.
