wmoonfox: What a farking scam. Does it compare against a list of known hashes? Really? All the images on the drive? Does it recover the deleted images, perhaps partially overwritten, and compare those, too?

This may look like magic to the completely technologically inept, but in reality it probably takes 20 minutes to discover the same kind of information that you could dig up in 5 minutes looking around manually. Same kind of forensic tools as the police? Fark you... I spun up and worked in a computer forensics department for five years; our "tools" generally consisted of filtered, recursive searches. Yeah, we had data recovery software, but it was the same stuff you could acquire commercially.

I love how everyone thinks the police have cutting edge equipment. In reality, we are at least 2 years behind the curve, and more realistically 5 years. Even the hard core crypto departments outsource all the techo stuff to private contractors.

What this really does is search for images yes, but it also looks at deleted files. When you delete a file, it's not actually deleted, just the pointer record to where that data exists on the disk. You can use programs to delete deleted data, or you can just defrag your hardrive (not 100% sucessful depending on how bad it needed it but helps.

No need to store porn at all is there? You can go get more at any time. CCCleaner should take care of the "tracking" information this thing is after.

If you are going to store it, USB drive. Remove. Hide.

You still need CCCleaner to get rid of the tracking stuff.

Because what the world needs more are stuff that makes it easier to violate rights and privacy.

Technology like this in the hands of professional and accountable authorities is ok, but making it available for commerical use doesn't sit well with me. Just because I don't have child porn on my harddrive doesn't mean I will be ok with you looking at the smut I've deleted.

Too bad they don't make some sort of drive that can be attached externally to the PC only when one wants access to the content it contains.

yep, that'd be useful.

The simplest thing would be to boot a stripped down linux image that could mount FAT32, NTFS and EXT volumes and then search any browser caches and recycle bins, then just throw every image found up on the screen in a thumbnail browser. No need to do specific checks or image recognition, humans do a pretty good job of identifying porn images.

You could also search for images everywhere on the system, and perhaps even do a little file table forensics to undelete or retrieve partially overwritten images.

Booting from the stick would eliminate the need to know account passwords unless the volumes are encrypted, then all bets are off. It would also work on PC, Mac and Linux.

That's how I'd do it anyway.

John and Laurel Porter rely on surprise inspections to keep track of their three children's laptops and cell phones.

"We just walk downstairs and say give me your phone. And with them, we'll look at their history, we take their iPod and see what they're listening to," John said.

"Just like I tell them now, I'm going to monitor your e-mails, I can monitor your texts. That's kind of the rule," Laurel said.

What awful parents. I know its cliche to say that "when I have kids, I won't be like that" but being that I'm probably less than a year from having a kid, I'm gonna say:

I'll never be like that.

I don't want to know every little detail. My goal is to simply raise them well enough to not be concerned. If I block their digital porn, they'll just go analog.

My biggest concern is them not having a good taste in music. I'm gonna listen to their ipod and be like "oh hell no, you're not listening to some autotuned bullshiat! GROUNDED UNTIL YOU LEARN TO ROCK"

If the kid didn't know that their computer was subject to inspection I'd agree 100%.

If the kid was told *up front* "Ok, we're giving you a computer and internet access, but we're going to be checking to make sure you're not abusing it," that's not too unreasonable.

Well I guess you'd hate to hear that the majority of the BDSM community carry on in secret and those nice neighbors next door could quite well be the leaders of the local BDSM club and show up in full uniform every other Saturday. I'll spare you on the details of "full uniform".

TwistedFark: These systems are all jokes. Each one relies upon a certain threshold in it's detection algorithm that the more you open it to try and "catch more porn" you also will have about a 50% false positive rate.

Luddite parents should just learn how to type *.jpg into the search box on the windows pc and switch the view to large tiles or thumbnails. It's juts as effective and ITS FREE.

Also, most modern browsers have some sort of "secure surfing" feature that would completely negate the usefulness of this feature. Trust me, the first time you bust your little Porn connoisseur with cheap ass tactics like this will probably be the last time, and it won't be because little billy has stopped surfing for naughty shemales.

But then the goody-goody parents would have to see the porn. This will tell them "Yep, your kid is heathen" and they won't have to see the godforsaken naked people.

What better way to keep your porn fresh? I mean, what could be more embarrassing than to have your teenage son come into the bedroom while you're surfing and catch you with old, outdated porn? Now, by tracking what he's surfing, I can keep track of the latest trends. Lactating nuns, men who used to be women who used to be men, New Guinean lawn-dart piercing parties, all of these I would have missed out on if it weren't for Porn Stick!

To defeat this particular device disable USB ports in the registry, keep a .reg file to roll it back when you need USB devises. Google is your friend.

Use VMware or hypervisor to do your porn surfing in a VM then delete regularly with a file shredder.

If you are really on the ball use VM inside truecrypt, I haven't tried that trick yet :o) At a minimum keep the stuff you save in a truecrypt drive.

If you aren't that technical use windows encryption and bury that folder deep inside system32

For linux users ask a linux guru

Do not keep any porn on your iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Ipod or a google based computer, or any system where you don't have admin access.

That should take care of the nosy wife with the "I want a divorce, the house, the car, alimony, child support and you pay the mortgage on my house, the note on my car etc..." problem. IF you are surfing kiddie porn and the FBI gets a hold of ya, I got nothin' for ya.

It's also more of the CSI effect, I think. "You mean you can't go through this 1TB drive and find every single picture involving nekkid breasts, even the deleted ones and the ones he encrypted, while I stand here and watch? Why don't you have what Abby has?"

Um, because while I have the fancy-named software, I have to write the scripts to support what you're looking for, plus sort through 250,000 images (hashing is great, but if you've got someone who does homegrown on the work computer and it's against the AUP...doesn't do as much), plus write the report that will not only stand up in court (when he sues you for wrongful dismissal) but also be readable by managers. Oh, and let's not even mention the fact that you have vetoed the workstation that would speed up the processing for the last three fiscal years...

\Why do guys start drooling when I tell them I look at other people's porn for a living?

I think when my daughter gets to that age, I'll just.... you know.... TALK to her. Policing her computer for porn just says "I do not trust you." Truly the way to build a good relationship and definitely the best way to prepare her for the adult world.

Fortunately I have 6.5 weeks shy of 13 years to worry about that. Unfortunately technology will change a assmonkeyton between now and then.
