They are all playing characters. They are entertainers and actors.
2003-07-01 02:53:47 PM
What did they do? Read the Fark comments?
2003-07-01 02:54:01 PM
How on earth could a columne about this subject not mention Michael Moore as the epitome of this bs?
2003-07-01 02:54:02 PM
Why was Michael Moore not on that list?
2003-07-01 02:54:34 PM
And no where is this more evident than on the Fark forums. However, this is not a new development, nor a new low. Politics has always been name calling and petty slander.

A political argument where you don't see President Bush referred to as an "idiot" or have people say they "hate" Democrats would be an evolution, not a return to more civil times.
2003-07-01 02:54:43 PM

large chunks of the public like to watch them...and the likes of Bill O' Reilly dont actually debate, they just put on a show where Bill always wins, and if Bill loses, he still wins with some incoherant and stupid comment made to make him look smug...
2003-07-01 02:54:55 PM
I believe this thread already has over 250 comments...just look a bit down today's page
2003-07-01 02:54:58 PM
and they're all very rich off of whipping all of us into a frenzy. don't believe any of them.
2003-07-01 02:54:58 PM
Wow. What a one sided view point. Guess why this was in the opinion section.
2003-07-01 02:55:06 PM
BamaTide - because no one takes him seriously. At least a few people take the others seriously.
2003-07-01 02:55:17 PM
Yes, yes, and yes. Neil Postman laid it out about ten years ago in Amusing Ourselves To Death, and his comments on the disintegration of public discourse are more relevant now than they were when he wrote them.

Everyone: STOP LISTENING TO THESE PEOPLE. This column is right on the money.
2003-07-01 02:55:35 PM
It's absolutely true. Civilized discourse regarding socio-political issues has ceased to be.
2003-07-01 02:55:47 PM
Coulter wrote that "liberals" were "seething with frustration at the success of the war in Iraq."

Success? maybe she should take a little visit to Iraq and see what a "success" it is.

Coulter concludes: "If Americans were lied to, they were lied to by liberals who warned that we would be annihilated if we attacked Iraq."

What planet is she from? Clearly Coulter is nuttier than a toddler's turd after Halloween. Annihilated indeed.

Flame Factor 5.

Mr. Sulu, engage.

2003-07-01 02:56:44 PM

Unfortunately, the people who watch them can't understand that.
2003-07-01 02:57:19 PM
"The likes of Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and Al Franken have brought public debate in America to a new low"

Hmm, that headline needs some work; lemme fix it:

"The likes of most Farkers about to post something in this thread regarding the three above mentioned people will bring public debate in America to a new low"
Much better !

2003-07-01 02:57:46 PM
elypse Mr. Sulu had better engage the time machine as well.
2003-07-01 02:57:54 PM
Ann Coulter, I'd Hit It
2003-07-01 02:58:59 PM
EatHam See that's the joke. Just wouldn't be as fun with Kirk there.

My list from most childish to most mature goes like this:

1) Ann Coulter (Childish)
2) Al Franken
3) Bill O'Reilly
4) Molly Ivins (Mature)
2003-07-01 03:00:20 PM
Is public discourse something that goes in cycles between total civility and total asshattery, much like major league baseball cycles between offensive output and masterful pitching?
2003-07-01 03:01:18 PM
The 'debate' was well worth watching, but given that Franken and O'Reilly are almost caricatures of the left and right it wasn't like there was any intellectual depth to it.

What the hell happened to old-fashioned conservatism (you know, the smart kind)? I can't stand O'Reilly... and while I think Franken's one of the funniest comedians left I have a hard time buying his political arguments. Molly Ivins was the only one there that sounded interesting, and she couldn't get a word in edgewise.
2003-07-01 03:02:04 PM
Ann Coulter has a smokin hot little body though....
2003-07-01 03:02:05 PM
The first thing we do, kill all the politicians.
2003-07-01 03:02:17 PM
How do you write a book about liars and call it a fair viewpoint on the right? liars are everywhere, and in order to truly be fair you have to examine the lie and the liar together throughout all of society and the context of the lie within society. Writing a book like mr Franken did is nothing more than an extravagant way of saying hey look at me I hate conservatives, I'm a super liberal and all the other liberals should like me for it. well maybe he'll succeed and the other liberals will like him, but will he get respect as a reputable political analyst? I doubt it. He'll probably just be seen as a washed up ex snl writer who's still bitter about "stuart saves his family"...
2003-07-01 03:02:32 PM
I think Extreme left or right leanings are dangerous. What am i if i just want the government to quit trying to step on my genitals?
2003-07-01 03:02:34 PM
They put Franken in the same category as COULTER???
2003-07-01 03:02:47 PM
Welcome to the Fark Political Debate System! Please choose your response below:

1) half-literate rant riddled with mis-spellings and juvenille profanity designed to masquerade lack of familiarity with subject

2) automatic villification of poster as a reactionary with optional unintentionally ironic misty eyed lament about how no one thinks things through before posting

3) knee jerk retort citing erroneous political red herring from oposition that somehow magically negates wrongdoing of current political subject

4) impassioned and rational plea pointing out how both political parties are irreperably broken, and neither party is qualified to recieve trust and/or campaign contributions (this will be completely ignored by 99% of message board readers as it is even handed and therefore no fun, since it points out the futility of their childish sniping)

5) respond to well thought out question with totally un-related question, and pat self on back for pointing out hypocrisy of opposing side

6) realize that party affiliations don't matter because the message board has shown that the world is full of childish buttpipes who are more concerned with trying to make people look foolish instead of broadening their political horizon, so you might as well stab your eyes out with hot dogs so you don't have to see the ever-increasing downward spiral of modern civilization
2003-07-01 03:03:15 PM
Man.. the leftist fark mods are really jacking off on the queue today aren't they? Maybe they should just admit that they have a hard-on for Ann Coulter and get on with their lives.

2003-07-01 03:03:47 PM

...and that's different than any of the crap that Ann Coulter puts out how??
2003-07-01 03:04:28 PM
2003-07-01 03:05:07 PM
Okay this writer is a moron.

How can you start an article talking about two Senators debating topics which matter to the public good of the nation, and compare that to two entertainers dicussing their book deals??????

Its like comparing Apples and dog crap!
2003-07-01 03:05:10 PM
throw in Katie Couric, and watch the hillarity ensue...
2003-07-01 03:05:40 PM
infinitejest, finally someone else who's read that book.

Excellent book and so very true.
2003-07-01 03:05:53 PM
That's actually hilarious. Although I've never thought much of O'Reilly/Coulter/whomever, I guess these really are new lows. An they are lows perfectly captured by the "schoolyard" analogy.

Franken taunted O'Reilly for claiming that O'Reilly received an award that he didn't receive, which led to a shouting match. O'Reilly, who said earlier that he eschews name-calling, then called Franken an idiot.

The conversation plummeted further downhill, as O'Reilly screamed "Shut up!" Panel moderator Pat Schroeder, a former U.S. senator, chimed in weakly at times but failed to turn the event from its path of destruction.
2003-07-01 03:06:17 PM
What? No mention of Dennis Miller! LIBERAL BIAS!!!
2003-07-01 03:06:25 PM
Ann Coulter would mount Adolf Hitler's rotting corpse, if she could find it.

Anyone else notice that this is about three weeks old?
2003-07-01 03:07:10 PM
KingVolcano: You forgot 7) Fark the debate, find a semi-attractive woman involved in the story and say you'd hit it. (Ann Coulter? Her thing probably has teeth.)
2003-07-01 03:07:22 PM
Absolutely. I've actually taken to watching BBC World on PBS and reading BBC's website for news for just this reason.

Everything in the US is about appealing to a particular demographic. There is no liberal/conservative media, just media corps who know their demographic, the advertizers that target them and the content, guests and topics that will keep that demographic watching and buying.

The US news media and political forums are right up there with day-time talk shows for redeemable content.
2003-07-01 03:07:45 PM
Good thing idiotic debates don't ever happen here on Fark
2003-07-01 03:09:58 PM
Whatever happened to manners and civility?

"Decency is something your grandmother taught you"
2003-07-01 03:10:03 PM
Now, I don't know if politcal discourse has reached a new low, per se. I mean, who hasn't heard of the tales from the early days of the republic where one senator or representative would lay into a fellow congressman with a cane, challenge them to a duel, spout off on the floor of the House, etc.?

Perhaps in this day and age, we just get to see how we've always behaved, but it's magnified and more widely distributed.

I will say that very few in public service can write as well as many political leaders did before the age of television, however...
2003-07-01 03:10:37 PM
Franken and O'Reilly are almost caricatures of the left and right it wasn't like there was any intellectual depth to it.

I think the sad part is that many don't get that they are only caricatures

How do you write a book about liars and call it a fair viewpoint on the right?

I think many people also forget that Al Franken is a bit over the top and only a humorist
2003-07-01 03:10:45 PM
I dunno, I watched that c-span show, and I didn't really think it was *that* hostile. Yeah, Franken and O'Reilly are like little kids, but like the poster above said, they're entertainers, not politicians.

Franken was definitely being immature about it, but he was making a valid point, one which O'Reilly absolutely refused to acknowledge.
