"WW2 was not about 'liberating' the French, either. It was about us realizing that sitting on our arses doing nothing wasn't going to stop Hitler from devouring the world."

Wow, you are an idiot. So WWII was about the US realizing sitting on it's arses wouldn't get anything done. Hmm, how very relevant to a recent situation. Can someone help me figure it out? I know it sounds so familiar,......

Let see:

France help us with the Revolutionary War-

We save their a$$es in WW1 and WW2.

They helped get things moving in Vietnamn.

I think 3 for 1 is a fair exchange. NOT!

It's still easily faked. The flag poles on the right and left could have EASILY been added with photoshop. And the large picture reveals the bush at the bottom obscuring the empty flagpole in the center. However, you seem to forget that he could have just taken a picture of an empty flagpole.

Also, the other thing that bothers me is WHY WAS THE UNITED STATES FLAG IN THE MIDDLE?
The middle pole is generally reserved for the home country's flag (ie, the french flag)--it doesn't make sense for the United States flag to be in the middle.

So what I'm think is the guy probably just found a picture of an empty flagpole and added a british and french flag around it using photo shop.

It's that simple. I can't comprehend, even if this is a real picture, how this is relevant to U.S. and French relations or is an attesting to French sentiment towards the United States.

That link that FortKnox had put up about the statue of liberty is BS (no offense FortKnoX). It had the sort of the right ideas, but the wrong morals. It was callin the U.S. all sorts of Shiat. I say we send the statue of liberty back (with a big bomb attached to it)and build our own.

I heard Chiraq could have a chance at the Nobel Peace prize, which is insane, seeing as he opposed the removal of a dictator who it is confirmed killed millions of his own people, not to mention countless Iranians, Kuwaities, and Americans.

Heh. You really make me laugh with your regurgitation of American propaganda.

To Clarify: Chiraq was not against removing Saddam; he simply wanted to exhaust all peaceful and diplomatic solutions before going to war. Hence, Peace prize.

Jeez you people are sheep.

i am an idiot? Hah, very funny. Comparing Hussein to hitler is cute, but bs. Hitler had already conquered half of Europe and was a clear and present danger to the U.S. by the time we entered the war.
Iraq had a laughable military and WMDs which we still have yet to find. There's no comparison.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the memorials in France resting on American soil? If that is true, then the American flag goes in the middle.

It may have started thus, but as the war got closer, France took the position of opposing any UN resolution that approved the use of force. It wasn't a matter of peace before war, it was a matter of no war at all, and it came across as a big Baise-toi to the Americans.

Let's get this straight.

American politicians and some stunned farkers have been biatching and bad mouthing France, ever since they were told "Homey don't play dat game" when the U.S. invaded Iraq. Pulling stunts like renaming French Fries, pouring out French wine, and other equally retarded stunts. And now you don't like it when it happens to you..

Aaaaawwwwwww....pwoo babbbbiieees...Awwwwww....fweel bettta now?

Suck it up, get used to it and STFU!

BTW, if you hate Wisconsin so much (per profile) why are you getting edcumacated here? You should get down to Summerfest ( biggest music festival in the world) this week. I bet you'd have fun.

As far as I can tell the pole in the middle has always been empty. The Sherwood Rangers memorial is not that old, only going back to 1993.

Fark It
This memorial is on property belonging to the city of Bayeux, as a sort of "Thank You" to the British/Canadian soldiers who liberated their city. I would not expect to find an American flag at a memorial for British/Canadian Soldiers.

My guess is that the pictures are real enough, but the contents have been selectively photographed to make a point (and start flame wars).

Picture 1 - Part of a row of flags. How many? At least four, maybe more. As it happens, there's a gap between the British and French flags. This may have been occupied by the American flag, or maybe the American flag is out of shot to the right or left.

Picture 2 - Inspired by the flagpole shot, let's group the pins, and take a photograph that doesn't include the US flag, or just temporarily remove it from the display.

Picture 3 - same technique as picture 2.

Result: a lot of folk with short fuses went bang. After all, it's getting near July 4th.

Trolling takes many forms.....

Regards

koob : ~we'd never do anything like desecrate a grave here~

As far as I know the national cemeteries are vandal free, however, what you do at night is your business.

I would like to see the graves moved back here so their families would be able to visit them. Seems like the families they died trying to help don't really care one way or the other.

2003-07-01 03:02:59 PM
ah, guess ill go ahead and end this flamewar...

A) this is a war memorial at D-Day where British and Canadians fought at, therefore, there shouldnt be an American flag, just like there shouldnt be a British & Canadian flag at Omaha...

B) The middle pole, unless by some tradition should remain empty, if anything should have the Canadian flag on it, but the number of circumstances is too great for the author of the article to truly convince me or anybody else that truly...an American flag was supposed to be there and was purposely taken down by the French...

C) again, refer to A, thats a gift shop, even if it wasnt at the same site and at a US war memorial, the circumstances are too great, refer to B

in any case, this is BS, plain & simple

NO, I told you, that's illegal...

It's cheap :) Minnesota State colleges are expensive as all hell. I don't hate Wisconsin as much as I let on actually, just Packers fans.

I'm actually going to see Radiohead in concert this August in Sconi, never been to Summerfest, you're probably right though.

On a side note, I realize the irony that I'm a conservative and a Radiohead fan if anyone was going to point it out.

country_boy, one day we'll all grow up anbd not have this petty bickering. i think its good the families can go to where their loved ones died. even if it is in france.

girly girl, my girlfriend thinks its nice, but i'm not impressed with it. why do we have to be so judgemental about whose ass we grab??

What millions marched in America? Where?

How can you misquote me so sloppily when my exact words are on the same page? "Millions marched all over the planet".

Sorry, I have to call bullshiat on the millions.

Well, there have been estimates of 500,000 in NYC. I asked a cop on the street corner and he said, "hundreds of thousands". The New York Times ran an incredible photo on the front page. I'd post it if I could find it. The organizers estimate 10 million world-wide.

You said Americans didn't support the war when they, in fact, by a majority did.

Maybe, I've read the polls. But maybe not. Most of those people were totally misinformed by the Bush Administration. Remember when Powell stated that Al Qaeda and Hussein were partnered? I didn't know anybody that supported it. I certainly don't know anybody that demonstrated in support of it.

And, sorry, if I were to remove the ignorant muslims who have been spoon fed "Death to America" all their lives you have a miniscule demonstration world-wide.

Most of the demonstrations occured in western democracies, including Israel. You really have a slanted view. Too much FauxNews, I presume.

Btw, just so you know, all that FauxNews favoritism was a favor for the FCC give away. Jingoism is for idiot automotons. Always has been, always will.

2003-07-01 03:09:23 PM
Stoke: sorry, but I'm going to have to support pontechango on this one. At least where I lived, the pro-war and anti-war demonstrators were evenly split.

Actually it's a museum dedicated to the invasion of Normany, not to landings at Sword, Gold & Juno.

"Heres a thought from a swede... Just mail the damn museum and ask them if its true?"

Good solotion. Problem is that it would take too long to get a response and this thread will be off Fark by the time it gets here.

"P.s Soviet won WWII."

That's right, the Russians dropped those nukes on Japan and blamed it all on America.

Also, I'm having a little trouble remembering... was that Russian steel all their tanks and guns were made from or was it American?

obvious...though after losing more people than anyone could imagine...

the only country that could defeat a super-military-maniacal-imperialist-country was a super-military-maniacal-imperialist-country...

the US & Britain did hamper the German economy & central transportation systems though, which slowed the flow of manpower & equipment to the Russian front greatly, not to mention the godly-important Ploesti oilfields...

Way to confuse "the use of force" with a pre-planned United States OCCUPATION. I put my money on coercive inspections. The ideology of Wolfowitz is falling apart in Iraq.

I see no lock visible on the display case, maybe it was PS'd out too ;-) It looks more like a simple picture frame with an easily removable cork backing, but I could be wrong ... could you?

Face it, there is no definitive proof either way, but your need to pretend otherwise is entertaining nonetheless.

Personally, who cares? France is so insignificant of a country that the only way they draw attention is to piss people off. Kind of like that kid with ADD in the back of class....

stoke : Ill refresh your memory, 10% of their tanks and steel came from the U.S.

And no, the war crime of nukeing two towns full of innocent civilians was an american idea.

But crushing the German army and taking Berlin, that was Russia....

The Left says that we owe our existance to the French for their "help" during the Revolutionary War. Well, WWI was payback, WWII put us one up, and the Marshall Plan and the Cold War make the French our biatches.
