If I was a Meter Maid (or whatever the male-equivalent would be) I would definitely hit the wealthy areas. I'm sure you get better tips (**cough** bribes **cough**) from the people that drive the Lexuses and Hummers. Of course, if you are a local politician, you wouldn't want the rich folk pissed off at you because of stupid traffic tickets, so I can understand the reasoning behind all this. Pissed off campaign donors = no re-election.

Good old San Diego (full disclaimer: I live there). Where the rich can get away with anything, and the poor get screwed. Oh wait, that's pretty much anywhere in this country.

2003-07-01 02:04:29 PM
I think they have the policy around here. When I lived in a slightly cheaper area people got ticketed for being 1 minute over the limit, now that I live in a richer area people don't even get ticketed for parking in front of hydrants or no parking at any time spots.

2003-07-01 02:08:58 PM
who is surprised?

if so, slap yourself awake...

2003-07-01 02:09:50 PM

scratch 'country' and replace with 'world', and I think youll be closer to the truth...

What? The rich are keeping there money and the poor people pay for everything?

I've never heard of this!!!

/sarcasm, Duh.

2003-07-01 02:10:28 PM
PunkinDonuts I'd be willing to buy you a one way ticket to where ever you think you'll be better off.

Parking officers are among the lowest life forms on the planet.

I can't wait for the followup to this article where it's discovered the San Diego metermaids were told not only to avoid wealthy areas, but to sneak into Tiujana and ticket cars there as well.

Hint for anyone moving or planning a vacation to Boston: DO NOT HAVE A CAR HERE !!! Ticketing is rampant here, and I think the timers on the meters are on warp time. Besides, garages can cost you $25 a day and up. Oh, and don't get me started about the Big Dig, although you should check it out to see where your highway tax dollars have dissapeared to over the last 10 years. $15 billion dollars for about 15 miles of road. Amazing.

2003-07-01 02:12:48 PM
keep moving, nothing to see here. As usual, the poor must pay for the abuses of the rich. 200+ years and it's still the same.

I really thought this was from New York before I read the article.

2003-07-01 02:15:27 PM
Meter maids? There aren't any parking meters around here EXCEPT by the high priced financial centers, and government buildings. Of course, it's a pain to have to feed a meter when you're going to pay a speeding ticket, or so I expect.(never got a speeding ticket myself)

2003-07-01 02:15:52 PM
It doesn't matter for me. There have been soo many errors in the RMV's computer systems, they've lost all record of my tickets a couple times. Veerrry convienient for me I must say.

2003-07-01 02:17:20 PM
Yeah yeah yeah.. we all will scream and yell about this, but name one person who wouldn't rather be rich and not getting ticketed.

/Won't someone please think of the... wealthy?

2003-07-01 02:17:26 PM
When Al Neri gives you a parking ticket, you'd better pay attention. Right Barzini?

I don't understand the problem here. Rich people wouldn't pay the ticket anyway. They would get lawyer/go to court and fight it.

Why waste the meter-maids' time on tickets that won't get paid, when they can ticket the darkies and make a mint?

2003-07-01 02:19:47 PM
Laws are supposed to be fair. Fixed monetary fines are the most unfair of all.

To a rich fart, a $50 ticket is nothing, chickenfeed. Yet, because most rich folks are greedy asshats, they take it personally when you take even a tiny bit of money from them. The same ticket is a big deal financially to someone who actually works for a living, but he'll pay it because his time spent to fight it is very valuable.

To be perfectly fair, parking fines should be tied to the model of vehicle, with the more expensive being changed more. Example: A low-end Toyota gets a $10 fine, an Olds, Buick gets a $100 fine, an SUV gets $1000 fine, a Lexus, Bimmer or Benz owner has to pay $10,000!

Oh yes, if you are an incosiderate asshat who owns one of those disgusting Benz SUVs or Lincoln Navigators, you pay $15,000!

PunkinDonuts: Good old San Diego (full disclaimer: I live there)

Peh, I can't even figure out when I'm supposed to put the money in the meter and when I'm not. Reading those damn stickers (which are usually partially peeled off anyway) is a pain in the butt especially when I'm in a hurry.

Far easier to throw a quarter in it and say to hell with it. Besides, everyone knows that for periods of under 3 hours, it's far cheaper to park at horton.

2003-07-01 02:21:23 PM
Huh. I just read a post in the Ann Coulter thread that "class warfare" was a myth of the left. Veery Eenteeresting...

2003-07-01 02:22:38 PM
Where the rich can get away with anything, and the poor get screwed.

The "rich can get away with everything" part applies, but logically speaking the poor aren't getting screwed at all.

If you break the law, you have to pay the consequences. If someone else gets off, there is no difference in the fact that you broke the law and have to pay.

I may be being nit-picky, but this is the problem with a lot of the "poor are getting screwed" arguments.

Yes, there are times when the poor do get screwed (i.e. if there is an imbalance in the number of wrongful convictions or fines).... but this is not one of them.

2003-07-01 02:23:21 PM
Hands up who is suprised by this. No one? Good.

2003-07-01 02:25:55 PM
I like the part at the end that states an investigation like this hasn't been conducted since 1998. 5 freakin' years. Big WHOOP! Do you want a cookie for that San Diego? If that investigation's findings and resulting guidelines didn't last for any long period of time, what makes you think this investigation will? For what other reason do Parking Enforcement officers exist than to make money?

If only there was a little machine we could use to short-circuit their ticket machine so it wouldn't print or print out F-you meter maid

2003-07-01 02:29:29 PM
Day_old_dutchie why are you and others so fixated on punishing the wealthy? The system you proposed would be completely draconian and undemocratic. Why not charge different amounts for different religions. After all, some religions have more money than others...

The TRUE democratic thing is to charge ONE fee/fine, no matter what your car, skin color, etc, happen to be. THAT is what we do here in America.

Oh, sorry, I make more money than you. Whose fault is that? Mine? No. Yours. Suck it up and pay the parking fine, po'boy.

2003-07-01 02:31:01 PM
They won't ticket illegally parked churchgoers, either. At least not here in Raleighwood.

2003-07-01 02:31:39 PM
Yeah, kill all the rich people!

Seriously tho, when I went to school in La Jolla I got a ticket for not cramping my freakin wheels.

And whoever had the idea of grading tickets by car type: We have a thing called sales tax. I paid more for my expensive car. Go screw.

2003-07-01 02:31:42 PM
Yeah, the cost/benefit for the city of ticketing rich folks has gotta be way lower, because so many of them are willing to fight it and waste the city's money.

2003-07-01 02:33:33 PM
I'm sure San Diego would make allot more money ticketing violators in all those loading zone, cab stands and no parking zones that exist in wealthy neighborhoods. Come to think of it, I've never seen one wealthy farker feed the meter in front of his house in the cul-de-sac.

2003-07-01 02:33:58 PM
Speaking of po' boys, around here they cost 8 dollars. wtf?

So, the wealthy don't work for a living? They just sit on their ass and collect dividend checks? Bullshiat you little peon. How do you think they made their money? Granted, a SMALL percentage of the wealthy inherited their money but most have made it on their own by working hard their entire life. Get off your ass, get a job, and stop farking complaining.

2003-07-01 02:34:48 PM
Day_Old_Dutchie good idea ! Unfortunately the automative industries would like to kill you for suggesting this..but I agree with you, let the fine be proportional to the average local market value of the offending car.

About the richies not paying..no wonder, that's true all over the world and it's more true in USA.

2003-07-01 02:35:26 PM
Downstairs what part of the article did you not read?...They were told not to ticket the upscale areas.....If you break the law it does not mean you have to pay the consequence it just means you have to have access to large amounts of cash and influence.

2003-07-01 02:37:54 PM
Who thinks it would be more trouble than it's worth to calculate the market value of every car that gets a parking ticket?

"um, it says here you have the 6-disc CD changer, that's another 500 bucks.."

2003-07-01 02:40:04 PM
HELLO! Which area or neighborhood has more parking meters and no parking zones? The white-bread suburbs, or Johnny Afro-Hood?

a----DUH.

Not only that, but as you pointed out before those of us with expensive cars already paid our dues. We paid sales tax AND a luxury tax (on certain vehicles). Why should I be forced to pay $500 for the same offense as a person with a Kia who pays $50? It's not logical.

2003-07-01 02:40:49 PM
Okay kids, thinking caps on.
Why are there parking meters?
To make money?
To give meter maids something to do?
To limit the time that vehicles park at a single location, for the benefit of retailers and other businesses located near the meter?
dingdingding.
Who do retailers want parking in those spaces? Rich people.

2003-07-01 02:40:54 PM
Rich people are teh sux.

2003-07-01 02:40:58 PM
San Diego farker as well, here. I think it's gotta be a cost/benefit thing, that rich people fight more often (or get their lawyers to do it for them). Or maybe they get vindictive. OTOH, what are poor people going to do?

Quick, who was the political philosopher who suggested all fines be priced as a percentage of income? (I think it was Locke?)

2003-07-01 02:42:07 PM
My favorite story about my rich aunt:

She's giving us a ride to the train station and pulls up right in front of the main entrance and parks her Benz right under a "No Parking" sign with a cop standing next to it.

Cop - Excuse me, you can't park there.
Auntie - I'm just going to be a couple minutes.
Cop - If you don't move your car immediatly it will be ticketed and towed.
Auntie - Thanks, I'll send someone to pick it up later.

For us it's a punishment, for her - valet parking...

Loki see loki do: e) All of the above.

Am I right?

Sorry crazyeddie but I can't tell you how many times I have heard these great stories about how some "ambitious" hard workin' guy somehow managed to start a business and he worked hard and the business flourished and he doesn't understand why everyone else can't do the same thing and then you ask how he started his great business and EVERYTIME its some uncle or dad or grandparent who gave him a loan of ten thousand bucks to get things started. The wealthy get help from the wealthy and the poor, well the poor have to pay the rent.

2003-07-01 02:48:56 PM
Hello_Kthullu Then perhaps you could broker me a one way ticket to a CEO position?

2003-07-01 02:49:52 PM
Well, the rich people can easily afford the fine, so it won't be any sort of deterrent. The meter maids should scratch the ticket details into the paintwork instead.

2003-07-01 02:50:56 PM
And I'll have to agree, wealthy San Diego contains MANY lawyers...

2003-07-01 02:51:53 PM
It's nice to see Meter Maids sticking up for the little guy.

2003-07-01 02:52:27 PM
I don't see any reason for ticketing the more affluent people. They're already paying taxes.

2003-07-01 02:54:58 PM
What a bunch poor whining pussies. Stop biatching. The rich should be allowed to slide every now and then. For christ sake they get taxed like there living in the UK. Hell the rich probably paid for the goddamn meters and for that metermaid to waddle around and check them. shiat if you were making 100K + and losing half to uncle sam you would feel entitled to some perks. Get a better job and stop farking crying you pleebs.

Interesting. I know of 3 very wealthy people who grew up incredibly poor, worked hard, and are now worth millions. 3 seperate stories about 3 completely different types of businesses/work environments. So, it's not EVERYTIME.

Oh, and by the way, someone isn't wealthy if they have 10 grand to loan. They're just good with money. They're wealthy if they have 100 grand to loan out.

2003-07-01 02:57:05 PM
Best way to fight this?

1. Chew gum.
2. Stick gum in money slot.
3. Jam dime in money slot.
4. Attach "Out of order" sign on meter.
