Poster is on crack. Funny as hell, though.
2003-07-01 09:34:15 AM
Heh, I like that headline :)

2003-07-01 09:49:45 AM
It took the liberals years and years and 50,000 plus dead Americans to create their quagmire, and now the Bush administration has now equaled the liberal quagmire in only weeks and 200 plus dead Americans. And you of the simple mind have the audacity to call them dumb.
2003-07-01 10:00:29 AM
Well Penrod , seeing as how the American presence in Viet Nam started with that great liberal Eisenhower...

And I think that losing soldiers at a rate of one a day after combat operations have ceased does lend itself to qualifying as a "quagmire".

2003-07-01 10:03:56 AM

Maybe I'm missing your point. How are the Republicans left out of your version of Viet Nam?
2003-07-01 10:35:12 AM

damn, that movie sucked, at least if they had the hulk say that classic line it would have been worthwhile.
2003-07-01 10:43:32 AM
interesting to note how rumnmy says that those forces against us are "foreign terrorists" or "functioning much more like terrorists."

yer either with us or aginn us....

You simple ones are lucky today, usually I dont have time to check back on my contributions. Here is a short answer to the quagmire thing. With in hours of the death of JFK (who was not a great liberal) the Great Liberal LBJ committed the United States to the kindly Liberal war plan of Graduated Pressure . This great liberal idea was to persuade the North Vietnamese to give up rather than defeat them. I do not have time to give you a history lesson, however I will give you a reference if you dare to learn. Every Man A Tiger by Tom Clancy with General Chuck Horner(ret.) The General shares many of my opinions but he is a much more articulate and respected source. If the United States had followed a conservative War Plan Like George Patton, George Bush. North Vietnam would have been defeated in quick order and uncounted lives on both sides would have been saved. It was Sadamns most fervent wish that the U.S of A. would follow the Liberal war Plan of LBJ, to bad for him. over and out.

grrrrrrr, Quagmire BAD!!

those poll results would give me hope in america...if I actually believed that polls are at all an accurate picture of feelings and beliefs country wide.

Nevermind 3horn, I just read your bio. You sign your posts because you are lazy.

Penrod-What the hell is wrong with you and why must ALL of "contributions" have the word Liberal in them? You are a one-trick pony and it's getting old.
2003-07-01 12:24:39 PM
haha.. thanks headline-person.

It's heartening to see support for this war waning. Look: taking out Saddam has been big on the neo-con agenda since Bush I--that's not an opinion, that's a fact...Google PNAC (Project for a New American Century) and do some reading if you disagree--and they finally were able to make it happen. Good for them, they had a vision and are enacting it.

Problem is, they wrapped it up in events and causes that were hijacked to retroactively justify long-standing goals. Supposed "liberals" are not distorting the issue by pointing out that US citizens were directly mislead by this administration into supporting a war effort. The Bush administration invalidated any pre-existing, justifiable reasons for military action against Iraq when THEY made it about imaginary reasons (WMDs, etc.) and lied to us about the dangers posed. That is the real quagmire. We have been lied to, we are being lied to, and we will continue to be lied to as long as we allow this administration to get away with it.

Good grief! 1st France, then Ann Coulter, now Rumsfeld! Isn't there a limit on how many flame-war-inducing posts we can have in a day?

Thank you for killing what little interest I had left in the film. Really, thanks. I'll save my money for LXG.

And great headline, BTW.
2003-07-01 03:28:41 PM
stupid ass "Bush-Bush Administration" flamewar headline.

get back to work assholes...
2003-07-01 03:30:12 PM
Penrod, you are correct in identifying LBJ as the main culprit behind the Vietnam War. Sadly, the war basically negates all the good he did in terms of Civil Rights.

To Rumsfeld I must say: "You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The first, and most well known, blunder is never get involved in a land war in Asia."
2003-07-01 03:31:17 PM
Rumsfeld's quite right, it's nothing like Vietnam. Nowhere near as much foliage.

"You must be this tall to ride the Quagmire"
2003-07-01 03:32:00 PM

OMG I just read from beginning of thread, and:

2003-07-01 10:56:10 AM Penrod
"I do not have time to give you a history lesson, however I will give you a reference if you dare to learn. Every Man A Tiger by Tom Clancy..."

2003-07-01 03:32:09 PM
There are so many cartoons where press people are saying 'Is it Vietnam yet?' hoping it is, and wondering if it is, and it isn't," Rumsfeld told reporters at a Pentagon press briefing. "It's a different time, it's a different era, it's a different place."

It's the same result.

I wouldn't say quagmire..I'll go with morass
2003-07-01 03:32:46 PM
Poor Rummy. He looks more like Reagan every time I see him. Pretty soon his shoulderblades will be permanently higher than his neck. Great headline, by the way.
2003-07-01 03:33:39 PM
"The quagmire" is an anagram of
"Meet Iraq, hug."

2003-07-01 03:35:06 PM
At least he's got a point. QUAGMIRE! and ANOTHER VIETNAM! have come up with every single American engagement of any sort since Vietnam. You'd think the press would learn that there's a pretty big area between "perfect" and "quagmire". Sometimes things are just f'ing difficult.
2003-07-01 03:36:59 PM
WTF is up with Penrod. I love asshats like him who presume this incredible omniscience with regard to the past based on the fact that they have now had almost 40 years to reflect on the decisions that were made and to read crap from Tom Clancy in order to throw some techno-jargon around that they dont really understand. Suddenly that makes them foreign policy experts. Of course, Penrod forgets or probably doesnt know that in 1962, unlike the present, the United States was not the only super power. Also, the Johnson Administration had legitimate concerns that China, with a million man standing army and nuclear capability, may not take to kindly to a blitzkrieg rolling through a country to it's immediate south. Also the containment doctrine, which Johnson was implementing, was embraced not only by Democrats, but also Republicans.

But analysis and reason never gets in the way of a good fascist rant, so screed on Penrod, screed on. No one with half a brain in paying any attention anyway.

If we had only taken the southern half of Iraq then designated an imaginary line that we couldn't cross, and Iraq was directly touching a cold war enemy who could funnel unlimited modern weapons and arms to it whilst we tried to fight a defensive war for the southern part, then yes, this would be like Vietnam, minus the jungle/swamp/mountain terrain which made the movement of heavy armor impossible and let guerrillas conduct operations almost anywhere in the country on foot or in canoes.
2003-07-01 03:38:44 PM

We're still waiting for Nixon's secret plan to end the war in Vietnam.
2003-07-01 03:39:07 PM
I'm the king of boggle, there is none higher. I gets 11 points for the word 'quagmire'.

Yeah, don't call it a quagmire. Wait until we've been there a couple of years, then call it a quagmire.

Anybody seen any weapons of mass distruction?

2003-07-01 03:44:48 PM
Rummy didnt even know what a quagmire was during the press conference the other day
2003-07-01 03:44:58 PM
It's not a "quagmire"! He just has no idea how long it will take and how many people will die.

And the more Iraqs rounded up, make more Iraqs pissed at the US.
Which makes more attacks against the US.
Which makes the US round up more Iraqs.
Wash, Rinse, repeat. (see Israel for detailed instructions)

quagmire a difficult, precarious, or entrapping position

No, see THIS is fun and easy! (maybe Rummy doesn't own a dictionary)
