And vitamin D comes mostly from the sun. So get some sun kids and go easy on the sunscreen. In fact you don't really need it unless you plan on being outside for a long time. The diseases from too little vitamin D are worse and much more common than skin cancer.

Oddly enough, low D levels caused my wife to have a seizure. Vitamin D is apparently important to the brain.

More common than rickets? Yes.

More common than low bone density? Probably not.

Higher overall cost/risk to the population of serious negative consequences from skin cancer than from low bone density? Most likely, no.

*Everybody* knows a story about a "grandma who fell over, broke her hip and died," and it's not always a particularly-old "grandma," either. We could dramatically lower the "broke her hip" risk, and likely the "fell over" risk, and thus most certainly the "and died" risk, if we did a better job of making sure everyone (particularly women, but men, too) got their vitamin D and calcium.

But nooooooo, we have "wear pink for breast cancer" month, to "raise awareness" of something well known to the care provider(s) of anyone who is even getting basic health care -- and the risk of which is already wildly overestimated by the general population. We have "wear a red ribbon for AIDS" for something that, at least since the turn of the century, is no longer a giant scary mystery and ignored issue of a minority group -- and still generally impacts a relatively small segment of the population (in the US) and receives a disproportionate (now) amount of funding. Meanwhile, a frightening portion of the population is vitamin D deficient... even post-fracture. Wear a little less sun screen, take some vitamin D sometimes, get your calcium... particularly you, farkettes!

Sigh.

I am as pale as a goth kid. How could I possibly have vitamin D deficiency?! I'm a human and nearly devoid of pigmentation, there's nothing holding me back from making my own @#$%!! vitamin D!! But my vitamin D levels are so low I have to take prescription vitamin D pills.

I'll just blame it on the weather in the Pacific Northwest. We always say the rain causes everything in the Pacific Northwest: highest national book sales, gym memberships, coffee houses, microbrews, number of restaurant per capita, donations to NPR... you name it.

Did you actually read all of that link? Vitamin D helps prevent a shiatload of awful hard-to-treat cancers. In comparison, most skin cancers are relatively easy to treat.

You only need a few minutes in the sun to receive adequate amounts of D, but some people have the perception that any amount of sun is bad and many daily wear cosmetics now include sunscreen.

The actual number of minutes depends on your latitude and season of the year, but for most people, 15-30 minutes of sunlight a day is good for you

I'm in Seattle too, so I don't get a lot of sun this time of year. During the summer I was working outside all day, but was pretty good about sunscreen. This time of year there isn't much sun and I don't get outside that much anyway. I've been taking a vitamin D supplement for a few months now since my wife read some article about it in Outside magazine. Supposedly lots of studies are showing benefits to D and even many of the outdoorsy people they tested for the story had low levels of D. I figure it can't hurt, so why not...

/natural is better, but I'll take a pill too because I'm not always outside and it's not always sunny

Middle class children in the south of England are suffering from the '17th century disease' rickets as parents cover them in sunscreen and limit time outside in the sunshine, a leading doctor has warned.

The disease, caused by low levels of vitamin D generated in the body from sunshine and certain foods, had died out around 80 years ago but is now coming back.

Cases of rickets in children have occurred in northern England and Scotland where there are fewer months of the year with sufficient sunshine to obtain enough vitamin D but now doctors are seeing it on the South coast as well.

It is thought extensive use of sunscreen, children playing more time on computer games and TV rather than playing outside and a poor diet are to blame.



My doctor told me a while back to start taking 2000 I.U. of vitamin D a day. For a white guy with a family history of heart disease and stroke, it seems like cheap insurance to me.

UV-B still makes it through clouds/rain, although a complete cloud cover (like the huge thunderhead clouds in Florida that literally expand horizon to horizon) cuts exposure in half.

Anyone living north of 45 latitude (new window) should consider vitamin D supplements between the fall and spring equinox (more and more the closer you get to the winter solstice).

My Dr. put me on 2000 IU D3 (the preferred), but had to remind me that it does no good without supplementing the supplement with calcium. Made a world of difference - I'm now only a moderate NW zombie.

I think that's backwards--you need Vitamin D to properly metabolize calcium.

Here is what NIH says about vitamin D and calcium:

Vitamin D

The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, one can't form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the "active vitamin D"). This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. In this situation, the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton, which weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone.

You can get vitamin D in three ways: through the skin, from the diet, and from supplements. Vitamin D is formed naturally by the body after exposure to sunlight. Fifteen minutes in the sun a few times a week without sunscreen is plenty for many people to manufacture and store all of the vitamin D they need. Experts recommend a daily intake of between 400 and 600 IU (International Units) of vitamin D, which also can be obtained from supplements or vitamin D-rich foods such as egg yolks, saltwater fish, liver, and fortified milk. The Institute of Medicine recommends no more than 2,000 IU per day. However, sometimes doctors prescribe higher doses for people who are deficient in vitamin D.


Good thing I take my D supplement with a big glass of milk!
