Maybe it's different in the north, but the only reason I went to prom is because it felt like something I was "supposed" to do. But in general, it wasn't that big of a deal overall.

My senior year I went with a female friend instead of a "date," and that was waaaayyy less stressful and a bit more fun. But I don't regret, nor do I feel like I "missed out" on anything special. Especially because in college, the nerds are cool and as a nerd I got all kinds of great "experience" that was limited to the "cool kids" when I was in high school.

I got laid on prom night in the back of my dads Olds Cutlass. He would be proud.

Have it in your gym, ya spoiled little bastids.

If any of these landlords knew what be going on at the prom, they certainly wouldn't be renting it out to kids for their prom. The carpet would be soaked with puke and the furniture would be soaked with urine, saliva and cum.

Where are they getting all this money? Even the rich kids at my school (in "oil money" rich Texas) couldn't have afforded that.

not students, School boards are paying the 22K, which they bill back to the parents.

Actually you only need a graduating class of 440 at $50 a pop to pay for that

My graduating class was 475 pupils and my prom was held at the Intrepid Museum, I did not go.

Prom is the pinnacle of American consumerism considering, just how much does the average goer spend on vapid shiat for pretty much a popularity contest at the end.

Congratulations, you're the current leader in the "still the most bitter about prom" sweepstakes, but the thread is yet young and I'm sure you'll have some serious competition later on.

Renting a Mansion may be cheaper than.. say, renting a hotel ballroom.

I recall my date getting so drunk that she passed out at the hotel. I was semi to mostly sober. Every time I tried to gently nudge her awake I got a "ahhhhhh" noise from her inebriated self. So I just rented some "in hotel" porn and jacked off next to her. Best prom evar!

Hell, save even more money - forget the gowns and tuxes, limos and all that crap. A case of beer and a room or two at the Red Roof Inn is more fun! I mean the whole idea is to get buzzed and laid, right?

Meh. If the parents are able and/or stupid enough to shell out that kind of cash for their kids then let them. I spent a decent amount of money on my prom and 20 years later I do not remember much about it (though I do remember that it was a lot of fun). It is not that I was drunk or anything, but in the grand scheme of things it was just another dance for me.

Wanna talk about out of control proms? These are pics from a high school dance out in the Chicago area. These people in Arizona are nagging about a 22K room fee, how about a 75k DJ fee.

I'm pretty sure that prom tickets for whatever my HS did were around $100, and that was 10 years ago. Apart from not even bothering to ask any girl, knowing no good would come from trying, I didn't think any party was worth that much money. God knows how much most people added to the cost by renting limos and other crap.

Schools need to go back to simpler events in the gym like the guy in the article wanted.

We were just happy to have our proms at a hotel or some banquet hall. Instead of a structured party afterward, we were just happy to spend the next day drinking beer on the beach.

We also had to work for all the money it took to pay for it all.

I consider myself a gentleman, but thanks for the tip. I guess I was close though, I made sure to roll her over on her tummy so she didn't swallow her tongue. I just failed with the follow through.

Never went to mine. IIRC I had to work the next morning. My parents always taught me to be responsible. Same for most of my friends. Prom was for the kids whose parents let them do nothing and paid them (allowance).

That said... if I had a kid, no way would I shell out so much cash for this stuff. You're practically an adult. Get a job, raise the money. I don't need to pay cash so you can get laid.

IMHO spending that much money for one night is a great chance to teach a lesson about the value of a dollar. I don't think any of these kids would go for this if they were paying themselves. Now that it's "free" (at least for them)... why not?

The year before I graduated they had the prom on a boat in Lake Ontario. The grads kicked the speakers overboard and generally trashed the boat. Next year, no prom.

Mine was at an officer's club on an air force base -- this was May 2002. About a month or two before the big night, the senior class was called into the auditorium for about an hour to discuss gate entry and "what not to do on a military base considering what happened last September" procedures. I had a dependent military/civilian ID through my father, so I kind of zoned out.

From what I've seen, proms have turned into practice runs for wedding receptions.

From the dresses and tuxes to the limos to the catered, $22k affairs - sounds like a wedding reception to me.

It's too bad that somehow kids have grown up to expect these expensive affairs. It's makes it hard for those who are struggling financially. Those student jobs aren't as available around here as they used to be so even really motivated kids from poorer families might not be able to afford their proms.

It reinforces even bigger and "better" weddings, although it seems a lot of engaged couples are starting to pull back on the big weddings. But for those who are still thinking big, I can't believe how much a wedding costs.

Prom used to be a stepping stone toward becoming an adult. It was often the first formal dance that kids attended.

That's all changed with kids having "formals" in junior high. It seems the whole process of introducing kids to formal events has been moved up.

I have no clue why.

I didn't see the attraction of prom when I was in high school. This was in part due to a rave in the larger city to the South of where I lived that occurred on the same night.

Even without the party, 14 years later, I still don't see the attraction of a high school prom. Pay big bucks to stand around in a suit while being chaperoned by a shop teacher and a guidance counselor? How did the tux rental companies sell that shiat to high school kids?
