What makes Biden so lampoonable is that he really pushes the Joe Average, everyman persona, and he's simultaneously exuberant in all of his public events. And given his intensity in public life, you imagine he's equally colourful and exuberant in private life, but you don't know how, exactly. We don't get a real sense of his interests, and his persona is so blandly constructed that it makes you wonder what the guy is like behind the scenes. That lack of a strong personal narrative, combined with his occasional malapropisms, are what make it easy for him to be painted as a buffoon, a drunk who tosses a 14-year old off a Dance Dance Revolution game or a seedy 70s-style playboy. Anything out of the ordinary, because Biden is never boring.

There's something enjoyable about the Onion articles because they seem to originate in affection for Joe Biden as a public figure and making him larger than life, even while lampooning his everyman persona. They're a nice change from satire about Dick Cheney, which drew on his paranoia and enthusiasm for torture.
