(The New York Times)   Shirtless Joe Biden is washing a Trans Am in the White House driveway. Of course, it's an Onion article, but the NYTimes feels compelled to front page it   (nytimes.com) divider line 63

Its an article giving some behind-the-scenes detail to the one of the Internet's most popular comedy sites. Seems reasonable to me.

Does "front page" mean something different now?

Political satire typically seizes on a public official's foibles or flaws and exaggerates them - Gerald R. Ford's clumsiness, Bill Clinton's fast-food cravings, George W. Bush's malapropisms, for example.

The article wasn't bad either.

Old news is old. I've been spoofing those Onion pics for years. It just became mainstream lamestream? I guess anything to get our minds off the trident missile launch off the LA coast. Maybe Obama can pose for playdogassed ugly magazine (what's with that big assed mole on the side of his nose anyway) to keep us pre-occupied and not thinking about possible Chinese intimidation of force right off our coastline.

For the remainder of the day, Biden occupied himself with hosing off his car, giving the side doors an extra coat of wax, and throwing out a variety of items from beneath its front seats, including crumpled-up fast food wrappers, a number of soft packs of Doral kings, an issue of Cheri magazine from 1991, and Senate bill S. 486.

The Onion rules.

I adore Biden as much as it is possible to adore a politician and still accept his faults. Despite his foot-in-mouth syndrome he's a hell of a lot smarter than most here give him credit for. His voting record I mostly agree with Link (new window). Plus, he laughs at The Onion's treatment of him. He's a guy I'd like to have a beer with, yet trust to know a bit more about, say, foreign policy, than I ever will. He was my choice in the primaries, based on his "Plan for Iraq" which made a hell of a lot of sense, and I was quite happy when he was chosen for VP.

Don't discourage the Times. Newspapers desperately need to embrace the internet, and more power to the Times for trying. Even though they look like total newfags.

I love the Biden parodies.

What makes Biden so lampoonable is that he really pushes the Joe Average, everyman persona, and he's simultaneously exuberant in all of his public events. And given his intensity in public life, you imagine he's equally colourful and exuberant in private life, but you don't know how, exactly. We don't get a real sense of his interests, and his persona is so blandly constructed that it makes you wonder what the guy is like behind the scenes. That lack of a strong personal narrative, combined with his occasional malapropisms, are what make it easy for him to be painted as a buffoon, a drunk who tosses a 14-year old off a Dance Dance Revolution game or a seedy 70s-style playboy. Anything out of the ordinary, because Biden is never boring.

There's something enjoyable about the Onion articles because they seem to originate in affection for Joe Biden as a public figure and making him larger than life, even while lampooning his everyman persona. They're a nice change from satire about Dick Cheney, which drew on his paranoia and enthusiasm for torture.

Astute appraisal, bobette. Really. Do you like Biden, and laugh because you like him, or dislike Biden, and laugh because you dislike him? I have tomorrow off, and I am working on a buzz. Let me get this straight: You want to interview the vice president about stories about him in The Onion?" Mr. Carney asked, sounding at once amused and dumbfounded by the request. "Well, I'll give you credit for trying."

I am impressed this administration treats The Onion with a grudging respect and not as an evil organism.

I am impressed that you came to that conclusion you really must spend a lot of time justifying your vote.

Some idiot calls the VP's office and the guy is amused and dumfounded that they would call. That is hardly "grudging respect". They were polite however and didn't just hang up on them.

How would have the Bush Administration handled the 'stupid question' if it was a running joke about Cheney? I am guessing hang up or not acknowledge the onion as existing.

I like Biden, I guess. I don't usually think of politicians in terms of how much I personally like them. But yeah, I like Biden.

By the way, if you think Biden's cute now, you should have seen him 30 years ago.

From the NYT article at the time...
¶The four drank out of beer mugs. Mr. Obama had a Bud Lite, Sergeant Crowley had Blue Moon, Professor Gates drank Sam Adams Light and Mr. Biden, who does not drink, had a Buckler nonalcoholic beer. (Mr. Biden put a lime slice in his beer. Sergeant Crowley, for his part, kept with Blue Moon tradition and had a slice of orange in his drink.)
