No.
When I begin I see one layer in my toolbox/layer view.
When I finish I have N+1 layers. I would like to merge them all down into one layer for the image, and hte solution has alluded me thus far (haven't had enough time to investigate thoroughly b/c work).

When I have numerous layers, I am able to save the image, and it appears as a unified layer when saved, so I am not missing any functionality per se. However, I would really like to be able to begin and end with one layer.
