SpeedBest: clearly this isn't the place to discuss a topic that is relevant to women! lol

Breast cancer awareness is about KEEPING the public aware that breast cancer is still a serious problem and not something that is a passing issue to be forgotten about. It's a cause that needs money, and even the sale of a single bracelet adds up. Why target teens? because breast cancer prevention is something that all women need to be aware of. If you start feeling your boobies when you're a teen, you'll probably catch that lump when you're still feeling them at 38.

Vulgarity is silly as a concept. What is so threatening about a word, it only has as much power as you give it.

this is true of so much in life. as billy shakespeare wrote (paraphrase): "only thinking makes it so".

I think the point of "spreading awareness" is bring enough attention to the disease so that women understand its severity and actually get in the habit of doing regular breast self examinations and after a certain age, getting regular mammograms, thereby increasing the chance of catching the cancer at an early enough stage to save their boobies (and lives). Let's face it, people are lazy and tend think themselves invincible. Being "aware" enough to actually take action (ie. getting hit over the head with the message over and over again until you finally farking get it), in this case, could save lives.

But you know, whatever.

Wardish: 1. Awareness. To all those who think increasing awareness is useless. By your logic the advertising industry should shut down 90 percent of it's operations

Ya, pretty much. If not more.

So breast cancer is a brand now?

BuckTurgidson: Rashnu: I don't really get the whole "awareness" thing. Don't most people already know that such a thing as breast cancer exists?

It's like prayer: how to do nothing and still feel like you're helping.

By "awareness" they mean "money". The marathons and stuff are the same idea as a fundraiser dinner, except you sound less fat for doing them.

Given that our capacity for abstract thought, one of the big things that distinguishes humans from the rest of the animal kingdom, is tied directly to language development, and because of things like speakers of languages that have more words for colors actually being able to physically distinguish more shades, I'm going to venture that words are quite powerful at times.

Counter this kind of stuff with actual logical arguments, please. Because your grounds for being arbitrarily dismissive is factually incorrect.

//I'd go with "making the words for secondary sexual characteristics forbidden serves no useful purpose and only combines sexuality with the desire to uncover the secret/forbidden." Or something like that.

Boobies

2010-11-06 09:41:45 PM
Back in college a sorority was selling pink paper ribbons that they stuck all over the wall behind them to "raise awareness" for breast cancer. Even after I bought one, they couldn't tell me what "raising awareness" meant.

I later made that incident into a student short film, "Raising Awareness for the Children" (new window)

I believe that the ACLU frequently does good things and fights the good fight, but damn they annoy me when they start fighting for childrens' "first amendment rights." They're minors...they don't effing have first amendment rights.

Aw come on, it's just a nickname. It's like supporting gay rights with a "I ♥ fudgepackers" bracelet. Get over it.
