I got a phone call from a telemarketer trying to raise funds for breast cancer research a few weeks back. She started laughing maniacally when I referred to the cause as the campaign to save the boobies, and couldn't make it through the rest of her call script.

I think this cause would've been supported by Benjamin Franklin, the Boobiesmaster General of the United States.

I don't really get the whole "awareness" thing. Don't most people already know that such a thing as breast cancer exists?

You're not the only one who snerks at 'awareness' drives. like the facebook "I like it on the table" and the bra color ones? how did that help anything? how did it raise funds? tell me how that changed the life of someone with breast cancer other than making a bunch of people falsely feel like they contributed to a solution and I'mma eat my hat.

The main purpose is to get them to buy various consumer junk products by coloring them pink.

While the products are mostly useless, these sales do raise money so I can't really fault them.

One of the most common treatment options actually removing the breast. Just seems like it would be annoying having some twat talk about saving boobies when in fact to save your life you had to get rid of a tit. Not to mention it usually occurs in older women past child birthing age.

//just seems like an odd thing to sexualize.

Well, glad to be doing my part by being aware then I guess.

UsikFark: Sure, you can know about it, but did you know you can donate to the cause?

Donating to the cause of spreading more awareness still strikes me as somewhat futile.

Some women I know got very pissed off for that very reason - it was useless, didn't inspire donations, and an "awareness campaign" that tries to try and keep half the population in the dark about the campaign seems like a recipe for fail from the word go. As does using facebook to try and do anything.

Me, I just wondered what possible point it had, because if anyone doesn't know that breast cancer is a thing by now then they must have been living under a farking big rock.

Also laughed at people a lot during the underwear one because I had it figured out as soon as someone I knew posted the colour of the underwear I had had the pleasure of removing from her a few weeks before. I thought about tits a whole lot that week, and probably not in the way that the 'ladies' posting the details of their undergarments were hoping for.

I, too, am confused at the whole "breast cancer awareness". These measures don't convey anything but "breast cancer- it exists". What are we supposed to learn? What are we encouraged to DO? Are you promoting that more people should GET breast cancer? What?? It's not asking for money, it's not about early detection- which is not esp relevant for the male half of your audience. In fact, medical research has argued against more earlier detection being useful, in that it detects only benign lumps or makes no significant difference in the survivability of a malignant one.

Pink Glove Dance I'm not saying it's not cute. I don't hate it. I'm just confused of the specific message- is breast cancer awesome and danceable? WTF DOES IT MEAN???

So let me see ... you're worried that kids will notice these bracelets, but because of the word 'boobies' you will have lost the moment you could have used to make them aware of breast cancer? Okay then, take off the word boobies. Now you don't have their attention at all. Derp!

2010-11-06 03:37:58 PM
clearly this isn't the place to discuss a topic that is relevant to women! lol

Breast cancer awareness is about KEEPING the public aware that breast cancer is still a serious problem and not something that is a passing issue to be forgotten about. It's a cause that needs money, and even the sale of a single bracelet adds up. Why target teens? because breast cancer prevention is something that all women need to be aware of. If you start feeling your boobies when you're a teen, you'll probably catch that lump when you're still feeling them at 38.

Vulgarity is silly as a concept. What is so threatening about a word, it only has as much power as you give it.

Two Items.

1. Awareness. To all those who think increasing awareness is useless. By your logic the advertising industry should shut down 90 percent of it's operations. After all everyone who wants to be is aware of the products they want. INSTEAD there are folks who decide they need something, or something in their life changes and having boobie brought to the front of their attention will prompt action THIS TIME.

2. Vulgarity. PLEASE! Vulgarity only exists in the mind of the observer. Boobies are even more foolish to describe as such. An item our infants feed from, that is legal to display in most states, especially having to do with breastfeeding.

There are cultures here in the US that find dancing to be vulgar, case in point a previous Attorney General Ashcroft. Other cultures find using a knife at the meal to be vulgar, after all anyone knows that all food served should be already in bite size chunks.

Vulgar is in YOUR MIND. Quit infecting others with your fear of our natural selves.
